As far as we know, the reapers only spend a century or two out of every 50,000 years destroying galactic cizlization, so what do you think they do with the rest of their time?  My theory is that there are multiple galactic civilizations and networks of mass relays thoughout the galaxy.  Accoridng to the codex, only a miniscule portion of the stars in the Milky Way are within a reasonable distance to known mass relays, so there is a lot of unexplored space.  If the reapers built one or more alternate systems of mass relays, spaced far away enough from the known ones, there could be entire cizilizations that Shepard knows nothing of.  I think that the reapers rotate between relay systems and pick on the other ones during their off years. What do you think?

The Reapers are just the automated lab tools of some scientist being that truly is beyond our capacity to understand. They likely have many petri dishes going at the same time, we are just one of their experiments.

If the lab guys tools keep getting broken on experiment #147,522,941 he'll either dump the experiment into the waste disposal unit or give that experiment some special attention. The latter will save Shep and the galaxy, he'll halt his lab tools work, and prolong our destruction for a few days of his time to figure out what these microbes are doing, those days to us will be eons.
