Wouldn't it be cool to see Tali or one of the other core squadmates betray Shepard to the Reapers during the final confrontation in a surprising plot twist?

I mean, the Reapers could have kidnapped Tali, indoctrinated her, and have Shepard & Co. "rescue" her, not knowing that she has been indoctrinated.

I can see a scene going like this:

Shepard: You are going down, Harbinger! *****s assault rifle*

Harbinger: I'm afraid that some of your compatriots are not as complicit with your desires that they may seem...

*Tali shoots Shepard in the arm, disarming him*

Shepard: Argh! Tali... why...?

Tali (in emotionless voice): The Reapers are our salvation. Do not resist.

Shepard: NOOOOO! What did you do to her???!!!

Harbinger: We cleared her mind.

It would be awesome if that happened. Imagine if we are forced to shoot Tali or Garrus or Liara dead because they have become puppets of the Reapers. It would be a very tough decision.

I'm not sure I equate horrendous things happening to characters I've grown genuinely attached to with "cool", myself.

No - that would be... not good. I'm for characters dying (which is essentially what Indoctrination is) in the last one but those deaths should be meaningful and live up to the characters. Just having them be brainwashed seems a bit shocking for the sake of being shocking.

However as far as a betrayal goes, I can see Cerberus blackmailing Miranda against her will to work against Shepard (and ultimately being okay/helping Shep when he resolves the situation).

People seem really obsessed about the idea of a companion betraying Shepard. Don't we have enough to worry about in ME3 as it is?

Although I wouldn't like to see this happen, this line is epic.

That is a good line, I agree.

One of the worse ideas I have heard of yet. Just my opinion.

The idea that the Reapers could/would steal a member of your crew off of your ship, instead of just simply taking Shepard. Is not well thought out? Or far-fetched.?
I mean how will this abduction/kidnapping happen?
I imagine something like ME2's mission where the Collectors abduct your crew, but your squadmates are with Shepard in this situation. What if I have 2 of the 3 squadmates mentioned in my crew at the time of abduction? Will it be the other one taken? How will indoctrinating one of Shepard's crew, then exposing that crew member help the Reapers? If it's to late to save your squadmate, you will simply have to kill the Reaper and your squadmate.
Luring you to a certain destination will still have you fighting the Reapers. The main plot of ME3.
IMO it would seem as an unneeded & pointless plot device.! Simply invite Shepard he/she will come.

I could see having to shoot/incapacitate/lose friendship of a squaddie because of a tough decision Shep makes, but the indoctrination scenario was already done with Arrival. I don't see a repeat happening. Intriguing idea, though.

Terrible idea. Mind control is a cheap tactic for unimaginative writers to make characters do whatever they want them to do, no matter how nonsensical and out of character it may be.

Also, I don't get this obsession with betrayal either. It's almost as weird as people who want Shepard to have kids with their LI, although that at least I can chalk up to young people, hormones, and the natural youthful preoccupation with reproduction.

Why would they ever do something like that to characters that you've grown attached to over the course of the trilogy? It was bad enough having to choose between Ashley and Kaiden. We shouldn't have to lose another good teammate.

Easy. They attempt to ambush and board the Normandy, but Shepard and a majority of the crew manage to fight off the Reapers. However, one crew member is dragged off. Then, the Reapers lure Shepard and his team to the kidnapped squaddie. Shepard "rescues" him/her, and the squadmate appears to behave normally... until the final confrontation.

Excuse the bad grammar, but here's a revised line:

I'm afraid that some of your compatriots are not as complicit with your desires as they may seem...

Yea- no.
But if it HAD to happen, it'd be funnier if it happened to VS.

Actually, if you think about it, the VS does have the highest chance of being indoctrinated. After all, we don't even know how he/she got away from the Collectors on Horizon.

This would make Harbinger 20% cooler.

But I still think it's a cheap way for writers to make a *le gasp* moment.

Not sure if this was mentioned... but during the conversation with Garrus, he does ask you: "What would you do if one of your own betrayed you Shepard."

I really felt it was foreshadowing.

===

However, I think it would be FAR more interesting if they had someone betray you in an effort to save their species. At least you can empathize with that.

I hate magical mind control... despise it. Leave it for two-bit characters like Anders and Saren. ((Oh, the "X" made me do it!))

I think the best candidate for an indoctrinated squadmate is the VS (infected during Horizon). Not sure that Bioware would do it though.

Indeed. Some people already feel like the VS has betrayed them after Horizon anyway.

Yes the VS makes sense. It would've happened during Horizon. (since that Lilith person who was close to them ended up getting captured).

No one else was really close enough to Reaper Tech long enough to get indoctrinated (no other squaddie anyway).
