According to the wiki it is possible for him to survive the second attack on Vigil's Keep. Is it possible and if so what do I have to do for him to survive?

Wrong forum; this is DA2 territory, you're looking for the DA:O subsection.
That said:I don't recall Varel to be mentioned specifically in any of the different epilogues in Awakening. So I guess he'll live if you either defend Vigil's Keep, or upgrade the keep fully so it can stand on it's own.
