I'm not sure I equate horrendous things happening to characters I've grown genuinely attached to with "cool", myself.

Me neither. No betrayals please.

I doubt Bioware's writing is going to nose dive quality-wise so far that they will need a betrayal plot to spike interest for the final game.

I might consider letting the squadmate die during the suicide mission if they end up just getting indoctrinated anyway, depending on the circumstances (and they accompanied me on it).

it'd have to be subtle having you pick up on little hints along the way, but i wouldnt really get mad at a betrayal. could be well done actually.

people would nerdrage pretty hard if it was their favorite though

I can see the effect/emotion/situation people are striving for with this, and I can also say that I believe it can be achieved without resorting to some irreversible effect like indoctrination.

Or they could retcon how indoctrination works.

Why does someone need to be indoctrinated to betray someone?

Look - I didn't want Cerberus to crush my platoon with a Thresher Maw and then kidnap Toombs and subject him to vile experiments - but they did. It's less relevant because I didn't get to pew pew with Toombs for a few missions? Sure - I'll agree that there's less connection with someone you're just being told was a friend... but I still think finding out the choice you made at the beginning (Sole Survivor) wasn't true because of some secret organization (Cerberus) did alter my perceptions (AKA: I despise Cerberus)

These characters should have their own interests - if Shepard acts counter to those interests, something like a betrayal should be completely viable.

I don't disagree that it should be based on decisions Shepard makes - we haven't been clued in at all that these characters would betray Shepard, especially since we DID stop everything we were doing and cater to their personal problems (gaining their loyalty). Betrayal would have to come from something new - brought on by the great duress that would naturally be felt during a war that might be the end of all sapient life.

I find it unlikely since everyone but Liara has probably spent less time exposed to potential indoctrination than Shepard, who seems to be fine and dandy in that regard.

This would make Harbinger 20% cooler.

But I still think it's a cheap way for writers to make a *le gasp* moment.

Also Id throw the gamee out in 10 seconds flat.

no way am i letting tali/garrus get indoctrinated. Although im FOR the VS getting indoctrinated, problem is, I already nuked Ashley onn Virmire so Im sort of conflicted if i want that enough to let kaidan get brainwashed.

 Nope.

1. A twist that I personally would see coming (now Anderson...that would be interesting)
2. You would ****** off ALOT of fans by indoctrinating well like characters(pretty much the three you mentioned) and LI's.

Okay, just so I'm actually adding something to the topic:

I think I would not like that at all. Not besides which, Liara is really the only feasible candidate for such a role because a betrayal like that would be integral to the plot and I think it's safe to say that neither Garrus or Tali will play such a part as they could both be dead.

Already happened. You have TIM betraying you, what more do you want?

EDIT: Oh, you mean this happening to a character that the MAJORITY of the fans like? Sure, it's only fair.

It would be good if it was a direct result of something I did, a consequence of my actions. If it was an inevitable event that I could do nothing to prevent/cause it would be a big middle finger in my face, followed by a shotgun blast.

Yeah betrayals dont really sound all that good, especially if its the companion you like. If people remember BG2, Yoshimos betrayal didnt sit all that well with folks, so I wouldnt experiment with it. Now betrayal from somebody else, like Udina (wouldnt be the first time, eh) may go well with the plot, I just dont see the way to implement, as indoctrination does sound pretty lame.
