So I was reading the http://fidgit.com/ar...otion_addic.php

"Health potions in Dragon Age aren't called potions. They're called poultices. Which is a real word. I looked it up*. It's from the Latin word for thick paste, which makes it sound kind of gross. And it is. A poultice is a wet handful of goo you apply to a wound. The characters in Dragon Age don't seem to know this. They keep drinking the poultices. The animation shows them lifting a vial to their lips, tossing their heads back, and being infused with a healthy glow, as if they were doing shots of wheat grass."

I hate to nitpick, but really Bioware?

Though the main reason Im posting this is because so far hes been doing fine without a Spirit Healer, which I keep seeing people ask about.

it also matters on difficulty, and pc or console.

That is odd. I thought they were called potions.

Well, if health potions tasted good, and had no other side effects, they'd quickly become addictive.  You don't want Zevren getting hooked and drinking up all your potions, er, poultices, do you?

In the post from the guy who came from Warden's Quest (link below), he says potions are really expensive and come in limited supply at vendors.  Given that, he says a spirit healer or any healer is a must.  Of course, he was rushing because of the competition...

I have not watched any vids of potions being actually drunk but I assume the reasoning that somewhere along the line in alchemical procedure they used a substance that makes the poultice toss back easier?

If they were speaking English, I'd agree that "poultice" is an inappropriate word for a beverage. But since they're in Ferelden, on another planet which is not Earth and which contains no land called England, nor tongue known as English, they're hardly bound by our ideas of language. Obviously in the world of Dragon Age, a poultice is something you drink.

Well the blogger guy, Tom something, said it was hard to come by ingredients for 'potions' until he found certain vendors. He was only playing on normal difficulty though.

The guy from Warden's Quest didn't have time to experiment with Herbalism and shopping around for poultrices like the guy that wrote the quotation that started this thread. The guy whose quotation this thread is based on found a way to buy cheap elfroot at the Dalish supplier then buy cheap glass vials from the Dwarven supplier to make his poultrices for a cheaper rate than what can be bought in the stores. This is what I'm planning on doing. I plan on dedicating one character (probably my mage) to having the Herbalism skill.

I seem to recall now that in the Giant-Bomb preview they were titled 'poultices', but I never let my mind linger on the choice of word(s).

That is disturbing odd that they would call it a poultice when it is clearly imbibed. Image IPB

Yeah, if you've ever played neverwinter nights, I tend to roleplay bandage use in that game as applying poultices. Both potions and poultices are derived from herbal concoctions, but as mentioned, they are distinctly different in their application.

It seems like a bit of a flub, but I'm not going to boycott the game over it. :P

Animator: "Is that like a potion?"
Boss: "Sure why not."

This actually bothers me now. Bugger... Ah well, it won't bother me as much as the huuuge weapons called daggers, or the gigantic hands of Fereldens inhabitants.
The game will be fantastically great anyway. :D

Well, this one, if true, is kind of embarrassing. They went through the trouble of having something else instead of "small health potions" and then not only do they look exactly the same, it's in direct contradiction with the new word.

It's like getting a skin lotion, and then drinking it.

It might not kill you (atleast not quickly), depending on what's in the lotion it might even be good for you (though unlikely), but you surely are not using it as intended.

Have to agree with some of the other posters. Not complaining, but if this is in the final version I am suffering a bit of second-hand embarrassment for whoever is responsible. Image IPB

I blame the animations. If they actually tried to animate the application of poultices, you'd have players wondering why their character was putting it on their left arm when it was their right leg that got cut. Or maybe, given the premium on zots for animations in general, they just would have ended up using the unarmed attack animation instead.

That would've been neat.

"A little help here, please..."

"Hang on, dearie, let me see if I've got a poultice for that... Ah, here we are. BE HEALED!" *PC receives a slap upside the head from Wynne with a cranium-rattling *splat!**

"Feeling better?"

"A little woozy, now that you mention it..."

"Another poultice should clear that right up."

"NO!! I'm fine!! Really!"

I think I'll just assume that every time I read "poultice" in the descriptions, they really meant to say "potion" instead. Simple typo. Yeah. That's it.
