I agree with the OP. In SF you cannot be too critical about realism, but science is also part of the term SF and therefor I think it is not too much to ask for the illusion of realism.

ME was never SF. ME was space opera or fantasy. It was Star Wars. It was Star Trek.

It had a hot race of blue chicks. It had magical powers. It had a super soldier.

I agree that ME1 was marginally more "realistic" than ME2 but calling it SF is a bit too much.

ME1? Believable? Detailed? Scientific explanations? Remove those glasses.

Yeah the entire theme of the game is based on some magical substance called element zero which is able make a travesty of physical laws. Some idiots buy it as scientific.

Lol, seriously. Some people just can't have fun anymore and take the game for what it is. We all know it's going to be spectacular one way or another.

The catsuit doesn't even show that much skin. It's wrong to make a lady look pretty damnit! Oh wait, just about every RPG released in the last decade has depicted females in armored bikinis with swords. Where's the indignation? No, let's just hate on BW instead.

Wanting female characters to be appropriately armoured and not just pointlessly sexualized = wanting them all to be fat and ugly?

I seriously don't understand why this is such a hard concept for people to grasp.

I seriously don't understand why you are making a big deal out of sexy characters? Do you hate sexy people are something? I don't mean to target you put this has become such a bigger issue then it needed to be that I can only wonder....

Tip for fans: embrace change, previous games don't go away but new games bring new possibilities.

I understand your need for immersion, but their outfits are such a small part of that immersion experience you are seeking imo. I think you're letting such a trivial matter overshadow the great and more important aspects of the series.

they are not small for some of us.

for many a playthrough of mine, Miranda haven't been off the ship unless I couldn't avoid it, becasue of her outfit.  she goes out with me all the time now, ever since second alternate appearance pack (except for when it comes to certain missions - like hazardous enviroment.. or geth and collector ship - you know, facemask city).

taking a character as practical as Ashley and sexing her up for what currently seems to be no good reason and giving no option to players of putting her back into armor?  I need another character that i'll never take into combat like I need to be fightning in high heels in real life.

P.S.  Ashley already looked good without having to resort to artificial trappings.  except she looked good AND practical.  now she just looks sexy

I had no big issue with what squadmates wore during ME2, but I would certainly prefer things handled more realistically.

This isn't change it's the same bullcrap they put in ME2.
The same bullcrap that a large chunk of the fan base hated.

Ashley wasn't wearing heels. And she was definately wearing armor - just light armor.

Not a gamebreaker for me, but yeah, it is an annoyance. Sticking everybody in armor and helmets customized to reflect the character during combat - since unique outfits seems to be all the rage at Bioware these days - would solve this very easily, though, and wouldn't at all detract from the "artistic vision".

Mhm. Any video game fan should embrace these words because change is just part of the industry, whether you like it or not. Adapt or get left behind, basically.

Anyway, FWIW, as a woman, I have never been bothered by the outfits in the ME series, I'd hardly label even Miranda's catsuit as overly-sexualised. Trust me, I've seen much worse in other games. We're almost spoiled here, seeing as FemShep is treated equally to ManShep (in terms of appearance, though the topic of seperate animations is best suited for another thread).

And as a sci-fi fan, I accept that it doesn't make sense for the skin-exposure and the rebreather masks to be present but at the end of the day it doesn't bother me that much. There is much, much more to these games than the realism factor, we could nit-pick endlessly about what things make sense in the real world and what things don't.

As long as the gameplay is enjoyable and there is enough depth added to the story and characters, what do I care about a tiny bit of artistic license here or there?

I don't feel offended as woman at how the women are treated in this franchise. I do not feel bothered that Ashley has a new look (of which we have seen very little of so far). I am slightly bothered that there may be some inconsistency with Ashley's character but a woman can change a lot in two or three years, and that's really up to the writers and artists who have created that character isn't it?

Maybe I'm a minority here but.. it just astounds me to see the gameplay director being borderline attacked for defending the direction her game is going in.

I see that now, but to call it deal-breaking? (referring to OP) You're being too harsh on yourself.

It's what RPG-tards do. Anything that doesn't fit their narrow vision is met with hostility. Thank goodness those days are gone.

I always thought Male Shepard wore his shirts kind of tight, but apparently it's okay if he does it.

Yes but they went out of their way to explain this magic pixie dust using 'plausible' scientific explanations and it remained consistent throughout the game.

Now we've just got "f*ck off it looks cool".

Yet they always ask for more choices and more options but when they are presented with them, they make the sam narrow choices they always used to make. It's a common trend. Are people really that fixated on the physical appearance of the characters in these games? Aren't their personalities and attitudes more important than the pixels?

I agree completely with the OP. Seeing people on exposed space platforms or where they should have full armor or space suits/breathing apparatus's is an immersion breaker.

You do know shields provide the main protection, right? Armour is just a back-up layer of protection.

Besides, I see nobody here complaining about Benezia's outfit in ME1...characters in ME have always been sexualized to an extent, unfortunately, but it's not nearly as bad as in other games, and the characters actually have personality.

Sure didn't sound plausible. In fact, I almost stopped playing because it ruined immersion every time I went through a Giant Tuning Fork™.

I understand the point of the OP, as I had the same problem going from ME 1 to ME 2. I liked characters in combat situations looking combat ready. I liked characters in hazardous environments looking protected from said hazardous environments. Fighting in high heels and going into corrosive atmospheres with a naked chest and a rebreather is a dealbreaker for several of us.
Seeing a formerly level-headed and practical character destroy her former image makes it worse.

I'm sorry but I can't help think this is in fact trolling.

Either that or you're just plain ... silly (to be nice about it)

Me wanting believable consistent non-sexualized atire in combat has nothing to do with some deep seated hatred for 'sexy people'.
In RL I am myself a vain shallow bastard, I just don't need a constant hard on when playing videogames and instead prefer a tad more 'realism'.

Now that isn't so hard to wrap your head around is it pumpkin?
