Are you looking for roleplaying or power??
Revenant is a good gun, but if you use the Mattock early you might be a bit disappointed in it's performance. The Widow Soldier with the Mattock is the most overpowered and some say broken class in the game. The Mattock under Heightened Arush will out-damage just about EVERY OTHER GUN IN THE GAME.

If you are running Revenant then general consensus is use Hardened Arush.
If you are running Widow then run Heightened Arush.

This is what happened to me.  I used the Mattock before I ever got around to trying the Revenant.  As a result, I've never felt compelled to use the Revenant consistently.

I tried the Revenant first and loved using it. Still do. But the Mattock is better, so yeah you need to be aware that it isn´t going to be an upgrade at all.

The Widow and Claymore are pretty cool too, and they aren´t actually downgrades.

There's another Soldier thread around on the 1st pages. You may want to look at that.

BTW: Revvy + Viper + GPS / EVI / whatever shotgun + Carnifex or Predator is a fun little build.

I know the Mattock cleans house with it's damage output but honestly, I still think the Revenant outclsses it in certain playstyles/situations. If you're really good about being aggressive with closing, I'd argue the Revenant can still whoop the Mattock w/o having to stress about ammo count at times.

That being said - gotta love that Mattock haha :) I'm glad it's coming back in ME3 along with the Rev.

^Mattock outpaces the Revenant everytime unless you're tired or are having a bad day. However, you're right that the Revvy has things to offer that the Mattock doesn't - namely, a huge ammo clip (less frequent reloads), better AoE (the inaccuracy is better vs hordes) and the ability to absolutely breeze past big boss fights (mainly due to ease of use).

Fun & efficient aren't always the same. [Although I do have a blast with the Mattock even though it breaks a lot of the game for Soldiers]

Boss fights are way more fun with the Revenant. It's like you're not even trying.

I feel that way about the Mattock. To me the fun with the Revvy is you have to [comparatively] get up close & personal. Also the sound & feel when you go full-auto-Rambo-berserk with the Revvy is a rush.

The Revenant is significantly better than the Mattock against things like YMIR mechs and the Shadow Broker - boss-level shields are easy prey, while the Mattock doesn't truly shine until the shields are cracked and the armor is exposed. With generic mooks, the Mattock's poor showing against shields is minimized, but boss fights really make it stand out - and if you've taken the Widow/Mattock combination, you're going to have problems.

The Revenant may not be as good, on paper, as the Mattock with Heightened AR, but the Revenant can be really fun on hardcore or lower difficulty.

On insanity it's a PITA because with the Revenant, you're going to be out of cover a lot, and on insanity shields last about a millisecond. It's also got accuracy issues. The situation improves a great deal, however, once you research Hardened Shields and Assault Rifle Accuracy, but that usually comes a bit later in the game. When I play a Revenant soldier, I pretty much exclusively use the Viper and my shotgun until I get Hardened Shields and Assault Rifle Accuracy upgrades.

I don't really know what you're talking about with the boss shields daqs, the Mattock and Revenant have the exact same multiplier against them, meaning the Mattock does higher damage.

The Revenant has a slightly higher multiplier against armor actually, but its damage is still lower.

Oh and you're not going to have problems if you have the Mattock/Widow combination. Besides, you could just switch to the GPS if you want something with a good multiplier against shields.
