DISCLAIMER: Just like any other social or political movement, the feminist movement has different facets and subgroups with a varying range of ideologies. The following posts represent one face of this movement. Be aware of this before you post, so as to not unfairly mischaracterize all feminists in one way or another. This thread is about discussing whether or not you agree with her and why, and what direction character designs should go. While I agree with her that the rear-shots of Miranda are excessive, on most every other panel I disagree with her - it seems she believes any pose or shot from the waist up is some damning evidence of sexism on Bioware's part.

I also disagree with her about Jack. To me, Jack is about being rebellious, anti-social, and anti-authoritarian, hence her tattoos and lack of clothing. While they might not be realistic when she walks out in space, I really do not believe she was designed to be a "fanservice" type character.

Jack really isn't made with fanservice in mind. Most men don't consider bald women covered with tattoos to be very sexy - granted, I do, but I'm in a minority. She wasn't created with hotness in mind.

I really don't understand what the writer means by....

"Still, it was disappointing that Miranda’s mission was stereotyped, even if it was entertaining and better written than some of the other missions."

I read these and took it with a grain of salt. People such as this blogger seem to be so caught up in certain ideals that it pervades everything around them.

Wasn't this posted before?

Already read them. Reasonable in the first part article (the bottom one in your links) but after that she pretty much goes into a stereotypical 'femi****' tirade.

"Why couldn't Mirands's LM be like Zaeed's or Grunt's"?

"Jack is an example of a sexist, oversexualized character design"?

Of all the video games out there, she chooses ME as her example of sexism? She should be glad ME lets you play as a female at all. What a joke.

Sounds like somebody just watched ME2 videos on youtube, and decided to write an article about that. :P

If she was ripping on Jack what does she have to say about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series? Geesh.

Feminism has never been about equality. The clue is in the name: feminism.

That said, having skim-read some of what she wrote I find myself totally agreeing with her.

While I agree Mass Effect 2 took a sharp turn for the juvenile in terms of female costume design (and Male Gaze was in full effect), I'd also say this blogger is just looking for problems.

There were many times in Mass Effect 2 where I did role my eyes (Miranda's famous booty shot, Samara's out of character cleavage, Jack as a whole), but 80% of those shot's are entirely innocent.

What.? Her extremely oversexualized body is exactly why I am NOT looking at her as much as I can, because those forced gazes are awful.

And don't get me started on those outfits. I want proper armor!

A genetically engeneered "perfect woman" created from the modified DNA of a man, who is trying to create a better life for her similarly genetically engineered twin sister, who is several years younger by the way, is such an obvious stereotype. Damn Bioware for creating such nonsense.

Another person in another forum made this observation.

Sexy is a very vague term. Just because the men aren't naked, it doesn't mean they're not sexualized. What's considered "sexy" on a man is different than what's considered "sexy" on a women...and even that varies between people, cultures, and groups.

What do you think about this? I think the overwhelming representation of men being these muscular heroes with strong jaws is as unrealistic a depiction of men as the skimpy clothes are of women, but it seems that this isn't criticized as vocally.

onelifecrisis, lets not go there because it will take us somewhere we don't. Its inciteful, regardless if its true or not.

On topic:

Some people have become so accustomed to see things through a certain prism or spectrum that it colors everything. They will see something in nothing, nothing in something, and everything in between. The writer, while she does have valid points, is like one person alluded to before; a stereotypical feminist. There have been posters on this forum that have written better critiques of Bioware's inclusion of women, and things to improve on. The article in the OP should be taken with a bag, or crate of salt, simply for the fact it is coming from someone who seems a little too jaded.

Thank you for the explanation.
