1. Sliders- I love this show, my favourite Sci-fi series ever. Especially the first couple of seasons, before it kind of lost it's way.
2. Star Trek:NG
3. Gattaca- In my top 10 favourite films of all time.
4. Space above and beyond-From the creators of the X-files. An interesting take on humanities future. The "Chig" version of the red baron was one of the most menacing bad guys in sci-fi history for me.
5. Panzer Dragoon Saga- Possibly my favourite RPG of all time. Although it may be considered fantasy rather than Sci-fi.
6. Fallout 3- I'm a big fan of post apocalyptic Sci-fi.
7. Mass Effect series.

Metropolis (1927)
2001 A Space Odyssey
Planet Of The Apes (1968)
THX 1138
Space 1999 (S1) (awfully terribly cheesy tv series but there were interesting concepts in it; runaway planets for one)
Blade Runner
The Terminator
Tron
Gattaca
Akira
Ghost In The Shell (plus movies + SAC)
The Matrix
ME1
Babylon 5
Battlestar Galactica (redux)
ST (TOS)

Favourite Primarily-Visual Science Fiction Media
(in no specific order)
- Alien and Aliens - my head says Alien was the better movie, but Ripley kicks ass in the second, plus the second has too many memorable lines
- Blade Runner - Roy Batty's death scene is one of the most poignant moments in any genre for me
- Predator - IMO, Arnie's best movie.
- Terminator 1 and 2 - the 3rd and the reboot irritated me beyond belief, but the first one asks questions every bit as profound as Blade Runner about the nature of destiny and human identity, while the second is just so much fun
- Robocop 1 - I'd still buy that for a dollar!
- The Matrix - I feel that it should never have had sequels made, they simply diluted the impact of the story of Cyber-Buddha.
- Empire Strikes Back - easily the best of the SWU movies for me
- Star Trek DS9 - easily the best performances and the most nuanced characters and plot of all the Star Trek Franchises.... IMNSHO
- Battlestar Galactica reboot - I have somewhat mixed feelings about the way they chose to resolve the series, but it had great writing, performances, storylines and made me both think and feel
- Akira - the first Manga movie I ever saw, back in the day
- Wizardry: Crusaders of the Dark Savant - with a name like that, to reveal itself as being an essentially sci-fi universe with fantasy trappings seems odd, but still one of my alltime fave RPGs
- Fallout 3 - have a soft spot for one and two, but the graphics just gave such a strong immersion, despite the wet ending...
- ME1 - I prefer the story to ME2, though I prefer to play ME2. What can I say?
edit - forgot Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, LOVED that game!

It's the best sci-fi game (for me anyways), but when you also include books and movies, Mass Effect is around the 30th.

Where's the Firefly love?
It was just too gorram unintentionally short for me to top-ten it. It's great to see such a cult following remaining for a short-lived masterpiece, but it would really need to have been at least twice as long for me to give it that kind of a nudge.

I adore firefly. I really wish Joss Whedon had had the time to really develop that.

I'm sure it would have been fantastic. It also would have ended up in my top ten list for sure.

You people disgust me (joking, but seriously), a sci-fi discussion, nay a sci-fi ranking discussion, and not once is Ender's Game or its series mentioned? What the hell is wrong with you people?!?!
But you guys do get credit for StarCraft and Battlestar Galactica.
Check my post on page 2 of this thread.

Mass Effect will be my number 1 Sci-fi saga, atleast until they fall flat on story or ideas. This is simply because i'm very excited for the climax in the third chapter, and i'm impatient about the effects of my choices.
Oh, and i like violent, bloody Sci-Fi's. So i REALLY hope Mass Effect 3 will have some awesome gore.
Every other Sci-fi piece i've played, watched or read all fall short of the second place. I might place Star Wars and Dead Space before the others just because i love Darth Vader and Necromorphs.
Want violent and bloody Sci Fi read Legacy of the Aldenata by John Ringo. Day one of the invasion of Earth, the entire population of Fredericksburg VA is killed and eaten. There are plenty of really dark, gritty scifi stories out there, they're just in dead tree format.

1) 2001: A space odyessy, the books but mainly the film...2010 was an alright sequel, I suppose.
2) Star wars, at least before episode 1, but even then some of the EU was a bit silly
3) Tron...re-defined visuals, infact arguably so did 2001 and Star wars
4) Blade Runner, obviously
5) Moon
6) The Matrix (excluding revolutions)
7) Metropolis, this is an obvious pic
8) Mass Effect...great universe
9) Dune
10) Star Trek
Honorary mentions to Stargate, Half-life, Halo, Doctor Who, Firefly, deadspace and a bunch of others. There's probably other deserving ones that should be on that list, but I digress

No books.
Also not too much fuss over the difference between sci-fi, space opera, and cyberpunk.
With those "rules" in mind, here's my list:
1. The Matrix (the first one)
2. Bladerunner
3. Contact
4. Alien (the first one) and Aliens (the second one)
5. Ghost in the Shell
6. Gattaca
7. Taken (the 6-part TV miniseries)
Can't think of any more right now. Suffice it to say that ME is not in my top ten.
