I've been toying with this idea for some time, and since we're starting to know more about ME3, I thought to kick this off (also since there's an ME3 forum now). For the news, I'll be using events from ME1, ME2, expected events from ME (fanfic prequel news) and some self-created news which I am totally unsure of whether it even would take place in ME Universe, but whatever on that one

Council officials, following the accusation of the Batarian Hegemony that humans are responsible for blowing up the Bahak system and everything and everyone within (allegedly, including the Mass Relay within the system), are saying that under supervision of the Council the Alliance is already launching an investigation. Rumours are saying that the famous Commander Shephard, the hero of the Battle of the Citadel, blew it up on order of the human-supremalist group Cerberus. How and why aren't known from those rumours, although some mention the use of an giant space object that would have been flown into the Mass Relay, blowing it up and releasing a deadly shockwave that devastated the whole system.
Other rumours, which got dispensed quickly by investigators, are saying Commander Shephard was actually acting on Alliance intel that a group of massive Sentient machines would be invading the galaxy through the relay, naming it the 'Alpha Relay' with capabilities beyond the standard abilities of secondary relays.
One thing remains ensured, the Batarian Hegemony is out for vengeance. This was Arcturus Daily News of 11 June.
