Kaidan and Jacob both take a lot of punishment. Sure, they get a little love from some corners, but for the most part they're regarded as dull and uninteresting, whether fairly or not. Well, we know that we're getting James Vega in ME3, and he'll probably fill that same "lead male henchman" role yet again. Not that I don't have faith in Bioware, but lets just say I'm betting on their track record. I'm sure Vega will have his supporters, but I'll be very surprised if he doesn't turn out to be the least popular henchman in ME3.

The thing is, if they wanted to buck this trend, it would be pretty easy. Hell, it would be stupid easy. All they have to do is ask themselves one question. Who is the most popular lead male henchman in science fiction history? Everyone knows the answer. It's Han Solo.

That's all you have to do, Bioware. Put Han Solo in the game. SOLVED.

Now, obviously I don't literally mean Han Solo, but some character who shares similar qualities. He cracks wise, has a certain roguish charm He's a little rough on the outside, but his heart's in the right place and he always come through in the end. He's somebody who would trade jokes with Joker, stand back-to-back with Garrus, and (most importantly) annoy the ever-living s**t out of Miranda.

That's it, Bioware. You've made the most popular lead male henchman to grace a Bioware game yet. Hell, if you can get Nathan Fillion to do the voice, you could probably unfurl a couple extra money sacks right now. Sure, there will be people who call you lazy for making a character that so obviously preys upon the basest desires of legions of science fiction fans, but you won't have to hear them over the sounds of all the delighted screams of fanboys and girls.

Personally, I'm not too concerned about Vega. I liked Kaidan, saved him every time on Virmire, can't wait to have him back in ME3. Jacob was fine. My only real issue with him was that my femshep couldn't have a conversation with him without sounding like she was trying to get into his pants.

Naw... Garrus is Batman on steroids. :P

What we need is a devilish, charming male individual in the style of Bond or Solo.

So...Varric? Varric was the pretty much perfect example of that in DAII, and I certainly wouldn't mind another Varric.

Seriously, isn't that Garrus?

I can just see him saying "Shaken, not stirred"

Except Batman doesn't shoot people. And for those comic book fans out there who says he does, those comics in which he does, are for the most part, terrible.

He's the Punisher.  I will release Franken-Castle on anyone who disagrees.

Edit: Too slow.

Favourite Han Solo line:

Especially the way he says "and what an incredible smell you've discovered."

Joker's not bad. Garrus is awesome.

Zaeed was pretty awesome too. It's like BW gives the leads the least interesting (to me anyways) personalities.

You know what else Han Solo is?

Cooler then Luke Skywalker.

The reason BioWares male lead "henchmen" are always so poorly recieved is because BioWare has to make sure they do not outshine the player character.

I wouldn't say they get 'little love'. Some people love 'em, some people hate 'em, and some are just apathetic. I personally don't like Kaidan, but I really appreciate Jacob's character. I say the problem, as it were, is individual to the character, not some overarching concern.

That's a valid concern, but only if the writers fail to make Shepard awesome as well. There's room in a story for multiple cool characters. After ME1 and ME2, I should think that would be evident. Even in ME1 with its much smaller cast of characters, we have both Garrus and Wrex alongside Shepard. That ship was exploding with awesome, but Shepard was never outshined.

From person to person, yes, reactions will differ on these characters. But if you look at Bioware games, statistically speaking the lead male team member is almost invariably the least popular among the fanbase. Is this a bad thing? Not necessarily. I imagine Bioware finds it a tad irksome. I only wanted to point out the one sure-fire way I could think of to upset the trend.

The most well-received lead male henchman in a bioware game was Varric. He was a lovable wisecracking dwarf. In ME, the closest we have to dwarves are volus. Therefore, we need a lovable wisecracking volus.

Actually I'd say Varric and Alistair were the most well received and even then Varric may not count since he isn't romanceable. So I'd put him on the level of characters like Wrex. While not romanceable they are pretty damn awesome.

BioWare does not have a dismal track record with lead male henchmen. Recent history:

Kotor: Carth was kind of boring and annoying, I will give you that.
Jade Empire: Sagacious Zu was a funny guy, he gives good advice and doesn't afraid of anything
Dragon Age: Alistair was one of the most popular characters in the game
Mass Effect: Kaidan was an interesting character, a bit soft-spoken, sure
ME2: There wasn't anything outrageous about Jacob, he was just kind of there
ME1&2: Garrus. No more need be said.
Dragon Age 2: Varric? Great character. Carver doesn't count because he's a little **** who is dead is over half of all playthroughs.

Even being generous and giving you Carth, Kaidan, and Jacob, ends with a 4-3 record

Kaiden didn't impress me at first, but he's grown on me through multiple playthoughs.

Jacob...it started out well when my soldier shepard discovered somebody from the same job with the same mentality, but he just didn't go anywhere.

Buy yeah, I think they make some party members generic so the memorable ones stand out more. That's what happens, at any rate.

You literally just gave the description for Garrus.

Just bring back HK-47 for every game, even if it isn't Star Wars related.
