Please keep in mind that I have only played ME2.  I have played through it twice and I have a few careers going.  I still haven't played Mass Effect 1, and I'm not sure that I would enjoy the gameplay.  I hear that you can't curve biotic attacks, and of course the graphics aren't up to par anymore.  Will there be anything in ME1 that isn't in ME2? Will my allies be even more suicidal and still try to eat mid-air bullets?  The genesis DLC kinda summed it up for me, but do you think I would actually enjoy the gameplay or will it feel like I am being gimped?

Why would you skip ME1? So you went in to ME2 knowing nothing of the story?

That is kind of backwards.

I didn't play ME1 years ago when it came out, and I typically don't play graphically sub-par games because I love the shiny stuff. I knew a little of the story but ME2 does a pretty good job of not requiring me to know the whole story. Will I still enjoy the combat in ME1 compared to the combat in ME2?

I don't know if you would like it or not. How about you just play it. I prefer the ME1 game play personally.

Maybe? Powers cool down individually, and Lift and Singularity rearrange the room in a way ME2 powers can only dream of. Also -extreme mountaineering aside- the Mako sections are much more fun than the hammerhead.

The each example of a type of gun handles in exactly the same way with minor changes in performance but you can also add mods for more individuality. I prefer the lack of clips, as well as the fact that no where in the game will you encounter an unlimited number of enemys.

You may enjoy it more then you enjoyed ME2,(I do/did) I say give it a try. Plus the graphics are not horrible by any means. I would compare them to any game out there.(If not better.) They still use the unreal engine in ME1.
The Mako thing depends on your gameplay. There are routes cut out for the Mako in ME1,but they are not as obvious as most needed.
The comic does "sum" it up,but barley scratches the surface of ME1. I may be bias as ME1 is my Fav game of all-time. But I say it is for very good reasons. Wrex,Ash,Kaiden,Liara,Udina,& Anderson are not cameos in ME1,but actually developed characters that are very interesting and add more detail to your ME2 experience. Yes play ME1. You will deff enjoy it. I have yet to meet anyone who did not enjoy ME1.

If you dislike:
-Individual power cooldown
-Inventory management
-Frustrating terrain navigation
Then do not play ME1.

If you like:
-Many morality choices
-Immersive environments and missions
-Being godlike in combat by the end of the game
Then play ME1.

ME1 has pretty good graphics so i don´t understand your problems in that department. You may not like the gameplay (you don´t know until you try) but that is why the easy setting is for. Play ME1 on easy should be a breeze and you can focus on the story instead of the gameplay. But as i said, you won´t know if you like ME1 gameplay until you try it.

Dumb answer: Yes

True answer: Yes, until you reach level 40-45
Then you only play for the story, game becomes so easy that it makes you fall a sleep until you get to talk with someone and/or move on with plot.

This question keeps pooping up but no one can really answer that for you. IMO the gameplay was not really very good but at the time I still enjoyed the game. Going back to it after ME2 was painful though. If you do get it, just go in with realistic expectations.

Hey, that's what I did. Not a fan of space-operas, but the trailer for ME2 was pretty amazing and everyone was praising it, so I gave it a try.

Playing ME1 is a good idea. All the times I fangirled over finally seeing how everything started, all the little things which started making sense after I progressed through ME1... It was fun. I still prefer ME2 to ME1, but the first game had its good points as well.

I mean to buy ME1 when I download ME2 (already have the code, just need to upgrade the cpu before the code expires)... Just to have a point of comparison with the PS3 comic.

You'd enjoy it... but it won't be quite as good as it was when it first released (ME2 did almost everything better).

But I do miss the invincibility of my Vanguard in the first game...

ME1 differs from ME2 in ways like scenery and combat. While it's much more expansive and allows for more leisurely exploration, it can also be a little tedious as some planets are barren. The combat requires some finicky micro-management but it's a lot of fun once you've got a favorite style pinned.
ME1 is also worth playing if only to see mercs get slammed onto their backside with sledgehammer rounds. Oh, and husks. They're a riot with a singularity, heehee.

ME1 was a better overall crafted story and experience than ME2. ME2 had some better gameplay and overall better graphics, but literally every other element was better in ME1. Characters, story telling, missions, exploration, morality choices, the armor and weapon customization, even the scale of the conflict is better in ME1. I have more fun playing ME1 personally than I do playing ME2.

Yes.
- On veteran or below.
- Ignoring the collection quests.
- In general, doing assignments as you receive them in your journal.

In my opinion, it's got better narrative, more coherent story, absolutely solid atmosphere, down to a camera grain (or however you call it in english :P), and a little more respect for common sense, with your whole squad using proper armor during combat for one thing. However, ME2 probably did a little better with balancing the laughs and the serious bits (even if it did go a bit cheesy at times), and the game mechanics - lack of customisation and readable stats on weapons aside - are improved in just about every department. My perfect game would be ME1 narrative and atmosphere with ME2 mechanics. You have to decide for yourself if brilliant story and rock solid cast of characters are worth some annoyances with UI and reversed difficulty curve. I'd say Wrex alone makes up for all the issues with the game!

I was in the same boat as you last year I'm someone who saw ME2 in a rental place I played for a while then bought my own copy because it was amazing. Then I decided to play ME1 and from my experience ME1 wasn't as good as ME2 was. The traveling in the Mako is horrible and there are battles that end up feeling like chores and the characters that you're with are less deep than the ones in ME2. However it is worth playing at least once so you can transfer over a better save file for the future games.

too be honest I do not enjoy ME1 after playing ME2 but I find it useful for getting so much more backstory to ME2 and ME3 but I would say just play it to enjoy ME2 and ME3 more so
