According to the wiki it is possible for him to survive, is this true and if so what do I have to do?

It's possible for him to survive. He survived in my games, but all I can tell you is that I saved Amaranthine and didn't solve the conspiracy.

If you save Amaranthine, it doesn't say whether he lives or dies. It's only if you save the keep that you actually witness his unfortunate fate.
Pehaps if Varel makes an appearance in a future DA game, then we can finally see if he lives, or if he does actually die during both scenarios. The epilogue doesn't say either way.

I think if you import into GoA you get a letter from "Seneschal Garavel" even if you saved Amaranthine and didn't see Varel die. I think the implication is that Varel dies either way and Garavel takes his place. I would love for Varel to survive, because he was awesome.

Aw yeah.
Varel: (with polite scorn) "It's a very Orlesian thing to do."
I need a screenshot of him saving the Warden from that arrow. Varel's got your back. Also this:

Varel was the best thing about the expansion ~

He's a silver fox. I was gutted that he died and I think Shinobu is correct in that he won't survive either way.

Let's just pretend GoA didn't happen and Varel survives.

Varel was one of the best things about Awakening, along with beheading Ser Temmerly the Ox.
