I'm also playing a Vanquisher. Dual-wielding gunslinger to be exact.

I can give you a couple of quick tips to make your life easier and more fun. (Actually, I got some very helpfull tips from this video www.youtube.com/user/sinosleep007#p/u/6/QVAqnk5XZ7U, so thumbs up to Sinosleep)

- Go 3:2 DEX-DEFENSE with attribute points (every level)
- First, invest your skill points into Ranged Weapon Expertise, then go for Dual Wielding (Arbiter tree). These two passive abilities actually stack, when you are using dual pistols, so it's a very worthy investment, if you are going the dual gunslinger route.
- At lvl.15 start invseting into Explosive Shot and
leave Riccohet, Frost Plum and Seeking shot alone, because they are more or less inferior. In the meanwhile you can invest some points into Armor Expertise, if you are feeling to squishy (you can also leave this one for later levels) and Critical Strikes for some nasty critical damage.
- After that, you can invest into whatever you like. I opted for Treasure Hunter, because more gold and l00tz is always awsome. Arrow Hail is a nice AoE spell, but I find it mostly redundant because of Explosive Shot. Also, traps from the Arbiter tree are also great, and they work nicely with ranged weapons.
- Get some offensive spells like Summon Flaming Sword, and personally I like to run with two buff spells like Devirish (increased attack speed for a short time) and Elemental Overload (increased elemental damage for a short time).
- Get your pet a summon spell like Summon Skeletons/Skeleton Archers and a healing spell also helps, especially at lower levels. Also, feeding him fish to transorm helps a lot with his damage output, elemental damage, survivability, etc...
- I recommend playing on Hard (minus the Hardcore mode) for the first time, since the challenge is just about right imo. It's not a complete cakewalk, but also not frustratingly difficult. Well, you could say it's fun.

And that's about it, as far as the most notable ranged abilities and some of my personal preferences go. I hope it helps and I wish you luck on your dungeon raiding adventures. :)

Thanks! Heh, okay tbh I'm actually not that bad at this game. I'm finding it pretty easy on very hard using the ranged crit-build I came up with.

I've avoided dual-wielding for the early-game because I actually haven't noticed any attack-speed differences between single weapon and dual and it's hard to be lucky enough to get two awesome pistols. As it is, I can equip bows, rifles, or pistols- basically the highest dps ranged weapon I find. On a related note, pistol and shield setups are actually pretty fun(ny looking). haha

As per usual, I'm use a pure-damage glass cannon route (i mean survivability, pfft!):
- All into dex (or just enough def to equip a rare chest piece)
- One level of Needle Arc (not necessary, but it can be useful when kiting large mobs)
- Ranged Weapon Expertise (upgrade when free points available)
- Critical Strikes (upgrade as much as possible as early as possible)

I got as far as a maxed critical strikes on my normal playthrough and was easily one-shotting most enemies (hence the 'boring'). Currently on very hard it takes 2-3 shots but even still it's pretty easy unless I do something stupid. I'm getting more used to aiming with a mouse (and hitting shift everytime I take a shot) so I do less of the 'running straight at enemies instead of attacking them' which is nice.

Ricochet is actually pretty awesome when dealing with mobs (if you set it up right you can get 2-3 hits on groups of enemies). Not sure if it's worth upgrading it though;

That advice about the spells for the pet sounds pretty good though. Wasn't sure what to give it; A summon spell makes sense and I suppose a healing spell could be useful. I've named mine rabbit, which is fitting given how much of the time it spends fleeing. hahaha

Well thanks again, it's a pity there's no online/multiplayer play. :)

Torchlight was pretty cool although the camera sucked and I had to fix up a lot of the armor textures. Destroyer class was the strongest class followed by vanquisher. The game was pretty much about picking one weapon with a decent damage base and upgrading it over and over again until it had godly stats. I got pretty far in but never completed it. It got pretty repetitive. I never played it on a difficulty less than hardcore and permanent deaths. The multi-player version will be torchlight II. I think it is going to be torchlight 1 + multi. Not really worth getting IMO.

@mr_afk: No problem, I'm glad I could help. :) Also, you need to get explosive shot. It does make dealing with mobs even more of a faceroll, but they usually don't present any real challenge anyway. So you can either grind them down with basic attacks or whatever, or blow them to pieces all at once with explosive shot(s). It's very useful, makes a lot of encounters less tedious IMO.

@Jack-Nader - yeah, the camera is pretty weird at times and I don't know how to fix armour textures :(
I did manage to mod female (i.e. vanquisher) gender choices into the other classes so finally get into the other classes without wincing every few seconds.

I think I might try out that idea. I'm not too sure what would be considered a 'decent base' though as they seem to be always increasing.

Yeah, I don't know about torchlight 2. Unless they add more classes/build options and make the combat a little less repetitive I probs won't get it (until it's really cheap). I don't think i'l play on hardcore...It's tempting to add that extra challenge but it also means that if I mess up (especially with my glass cannon builds) I can end up losing hours of grinding which I don't want to do again. haha

@Relix28 - Yeah I was planning on getting explosive shot but never got up to that level.

heh, it's funny how this has derailed into a torchlight discussion, but anyhow I've actually stopped my vanquisher playthrough and am now doing an alchemist playthrough. I also tried out the destroyer class along the way (as to figure out some ideas).

Basically as you probably know, I like doing more experimental/unique builds and using a ranged vanquisher is probs as generic as it gets haha. I'm doing a glass-cannon melee alchemist on very hard- it's probably the most powerful build I've ever used. Currently I one-shot almost any enemy (and kill bosses really fast) but have really low health and armour (so skeleton archers are horrible).

It might be something to do with the staff I'm using but so far it's been the most entertaining of my play throughs because the fights are require a degree of skill. The combo of Frost (freeze enemies) and running in to shatter them is really reliable. It slows their attack and movement speed so you don't get hit and I seem to shatter them every hit (and I've got a staff with 'fastest attack speed'). I'm going to try get more AoE abilities though, because killing mobs enemy by enemy is pretty slow going.

Speaking of which, back to the game! :)

For destroyer you want a two handed weapon with as much speed as possible added to it. The reason is simply weapon range. Pick any two-hander with a very high damage base before you start upgrading it. ~ 300 damage base is a good place to start. Then its a matter of picking the right talents and collecting the best armor. After that you go around owning face.

heh, that's sort of what I'm going to use as my base staff. It's only got 171 dps (character at level 13) but has the fastest attackspeed + a very useful 4%faster and 34 health stolen on hit. I don't even need to use health potions with this.

I'm hoping I can enchant some more properties into it (in preference to my 193dps staff) simply because the faster attackspeed and it's vampiric properties are amazing.

Hmm.. tbh, it's already starting to get old. Why can't there be more games with decent fight mechanics like DA2? :(

Maybe because lots of people complain about those fight mechanics?

Just out of my mind

"DA2 fight mechanics are boring and dumbed down, you have to wear down wave after wave of enemies with auto-attacks, and then hit on the epic heatlh bar of an commander for over 10 minutes"

"Because of the wave system DA2 has lost all strategic value, the enemies just pop up behind my mage and kills him before I can act"

"Casual difficulty is to easy, it's not fun playing such an easy game"

EDIT: and my favourite one "Dragon Age 2 is a FP Shooter."

Haha yeahh I guess. For all those people playing on Normal/Hard I suppose the DA2 combat lends itself towards the impression that it's simplified- as all you need to do is auto-attack.

But it's not reasonable for them to think that it's 'dumbed down' when lots of mechanics are actually working like they should and have much greater depth to them. I tried kicking up another Origins run and realised just how much of the optimising involved avoiding bugs- like attack speed for example. Getting archers to work with haste running is pretty much impossible. Threat management etc also had major issues if I remember correctly.

So for me anyway, after playing DA2 the combat in Origins actually feels unsatisfying (and I can't bring myself to play it). It completely removes the element of technical skill (e.g. dodging/positioning/moving from enemy to enemy to manage threat) and feels so....clunky.

But yeah, in general they make me ""

I may consider soloing the ARW if I get bored. :)

I seem to be talking to myself. Anyway, I just did the qunari invasion challenge and the arishok duel.
He probably shouldn't have challenged a duelist to a duel.
10second Arishok Duel

Poor Arishok. The patch hit him hard.
But I think a shadow/duelist is probably the best build possible for this fight. I can go into the details if anyone is interested. I'll also get around to uploading the qunari invasion but I'm getting packed for holidays so probs won't upload it anytime soon.

p.s. I had the perfect music (iron by woodkid) but it got muted. Oh well, just go watch the assassin's creed trailer- it's amazing :)

hahaha fair enough, I do that myself every now and then.:innocent:

Well, anyway this is notice to all those creepy voyeurs that I'm going to be away on holidays so probably won't update this too much for the next few weeks :)

Well, creepy 'character build' voyeur here. I play on normal, but the fighting the Arishok with this build convinced me to bump up the difficulty. The fight was over in no time. I don't even think the Arishok had enough time to destroy my decoy.

I was hesitant to try out Shadow until reading your build. Thanks for the help and motivation.

well, nice that you give the Arishok, Xebbie, High Dragon, Deep Roads Dragon and all the others a time-out. They were suffering already under the the burn out syndrom, your medicine studies probably helped you to realise the threat, imagine DA2 without those bosses. *shudders*

Nice holidays for you then.

As for the voyeurs (like me), they are probably just to afraid of you to post, viewing the cruel things that you do to those defenseless poor little creatures. ;)

happy to hear that it helped!

And yeah, probably should give all those innocent little dragons a break- they're already on the verge of extinction! And where would we be without demons doing...demony things? haha

Anyway, when I get back I've got some happy surprises for them planned (did anyone say spirit/nature builds?). :)

mr_afk, does Obscure effect also cause enemy archers to miss 50% of the time?

Hmm i'll have to check. I don't think i've ever seen an archer ever miss - something to do with a ridiculously high attack-rating or something (I'm pretty sure their basic attacks count as abilities..). I know that people have tested builds with ~70% defence (from cunning) and never got glancing blows so I'm not sure that obscure will help that much.

This makes archers quite a pain and one of my first targets (so they never get the chance to hit or miss me).

I'm thinking that high cunning (max defence ~70%(?)), parry+throw the gauntlet (+40%), evasive maneuvers (+20%), and obscure (+50%) should be able to test whether it's even possible for them to glance- but I don't have access to my xbox atm so i guess it's up to someone else to test it out.
If cunning stacks like attack does, you should be able to get way over 100% defence and thus get glancing blows from almost everything.

But in regards to your initial question I would say probably not. :/

Quick question about Throw the Gauntlet. If you activate it on an enemy and then drop threat with Stealth or Decoy, will the status effect still be on the enemy? That way the enemy will have decreased effects, and you don't have a fly on your ass.

hmm i would assume so.
i haven't found much use for it besides the arishok so haven't really tested it out much. Maybe it could also help against the ARW, but in general, besides some of the bosses there's next to no point increasing your attack/defence and reducing their damage

i'm not completely sure about the deal with To the Death and whether it changes anything;

Anyway, i'll test it out when I get back :)

semi-update for my act 3 builds. Using elemental builds makes things a lot easier.
I'll update this with the relevant videos I record but will only go into detail about my elemental builds if someone wants it.

I'm currently attempting to solo Malvernis (from the Legacy dlc) so hopefully we'll have the full version up soon. :)

Thank you so much for this build. Even though I don't go solo, it's been a great help. If this were ME2, I would say that at last I am a biotic god! I love being able to fly across the battlefield to stick it to some freaking templar hunter or asssassin!

haha glad you like it!
and yeah, the vendetta CCC paired with lacerate is amazing- it's the only thing I miss about playing in a party. That and dual haste.

Here's a quick party setup I did to do Malvernis:
It's the first time i've ever used a tank- and I must say that Aveline does do a good job at soaking up all the damage. If you're interested I can run through my build but it sounds like you've got things sorted :)

I am interested in your build if you don't mind posting.  I love the fact that I can take this character out with anyone in the party and stand a great chance of not only surviving but kicking bottom and taking names. I like to do a "girls night out" with me, and the rest of the ladies taking on the town and showing them who owns it.

BTW,  Torchlight is the reason I bought Dragon Age in the first place.  I started with Fate and it's children and then got Torchlight.  I kept thinking, "This would be even better if it had more story to it."  That got me searching reviews for medieval role playing games with "more story."  The rest is history.  I still have Torchlight on PC, but I should get it for my console just for fun.  I love the "armor" you get to wear as the dual wielder.
