On topic, ME1 to ME2 is like The Godfather to The Godfather Part II. Or A New Hope to The Empire Strikes Back. Or The Fellowship of the Ring to The Two Towers. Get the idea?

Please keep in mind that I have only played ME2.  I have played through it twice and I have a few careers going.  I still haven't played Mass Effect 1, and I'm not sure that I would enjoy the gameplay.  I hear that you can't curve biotic attacks, and of course the graphics aren't up to par anymore.  Will there be anything in ME1 that isn't in ME2? Will my allies be even more suicidal and still try to eat mid-air bullets?  The genesis DLC kinda summed it up for me, but do you think I would actually enjoy the gameplay or will it feel like I am being gimped?

Well ME1 does play differently from ME2, so don't expect it to handle the same.

The game is a bit clunky at times (FPS can slow down, some Texture Popping), but IMO it's a far more in-depth/strategic game. You really have to use your powers wisely and make use of the environment. In ME2 you can basically hide behind any cover and remain safe as long as you aren't flanked.

Also it's a bit erroneous to say ME2 is completely better looking then ME1. The lighting is better in ME2 for example, but on the other hand ME1 has much more fluid character movement and more detailed physics. (Biotics will actually throw stuff around in the environment.)

ME1 is not a cover shooter like ME2. You can still take cover in ME1 by pressing against surfaces, and you most likely want will to at in times in ME1, but there's a much greater emphasis on being mobile and using cover as actual "cover". The game's combat starts off somewhat difficult, but gets more manageable as you become incresingly powerful which to me is why it's a bit more fun. You start off a bit weak, but by the end of the game you're facing literally dozens of enemies at a time. ME1 has many pros and cons in that it's not as much of a traditional shooter as say ME2. You also do a fair bit of driving the Mako which is essentially a Mars Rover Tank. Also ME1 has a lot of side missions, so doing them all may be a bit tedious.

Even with it's flaws I highly recommend you play it at least once. Genesis is not a good summary for ME1 at all if you ask me, it's better then nothing, but you are missing a lot by not playing ME1. I'd say give ME1 a chance as if nothing else the ending is certainly worth experiencing yourself at least once.

Edit: As for squadmates in ME1. I wouldn't say their A.I. is any better or worse, but they will follow you much better. So if you can keep yourself alive, so will they. You can also both Heal and Revive Squadmates. If a Squadmate is getting shot up you can usually activate one of their defensive powers or Heal them to keep em' alive.

Playing Mass Effect 2 before Mass Effect 1 and without the Genesis comic sort of destroys the entire series. Mass Effect is not about shooting an enemy out of cover or curving a biotic attack, those are just part of the journey along the way.  The story decisions you make in Mass Effect 1 radically change the story of Mass Effect 2, and it's worthwhile to see what can happen to different characters in the place of Commander Shepard.  If you like any Mass Effect, you have to like Mass Effect 1.  You might dislike the repetitive and flawed parts of the gameplay of ME1, but the gameplay isn't even half of the value.

EDIT: So you did play the Genesis comic. That's good. You had me scared for a second there. I still think that a comic can't fill in for an entire game.  You'll definitely enjoy seeing the events of the comic in a full fledged game, whether the gameplay is perfect or not.  Some elements of the gameplay were actually better in ME1 IMO, like the physics.  Things like the Mako and the item collection are also fun, they just got too repetitive after a while.

By using only Genesis, you only got the info on about 20% of the game. Genesis doesn't even mention Feros which was a main mission. Which bugs me. I would say yes, play through ME1. Unless you are on PS3 then you are SOL in that department.

By not playing ME1, you missed out on several small missions in ME2 and one of the store discounts on Illium.

Even though the game play is much improved in ME2, that doesn't mean the game play in ME1 is bad. Just different.

Worse comes to worse rent it.

I'm more of a COD guy but I enjoyed ME1. ME2 was way better for my style of game play. However, after I went back and did another playthrough of ME1 I enjoyed it a lot more than the 1st time. The RPG elements are better and there's more exploration. I don't enjoy the vehicle travel all the time on the planets but the interaction with other characters on the citadel and other cities is great.

It's like taking a Reese's Cup, leaving the peanutbutter and just eating the chocolate. You don't get the full EFFECT, unless you experience them both.

IMHO, me2's combat is way better. Maybe a bit simpler but alot more seemless and streamlined.

The graphics aren't that bad allthough the "film grain" effect is overdone to the point of annoying in retrospect.

ME2 had, in my oppinion, too little "freeplay"/exploring the galaxy whereas ME1 had too much to the point of being too repetitive.

ME1 do have a huge advantage in weapon upgrades and customization. Maybe too much but way too little in ME2.

Just my oppinions...

That depends. Are you a combat, graphics focused person or a story focused person? If you are the former, probably not. Texture popping and a general poor graphics optimization make ME1 the graphically inferior game. That isn't to say it doesn't have its charm; many like the art style and color palette of the first game better than the second but that is a strictly subjective perspective.

The combat also leaves a lot to be desired. If you play your fair share of shooters then ME1 will feel like something of an abortion of the genre. Between RPG-stat based performance, nearly identical weapons with only statistical differences, and cover that feels more than tacked on ME1's combat is pretty bad.

And that isn't even mentioning the vehicle with a huge learning curve that many people never truly mastered.

However, if you like a good story, then ME1 cannot be missed. Of the two games it has the easiest to understand story and what a story it is. Scattered like fine sand throughout the game are well developed and interesting characters. Truly you would be hard pressed to find a flat character in ME1. From the humorous stalker/fan Conrad Verner to the conniving Nassana to the brother and wife of the late Michael this game is filled with believable people.

So if you are willing to cope with the combat of ME1 in order to experience the story and characters because you care most about these things then yes, you need to play ME1.

If you prefer to take part in visceral, well balanced, and well controlled combat and experience the most cutting edge in graphics because those things are most important to you then I suggest you skip ME1 and just play ME2 to its fullest.

I was in the same situation as you!

my friend was playing ME2 so i played it at the same time as i thought it looked good. Enjoyed it thoroughly so thought id start ME1 as i didnt know about the decisions carrying over ect...

My immediate thought was "wow the combat is different" and didn't really like it at first but as i got about half way into it, i actually really liked it especially being able to buy different guns/armor ect.
I also thought the story was better for ME1

Played ME2 again after so i could prepare my story for ME3 and found myself weirdly disappointed at first. But because both games are so long you get back in the habit and fall in love again lol!

Id do it just so you can play ME2 again!

Play ME1 if you care about continuaty and story else just stay with ME2.
If you play as an adept or any other class heavily based on biotics ME1 can be very fun specially because all abilitys are on individual cooldown.

The combat is better in ME2 while the story was more interesting in ME1. Of the two games, I prefer ME2. I like the better balance between RPG and shooter (and this is coming from a BG, BGII, and KOTOR veteran). And I really like being able to romance Garrus >.>.

Part of the fun of ME1, though, was discovering the real threat. You already know since you've played ME2, so I don't know if you'll find the story as engaging as I did. I'm pretty amazed how many people on these forums played ME2 first and then ME1. It's not a bad thing, but I think you missed out on some of the 'wow!' moments of ME1 as well as getting to know some of the characters before the events in ME2. Correct me if I'm wrong, too, please, but I don't think the Genesis comic lets you make every single decision you made in the ME1 game (is that right or isn't it?) Plus I, at least, find it far more enjoyable to follow a story chronologically (with the exception of Star Wars) rather than out of order.

Well, I'm one of those strange people that played ME2 first. After a few runs, I finally decided to make a "perfect import" and got ME1. First impression was...not very favorable.

After ME2 combat seemed horrible, countless sidequests in same 3 buildings merged into one single blob, Mako anti-gravity driving was just..ugh. You get the idea.

Now, don't flame me yet, ME1 fans.

I was surprised: I knew the game was praised and loved, but my impression was very different. So I sucked it up and played again. And then again.

Now I'm absolutely in love with ME1. It is truly one of the best games I ever played, though it took me some time to realize it. The combat is still horrible, but the atmosphere and story are superb. Graphics are quite alright too, if that your worry. So you definitely should try it.

Another great thing about ME1 - those 3 building that every sidequest had made me immune to the recycled areas. That helped a lot in DA2 :)

It's worth playing through, but if you aren't a huge fan of the game don't feel compelled to do all the side missions. The assignments add next to nothing besides more shooting things in identical prefab buildings filled with crates.

Biggest reason to play through is that taking your own Shep from ME1 to ME2 personalizes it a lot more. And likely even more so with ME3 on the way.

rofl. It's an exercise in using your imagination. After I thought about being little and imagining my bedroom as a lava pit with stepping stones, an airplane, a hotel, a campsite, a club, and Paradise Estate from the My Little Pony movie, I figured I could handle the recycled environments . Anders, Fenris, and Isabela may have helped . But that's got nothing to do with ME1, pardon me.

ME1 is much more tilted to the RPG end than ME2 is. I went for completionist because that's just how I play, but if you don't like bouncing around in yourr very own bouyant tank, side missions might not be as fun. Side mission buildings are prefabbed clones, but I always consoled myself with the logic that prefab complexes on newly colonized worlds would most lokely be joined identical sections that can be quickly installed and added on to anyway. Weapon upgrading does allow for some fun tricks, like a high level sniper rifle using Hi Explosives Rounds X to pretend I've got a rocket launcher, or a shotgun with those rounds fr that matter... unless you prefer an endless stream of non-explosive bullets instead. It's worth playing for the story and to choose some things that will add to your ME2 experience. The shooting itself can feel a bit off, and it takes a while before power cooldowns reach a good recharge time, but once you're there it can be quite entertaining.

For me the "RPG Elements" of ME1 and ME2 are the same, just in different ways. As a table-top gamer for most my life I've been saddened by fact that a video game RPG needs micro-managment of inventory to be considered an "RPG."

Role-Playing games are about playing a role and having control of how your character reacts to any situation. Mass Effect 1 & 2 are both good Role-Playing games, and neither because of their inventory system, their exploration level or any other aspect. It's because you can decide what your character does (in ME2 you can even interrupt some cut-scenes) you can decide the order our your missions, how you respond to the situations, and who you can treat well and who you can treat like crap.

Now saying that. I played ME1 through 4 times before ME2 came out. And going back to ME1 after playing ME2... it's hard. They play so differently that it can be a hard transition. My opinion is try out ME1, Genesis doesn't do the story justice and only gives the bare bones. If you can't handle the overly cRPG elements, like having guns be only as accurate as your skill on your character sheet is, go to very easy and play it for the story.

The story of ME1 rocks. And it still has a better credits song than ME2 does. Even though Mass Effect was always supposed to be a trilogy, ME1 made sure to close on a "if we never see a ME2 we're happy," moment. ME2 ended knowing ME3 was coming, and it's story and ending suffers for that.

I played ME2 first and liked it so much I bought ME1. At first I found the controls and combat comparatively annoying and clunky, but I eventually got used to them. The story was good and I enjoyed seeing how everything started. Driving the Mako badly was also ridiculously entertaining. (I wanted Benny Hill music to play in the background while I drove the flaming Mako in circles trying to kill a ****ing Thresher Maw.)

The real payoff for me, though, was playing ME2 the second time with an imported Shepard. Suddenly ME2 became so much richer because I now had NPCs I knew updating me on what happened to the people and places Shep affected in the first game. Playing ME2 the first time was fun, but I didn't really GET why I was supposed to hate Cerberus or why Shep was so happy to see Garrus. After playing ME1 I felt everything more deeply -- now I HATE Cerberus and feel OVERJOYED to find Garrus. The whole galaxy makes so much more sense the second time around.

ME1 is like $11 and is definitely worth playing. Don't let the clunky controls deter you.

 Yes

No

But at least its easy to predict with a 67% accuracy that you would not like Mass Effect Galaxy

Because its like 15 minutes long, and has no other problems.  Nope, none at all.

You will, but if you don't like the inventory system, you can always use cheats, unlike in ME2: http://masseffect.wi.../wiki/PC_Cheats

Example:
