If I misunderstood your question, I apologize.

I just thought maybe they did the same thing in DA II. I ended up back in my house after I killed Meredith, but it wouldn't let me go anywhere but the black emporium.

I think the post-campaign appearance in the estate is queued up in preparation for any DLCs yet to be released. Presumably, you'd be able to access and accept new quests from the desk at that point.

lol It's ok, you did misunderstand. What i meant was, in DAOs, if you completed the game on at least Normal mode, you could play through a second time with the same character, maintaining your current level, but enemies scaled so it was still challenging.
Reminds me of Icewind Dale. A heart of fury mode would be fun for the Dragon Age series but c'est la vie.

When you play DA2, these things are going to happen NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO:
1. One sibling dies in the prologue no matter what you do.
2. The other sibling is arrested by the templars or becomes one, or becomes a warder and goes away at the end of Act 1 no matter what you do.
3. Mother gets killed in Act 2 no matter what you do.
4. Anders destroys the chantry, again (sense a pattern here) no matter what you do.
5. The first enchanter of the circle goes blood mage on you whether you win the fights or not. If you choose the Templar side, Meridith ends up revealing herself to be an evil psycopath at the end, again, no matter what you do.
Basically DA2 is by far the weakest Bioware effort to date. It's as if they've decided that the player is now irrelevant in the story. It has no replay value whatsoever, and this isn't necessarily a bad thing because I have no desire to buy any expansion or DLC as there isn't anything they can do really to improve this game at this point, especially given the dumbed down character and class system compared to DA:O.
If this is the future of Bioware I feel confident that I will have no interest in DA3 or ME3, or TOR. If I want to watch a story I have no control over I'll watch a movie, not play a game.

From what I've seen, there is way to replay the game and have things go significantly different, unlike every other Bioware game I've ever played.

This isn't what the OP asked.

When you play DAO, these things are going to happen NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO:
0.a As a human noble, your whole family will die no matter what you do (except Fergus but he's as good as dead for the rest of the game)
0.b As a city elf, your wedding will go horribly wrong no matter what you do and your cousin will be raped. No matter what you do. If female, your betrothed is killed no matter what you do.
0.c As a dalish elf you and Tamlen are tainted and he disappears no matter what you do. Your clan moves out of Ferelden no matter what you do.
0.d As a dwarf noble, Bhelen betrays you and Trian no matter what you do. Trian dies and you are sentenced to death no matter what you do.
0.e As a mage, Jowan get caught no matter what you do yadda yadda.
1. Your character will become a Gray Warden no matter what you do, whether you want it or not.
2. Daveth and Jory will die, no matter what you do.
3. Loghain will betray Cailan, who will die as well as Duncan. No matter what you do.
4. Lothering is destroyed, no matter what you do.
5. Arl Eamon will be cured by the sacred ashes, no matter what you do.
6. You will have to slaughter the carta and go look for Branka in the deep roads no matter what you do and how little you care for dwarven politics, no matter how many more urgent things you have to do on the surface.
7. You will duel Loghain in the landsmeet, no matter what you do, win or lose the election.
8. There will be exactly one other grey warden in your party, no matter what you do. Can't have boh Alistair and Loghain. Can't have neither.
9. Denerim will burn, no matter what you do.
10. The archdemon will die and the blight will end no matter what you do. Morrigan will leave (and live) no matter what you do.
