Well, I thought they said they used a bit of Grey inspiration when making Salarians (from on of the GameInformer preview vids for ME3). I'd say it's was STG teams in suits and the Salarians knew about us for centuries but they were surprised out how quickly we figured out Mass Relay tech and covered up what they knew to avoid embarrassment...

The Salarians ARE the Greys in the ME lore. Notice their helmets are almond shaped and have almond-ish eye ports.

This was also explained by one of the artists in GI's ME3 interview series.

Like I said, this was explained by a BW artist.

Also, Greys IRL UFO lore are not always *gray* or naked or short (some of the 'Greys' in Whitley Strieber's works are more than 6ft. tall) . Salarians in ME don't always wear the same color clothes... Please take BW's homage for what it is...

They said in one of the interviews that they wanted the Salarians to look like Grey Aliens of yore.

Umm, from personal experiance, I can tell you the Greys are not Salarians. I mean, like, I got chased around a crop circle, finally got caught then telelported to Area 51 (stopped at the Sonic for a burger in Roswell) and then transported to Switzerland and forcibly probed by Erich von Däniken. All the time it was the Greys holding me down..I even asked them to sing something from the The Pirates of Penzance to make it bearable...to no avail...they had no idea what I was taliking about. Surely a Salarian would know!!!

Bioware's art guys have said in the past (and in the alien design documenataries of the games) that the Salarians were designed (in part) on the alien grays.... so there you have 'em.
