in multiple tutorials i see steps similar to "now check in the item"
i never select to check ANYTHING in. is this bad?

well.. eventually... you will run into the save bug... which requires you check out and check in an item to fix... or resources wont save right... "checking in" is a remnant from development by bioware (or used if you have a large team to check resources into a database everyone shares) all you really need to do is: go to the palette > right click the resource (NOT THE FILE, A RESOURCE) and then select check in and out from the drop down menu. You really wont ever need to think about stuff like this unless you are working with a large group of people.

I think you'll find that even solo builders need to understand checking in and out.
High-level operations (such as Delete and the String Editor) only work on checked in resources.
Low-level attributes (such as Tag or Inventory) can only be changed when a resource is checked out (or on a local copy).
If you want version control (the ability to go back to an earlier version of a resource in case you screw it up), it's convenient to check resources in periodically. The Bioware devs mentioned that it's good for data base integrity, too.
