True. But as soon as a character dares to speak against the player most will instantly hate him or her "points at VS, Liara pre-LOTSB and Carver". Guess most can't stand having their ego get hurt.

Jack and Fenris get a lot of heat too. Basically "character who doesn't suck up to me" = "stupid and should die" for a lot of players, which makes no sense to me. I tend to be the opposite, I find the characters who are consistently agreeable (Bethany, Kaidan, Kelly, Dawn Star, etc.) to be the least entertaining.

But anyway, back on-topic. I think the big problem with Vega is that he's there as a mouthpiece for new players. I feel like that ups his chances of being likable but boring. If anything he's going to be the Luke to Shepard's Han, not the other way around.

I hate Jack and Fenris. But that is more because of their characters being "My-life-have-only-consisted-of-tragedy-and-sorrows-because-we-could-not-come-with-anything-better-to-make-you-care-so-please-start-feeling-empathy-now"! <_<

Sorry. Lost my train of thoughts.

Bioware has indeed told that they plan to use Vegaz to explain things to the player. But if they are good enough they could also use him to give older players another perspective on all the events. Namely the common soldier (without being boring like Jacob). Considering that most of Shepard's crew consist of immortal badasses that could not hurt.

But I think he is going to get alot flak on these forums after release.

No matter what there will always be fans that dislike a certain character. I've even met people who dislike Garrus. Of course those people did not live very long...

Carth Onasi and Kaiden were both whiners (ironic) and Jacob was just boring, hopefully they can create a human character for once that isn't a total lamer. They do just fine with Mordin, Thane, Garrus, Grunt, Wrex and Legion (arguably presented as a male).

Wit. That's what's missing with Carth and with Kaiden.
That's what makes Garrus awesome.

It's not that Garrus isn't serious, isn't brooding sometimes, isn't driven to be a bad boy.. oh no. It's the wit that makes him stand out.

And that's where Carth "Whiner" Onasi and Kaiden "Broods a lot" Alenko fail.

I don't like Han Solo so I wouldn't want him on my ship either.

He's already there. He's called Garrus.

Naw... Garrus is Batman on steroids. :P

What we need is a devilish, charming male individual in the style of Bond or Solo.

so...Shepard?  or joker?

Shepard is w.e he or she wants to be. We're talking about side characters.

Joker is funny but I can't see him as the suave, rougish individual that we want in the style of Solo and Bond.

Han Solo? I approve. It's not like he would replace Garrus either.

Regarding the other male human squadmembers:

I liked Jacob for being an average guy among a term of some downright strange individuals. He's an ex-soldier with a strong sense of duty, mirroring Ashley in some respects. I never understood the hate he generated. Maybe it was the heavy risk or the priiize, but I think that stuff is worth some laughs.

Kaiden however always seemed to be a bit of of a bore and complainer. I thought that Carth in KotOR (while also ****y) had a lot more character.

I don't think a lot of people hate Jacob, it's just that not a lot of people like Jacob. I'm completely ambivalent about him, I couldn't care less what happens to him.

Garrus seems to fit the Han Solo archetype well.

this is absolutely right. I actually didn't want to talk to kaiden in me1 just because everytime I did, he had to do his whole routine first of wiping his forehead and then turning just so you could see his abs through his shirt. which is probably why I always leave him on virmire. he was annoying. Jacob's not so bad, but still kind of boring. Thane is awesome, but a han solo type character would rock.

I agree completely. I need a han solo complement to this game. He needs to be a bad dude that you wouldn't want to mess with, but funny for sure.

Jacob was the only boring one. Kaiden was pretty good.

I'm going to agree with Garrus being Batman. Also, my gigantic crush on Han Solo dictates that I agree with the OP about the male lead. I would dump Kaidan AND Thane for a Han Solo-like male lead in a heartbeat (sorry, Kaidan & Thane).

This. Also throw in a bit of Jayne and Mal in the mix and we'd have one really cool dude on the team, though I think some characters do have the snark and rouge-ish sexiness down already.

And yeah.. Minsc is pretty badass, I miss that guy.

Kaidan and Jacob are.. ok, nothing particularly awesome stands out about them but they certainly get more hate than they deserve. Kaidan is at least saved by sounding like Carth.

As a Jacob fan, I find your theory interesting. I subscribe to the notion that at least part of the other male squadmates' popularity stems from their alien status for a fair amount of players.

I wonder how a picaresque character would work in a video game, though. In literature and film it's simple enough, but in an interactive work of fiction it might not be as easy to make him charming and roguish without infringing on the player's own pride in their hero. Didn't many people find Haer'Dalis annoying or even emasculating when he put the moves on Aerie?

Really? That's actually one of my sticking points with Kaidan, and I liked Carth. Sbarge is almost 50, has a gravelly voice that makes him sound like he's in his 60s, and is playing someone in his 30s. It's just not a good fit at all to me.

How do you know James Vega will not have a Han Solo personality?

Oh it doesn't fit, I just like the voice and.. that's pretty much where my love for Kaidan ends, really. Carth was my first Biowre romance so.. nostalgia.

I like Kaidan more then Carth.
Carth sounds little whiny.

A Jayne-like character would be a krogan (like Grunt, but dumber).
I don't think a Mal-type character could ever do justice to the source, especially since he couldn't be the captain.
And Garrus seems like Han, until you remember: Garrus is a cop; a rogue cop, but a cop none the less. Han (and Mal) is more of an Honorable rogue. They'd be similar, but not the same.
I do fully agree with having Nathan Fillion do voice work, and also Alan Tudyk, but I doubt any major characters don't already have a voice.

The idea that /Kaidan/ was whiney boggles. He only tells you about his past when you ask, never brings it up really, doesn't complain about it. When he does tell you, he ends it with something like "Whelp, that's the past, and I'm over it. How're you sir?' He is remarkably stable, not whiney. Carth's 'issues' came up all the time, Kaidan's didn't.

Same with Jacob, he didn't really have tons of issues. It's too bad his romance subplot sucked the big one.
