This would be nice I think.  I have a very nice fan art of Carth with just a Christmas bow held in the right spot.  And I've seen some great fan art of Kaidan, Alistair and Carth standing all manly and bare chested.  BioWare just needs to include some of that in their games.       The only one I can think of that is in the game right now is the Jacob romance and we need some that is just there to look at, not dependent on a romance track.

No, we need more realism if anything. If I want to get critical of the art direction, I say do it like they didi in ME1.

She has a point though, especially in light of Ashley's partially unzipped armor and revelation of her Miranda-butt.

Someone on Bioware's character modeling staff has a bubble butt fetish...

What? Just like men aren't supposed to play with Barbie dolls.

When females play video games they are just seeking attention.

Except from the fact that there are some VG that are specifically developed for a female audience. But anyway, why the software houses like Bethesda and Bioware put in their game the possibiliy to choose the PC gender? I think that the males that plays as female aren't that much. It'd be only a waste of time and resources.
Anyway, thank you. I laughed for 5 minutes for your post.

It's obvious you don't play many MMOs. The amount of sick people in this world always seems to shock me

Are you suggesting that male players using female avatars is sick, or am I misunderstanding you?

No.  You put them in riped or nice tight jeans and t-shirts, open shirts or shirtless.  Haven't you ever read Cosmo magazine?  Or seen a Chippendale show?  Really.

lol, you made me remember an episode of one of my favourite series (How I Met your Mother)
Anyway, I forget about MMORPG. But still, if female didn't have to play to VG, I don't see the reason to give the possibility to choose gender. I don't know how much females play RPG, but I remember an article that stated that the number of female gamers is increasing, and not only in casual game.

Edit: I am not saying that for males playing female characters is wrong. But the options to choose the gender of the PC is something that's fundamental for a good amount of female gamers.

The concept of mature is woefully absent in video games. This medium will never graduate from titillation until taken seriously.

Wouldn't it be more - why don't the guys complain about how they are represented?  As a women, she's complaining about the female characters because she's female.   I'd think guys would be the ones to complain about how the male characters are treated.

Guys typically have the sense to realize mass media is not created with the intent to undermine their place in society. It's one of the feats we get at first level. Women have it on their list of bonus feats, but they have to actually choose it to take advantage.

Bonus feats.  Like it.  You made me laugh.

Also, why do women never complain about good looking guys in the media? You don't see men complaining as much as some women when it comes to the over-sexuality of the same gender. People want to see attractive people. This goes both ways.

I've only seen the one shot of Jacob with his shirt off.  I've seen many shots of Miranda's butt and Samara's boobs.  I've seen Jacob in his armor, which might be form fitting but I don't remember anything as obvious as the female shots.  And I googled "Jacob from Mass effect".  Even then one of Miranda's butt was included.

It's not the outfit so much as the camera angles they used.

I take it you haven't seen Jacob's romance scene then where he takes off his shirt and the camera focuses on his body?

Yes I have and that's the only scene I've seen Jacobs body.  If there are others, please let me know so I can start watching for them.:)

reminds me of those creeps who play MMO's as female characters to dance naked in the middle of town and beg for gold.

I was saying that what Oblivious was saying was generalizing guys who play as girls sometimes.

I thought he was being sarcastic. I don't see why a man can't play a female Shep or why a woman can't play male one. It's not you,it's just a game character.

Drop me in the socialist feminist category -- and if you look at the culture in the game ME, that's where it is. Equality among the sexes and races from a legal standpoint. There is still racism and sexism. Enforcing employment laws and the way people are treated on their jobs is one thing. People's attitudes toward one another is something different.

For ME criticism, I can go with these things:

* In ME1 I kept waiting for Benezia to have a "wardrobe malfunction." You guys have to admit that outfit was a just a tad over the top. pun intended.
* Samara's outfit also was way out of character for the Asari. The strip club dancers have more clothes on. Gratuitous cleavage. Unless it's common for matriarchs to show off, but then the bartender didn't.
* At first I had a facepalm moment with Miranda, but after I found out more about her, in all fairness she was designed by her father, and from her father's genes with genetic modification to give her the edge in appearance and everything else. He probably used a pin-up for a model so every feature is exaggerated.
* I had no problem with Jack. I see women like that around these parts at tattoo shows. Although I will say the lipstick was too much. Jack didn't strike me as the lipstick type, unless the color was a tattoo as well. I also see WNBA players with a lot of ink, too. So what's the problem here? That and you get an alternate appearance to put a vest on her. I put the vest on her because frankly I thought it looked better.
* Kasumi: Very modest.

(* Thane: button your shirt. Are you going to a 1970s disco?)

I could go on about female characters, but this is about it in ME. I won't do a social analysis because I really don't care about them. What I could go on about is the MMORPGs with the female characters running around in lingerie on the battlefield in the middle of winter. Can I have a facepalm? I'll stop now.

Nice post.

I have to agree with you. Women have been oversexualized in not only video games but in movies as well. In fairness in the action genre of movies and games the men have been overly beefed up. There's not enough steroids in the world to make guys look like Marcus and Dom in Gears. Marcus' biceps are bigger than my waist. And like Arnold in the original Conan movie? How many guys look like that?

I did a major facepalm about the portrayal.

Jack though seems to have more of an androgynous air about herself, compensating for her lack of self confidence in being as stereotypically over the top butch as she can be.

Star Trek Voyager? they had the actress who played Seven of Nine in a corset.

I really liked the way both the men and women were portrayed in Battlestar Galactica in the human fleet. Every one of them was a flawed character.

I have to admit, I seriously lol'd at the level of cleavage (both gluteus and mammory) and I decided to embrace the joke of over-the-top female emphasis in the ME series in both my signature and avatar.

But don't let that get you wrong about my opinions. Women have been oversexualised in most games, you wouldn't want to stare at a female jabba the hutt or something would you? Video games push us away from reality and somewhat they do a damn good job in doing so... but to what extent? Look at Gears of War and what happened to poor Chris Redfield in Resident Evil 5. He grew gigantic muscles and a massive square head.

Most male leads in super macho action games are beefed up (Gears, RE5, Bulletstorm, etc etc) or feature muscular male characters. Female characters have been made in all sorts but they usually focus on... well... just look at Ivy from Soul Calibur. *snorts and laughs* it's just ridiculous.
.......
It's like her sole purpose (lol sole survivor, dunno why that popped up anyhow... where was I... ah yes!) It's like her sole purpose was just to focus on this. Yes, character design is just ridiculous in ME2 and I too agree totally with that, Miranda's butt-latex suit, Samara's IM A JUSTICAR AND CANNOT BE IN RELATIONSHIPS BUT IN THE MEANTIME HERE IS MY CLEAVAGE and Jack Ms. Hardcore Nekkid Lady but it's just... after reading what OP posted, I just can't take it seriously. Sorry, don't get me wrong or see me as some anti-female forumite or whatever but all I can do is lol at both the blogger and BioWare for their designs. Because laughter is the best cure.

^^^^ That says it all in the end..... giant facepalm. No woman is like that. See the italic. I don't see you that way. I just wish the gaming companies would present more reasonable appearances, and that goes for both genders. I mean if you look at the huge size of the men in the games, and then look at the wispy overexaggerated way they present the females, then you make a love interest? OMG. Someone is going to be crushed. So I have to laugh. The problem is that it removes the suspension of disbelief.

Just because I'm a woman and a feminist doesn't mean I agree with all of the blogs. I didn't find the appearances offensive. I found them ridiculous. Hence I tend to agree with much of what you wrote.

Sometimes the sexualization is because of who the game is being marketed to.

Frankly, Bioware has invited this type of commentary.

I really like DA and ME, but could do without the gender politics. It is just emblematic of how totalitarian our "free and open society" is when even fantasy games are invaded by such cultural controls. If you think it is about freedom and acceptance, get a clue. It is very repressive and conformist.

Yeah my point was that girls play video games as an attention-seeking behavior.  Since you are a male you don't **** for attention.
