Drop me in the socialist feminist category -- and if you look at the culture in the game ME, that's where it is. Equality among the sexes and races from a legal standpoint. There is still racism and sexism. Enforcing employment laws and the way people are treated on their jobs is one thing. People's attitudes toward one another is something different.

For ME criticism, I can go with these things:

* In ME1 I kept waiting for Benezia to have a "wardrobe malfunction." You guys have to admit that outfit was a just a tad over the top. pun intended.
* Samara's outfit also was way out of character for the Asari. The strip club dancers have more clothes on. Gratuitous cleavage. Unless it's common for matriarchs to show off, but then the bartender didn't.
* At first I had a facepalm moment with Miranda, but after I found out more about her, in all fairness she was designed by her father, and from her father's genes with genetic modification to give her the edge in appearance and everything else. He probably used a pin-up for a model so every feature is exaggerated.
* I had no problem with Jack. I see women like that around these parts at tattoo shows. Although I will say the lipstick was too much. Jack didn't strike me as the lipstick type, unless the color was a tattoo as well. I also see WNBA players with a lot of ink, too. So what's the problem here? That and you get an alternate appearance to put a vest on her. I put the vest on her because frankly I thought it looked better.
* Kasumi: Very modest.

(* Thane: button your shirt. Are you going to a 1970s disco?)

I could go on about female characters, but this is about it in ME. I won't do a social analysis because I really don't care about them. What I could go on about is the MMORPGs with the female characters running around in lingerie on the battlefield in the middle of winter. Can I have a facepalm? I'll stop now.

His lungs will get blocked that way. It's actually the exact opposite argument for appearance vs substance.

You want a more conservative look for Thane, his condition gets worse. ;)

Also, games are not to be real. Sure, some games take aspects from realism, but overall the games still are a break from reality.

I've not read the thread entirely, but specifically on this point:

The problem is people idealizing what they see in these "breaks" from reality. Eventually they compare themselves to , and come to expect from themselves , the aesthetic values set by the industry (The industry at large : Movies/ Music/ Fashion /Professional sports and so on) . And the bar is set too high , if it is attainable at all without cheating : Surgeries , Drugs , C.G.I. Failures and disappointments ensues and can lead significant psychological repercussions to those involved.

And if you think that you're above all this , think again. Marketing is a multi-billion dollar industry because its proven to work.

That said , i don't think its particularly useful to argue parts of the problem , like games for example , since it can be so easily "Dismissed" as trivial amusement. Taken in totality however, people are always on this "break" from reality as you put it, we live in a society of escapism.

Meh , screw it. Imma joining the Reapers...

I have to admit, I seriously lol'd at the level of cleavage (both gluteus and mammory) and I decided to embrace the joke of over-the-top female emphasis in the ME series in both my signature and avatar.

But don't let that get you wrong about my opinions. Women have been oversexualised in most games, you wouldn't want to stare at a female jabba the hutt or something would you? Video games push us away from reality and somewhat they do a damn good job in doing so... but to what extent? Look at Gears of War and what happened to poor Chris Redfield in Resident Evil 5. He grew gigantic muscles and a massive square head.

Most male leads in super macho action games are beefed up (Gears, RE5, Bulletstorm, etc etc) or feature muscular male characters. Female characters have been made in all sorts but they usually focus on... well... just look at Ivy from Soul Calibur. *snorts and laughs* it's just ridiculous.

But ripping on a game is just... well look at some movies. It's like watching American Pie and stating how it makes women look like objects. It's a movie about guys trying to get laid with attractive women in-a-nutshell. Do you really load up a game such as The Witcher and say "GEE, I SURE COULD DO WITH A MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIP WITH THAT SEXUALISED WOMAN WHO CAN USE MAGIC TO STRIP HER CLOTHES OFF. HOW DO I KNOW THAT?! DAMN YOU KOTAKU." or whatever.

You have to realise that Miranda is meant to be this... okay I gotta admit BioWare really did make her just a walking piece of ass until you actually spoke to her and then she became walking ass with meaning and a background that you cared about. It's just that I can't take the "blogger" seriously. "I kill people with my boobs, oh my boobs do X and Y, boobs are coming to get you."

It's like her sole purpose (lol sole survivor, dunno why that popped up anyhow... where was I... ah yes!) It's like her sole purpose was just to focus on this. Yes, character design is just ridiculous in ME2 and I too agree totally with that, Miranda's butt-latex suit, Samara's IM A JUSTICAR AND CANNOT BE IN RELATIONSHIPS BUT IN THE MEANTIME HERE IS MY CLEAVAGE and Jack Ms. Hardcore Nekkid Lady but it's just... after reading what OP posted, I just can't take it seriously. Sorry, don't get me wrong or see me as some anti-female forumite or whatever but all I can do is lol at both the blogger and BioWare for their designs. Because laughter is the best cure.

Oooo. I'm gonna get hell for this but I agree.

Does the blogger even know that there are female concept artist that worked on creating those characters? She talks like "OMG! Look what these men are doing!" When it is obvious that the development team is both male and female. No one wants to see ugly people in video games. Hell all of the main men in ME are good looking as well.

Kadian is a good looker. So is Jacob.

Garrus has a HUGE fan girl fallowing and so does Thane. They are all sexy in their own rights. But that's okay. lol. Hot men is fine. But hot ladies NO!

 I agree man.

Females aren't supposed to play video games. Is that feminist really stupid enough to think that Bioware would market their game towards a small minority group (feminists) that doesn't play video games?

The true ME fanbase is not some organization of perverts. Many are very, very story driven. Everything and everyone isn't perfect in life but every now and again we see something that appeals to us as individuals in real life do we not?

The true bioware fan is made up of many different types of individuals.  Some of her points were things I as a "true fan" agree with.  Some I didn't.

What I meant, was that the focus on story is going to be a recurring theme not the overall focus on a characters physical attributes. You know, it's really time that people who criticize a form of media entertainment to really look at it as entertainment instead of giving one view too much attention. Bioware gave an option to hit the reporter, how many domestic violence organizations came forward? Then let's talk of the genocide issue. I don't recall the Jewish and people of Darfur coming forward to say that it was in referance to Germany's Adolf Hitler mentality.

Even with the same sex romances. It's just extremely disturbing that while the game does give you choices to make even though some of those choices go against certain cultures and beliefs, a group will still over analylize something as trivial as character builds. If all women in Mass Effect were A and B cups what would the blogger rant about next, lack of the C and D cups? Sure the camera angles showed the body which in all honesty looked great but those same angles did not once make the game less serious or robbed the gamer of a great story.

My real gripe is the lack of openess that anyone doesn't show. People can argue about the good and bad of something all day long but just because one writes over 10 paragraphs doesn't make them right. And just because a few people agree with what someone wrote doesn't provide real justification.

When bloggers such as this offer as many aspects into the whole of the game, then I have no issue whatsoever except the occasional "I don't agree with that." But when someone is so focused on how a character looks and doesn't even scratch the surface on who that character is, then I have a problem. She makes a couple of good points but she refuses to acknowledge that the game does not in any way reflect what the game truly is.

Let's look at from a real life aspect even though it's a game. If Asari were real could it be that the older some of them got, the more firm their bodies become opposed to some humans getting older and begining to lose firmness? To me, her argument was greatly based on a characters build which pushes me towards my first post saying that if all characters were created according to how she expects them to look, would she then be happy? That blogger could be the epitome of the perfect woman in some elses eyes and she could be just as repulsive to others. Does that make her less attractive in the long run? No.

So while she's tearing down what may be beautiful in the creative department at Bioware, she's knowingly telling others that the way she percieves beauty is the "correct" way it should be seen.

Thanks.  This I can agree with.  :)
