I know there isn't a consesus about the all time great Sci- Fi, but I am wondering where does the community think Mass Effect will rank after the conclusion of Shepard's story. I would like to consider the story on the all time great Sci-Fi list. If I had to rank them I know Mass Effect would be in my top ten maybe even in the top five. Where are you placing Mass Effect on your personal list?

1. Ghost In the Shell
2. X-Files(TV)
3. Star Trek (TV)
4. Blade Runner
5. Mass Effect
6. Contact
7. Star Wars
8. The Matrix
9. Terminator 1984
10.Alien

Are you asking me to rank a story which has the Act 3 still missing?

Anyways, as much fun as Mass Effect is, it's still nowhere in the top ten in my opinion.

My top ten sci-fi list list would be full of books by Iain M. Banks.

This, I'm afraid. ME's story is good by videogame standards, but compare it to books or even movies and it's really pretty bad. The game industry has a long way to go when it comes to storytelling.

After 10 hours worth of story between two games I think we can make an honest assessment of the games quality of story. I rank it pretty high. I wonder would the game be treated with much more respect it it were a motion picture.

I can't decide on a list but I'm glad someone mentioned Arthur C. Clarke (2001 plus others).

A few others to consider:

Starship Troopers
Sunshine
Solaris
Space Above And Beyond (SAAB)
Homeworld

It is complicated to rank a movie and a game in the same list.

I would put it right behind Star Wars. Which is number one.

Star Wars is not sci-fi. It's a fantasy series set in space.

Mass Effect is #1 on my list. It would be #2 if Battlestar didn't fall apart (in my opinion) at the end.

As a game Mass Effect easily takes the #1 spot. But as sci-fi as a whole? Not enough of it has been incorporated into pop-culture for it to be in the top 10, especially when compared to Starship Troopers, Warhammer 40k, Star Wars, Star Trek, and Alien.

Your opinion on whether it is sci-fi or sci-fan, but to the vast majority it is sci-fi, so don't start with the "You're wrong" posts ;)

I dont really care much about sci fi, but its not going to rate very hi, parts of it are just stupid.

PERSONALY I would put Mass effect ahead of Starwars - the films and yes I include the originals as well. The second film was the best but they are mostly badly acted have fairly simplistic plots and the direction of 1 and 3 is shaky at best.

So on to the list

1. Isaac Asimov collected works - so many ideas in scifi are owed to this man
2. Blade runner
3. Philip K. Dick collected works - some very badly made films are based on his work but some are pure gold as seen above
4. Mass effect - games and the extended universe in books and comics as a whole. It is a very deep and evolving universe which to me in its short and limited tenure has garnered more of a sense of the real than starwars has in its decades of existence.
5. Doctor who
6. Commonwealth and Void series P.F. Hamilton
7. Starwars - the collected works with comics and a certain companies GAME included
8. Star trek the collected works there of
9. Ghost in the shell - Stand alone complex included
10. Matrix

I love the concept, but the execution so far, in both ME1 and ME2, leaves a lot to be desired. It's still not as compelling as my favorite sci-fi series, the reimagined Battlestar Galactica.

Yes, it has bigger bad guys and bigger scale, but those aren't what make a great sci-fi.

What makes great Sci-Fi? What about Mass Effect is lacking?

1. Bladerunner
2. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (the books)
3. Mass Effect
4. The Hungry City Chronicles (I'd argue that these are sci-fi, but others may disagree)
5. Firefly
6. Star Wars
7. Alien/Aliens
8. Halo
9. Matrix
10. Terminator

I find the Mass Effect universe to be pretty deep and rich, probably helped by the fact that as a game you effectively have 60 hours per character in that universe. Few franchises, other than maybe Star Trek and other sci-fi TV shows, have as much time in which you can explore their universe (depending on whether you include books as well there may well be some other franchises that take over 60 hours to experience). Also, as a game, you can interact with the universe in a way no other franchise allows you to. Its the only good sci-fi RPG franchise I've ever come across. There may be others, in fact I'm sure there are, but of the games I've played Mass Effect has the best realised universe, and the amount of time you spend in it on a single playthrough allows you to really lose yourself in it in a way only books can do.

Anyone who is familiar with the fundmental differences between Sci-Fi and Fantasy knows that Star Wars is 100% fantasy. The idea that Sci-Fi is defined by the setting of outer space or being "futuristic" in aesthetic is nonsense.

Star Wars makes no effort to explain anything at all in its universe. There is no kind of internal logic in Star Wars. Things exist simply to serve the story, which is how fantasy works. It is just as much a fantasy as Lord of the Rings.

Mass Effect on the other hand, is deeply rooted in logic. Its not hardcore sci-fi, but its pretty close, IMO. Or Mass Effect 1 was atleast.
