I second this. FemShep is a woman. However, the way she is right now in ME2 is basically female skin over a male skeleton and it's AWKWARD. No one's asking to sex her up. What I think most people seem to want is for her gender to be embraced and portrayed realistically in terms of the physical and behavior (tone it down with the overemphasis and deep intonation in her conversations). She wasn't like this in ME1. Honestly, just compare her wonderful "Say goodnight, Manuel" line to every other renegade option in ME2. It's almost like in the latter she's overcompensating for something.KBomb wrote...
Well, I can’t really speak for the ones who want her to change her mannerisms. I don’t mind her knuckle popping, or punching people. I do think the way she sat, or the way she walked (especially) needs to be modeled after an actual female. Her animations are the same as Shepard’s and I don’t believe that was done to give her more edge, it was done as an oversight or as crimsontearz said (sorry if I spelled his name wrong). Had she always walked that way, that would be different. I wouldn’t even say she walked like a man in ME2--her walk was just…broke. It needs to be modeled after a female not because she needs “womaning up”, it needs to be modeled after a female because well, that’s what she is.
Female Shepard and masculine traits.

I guess this one in a way depends on how you look at it, too. Female Shepard and male Shepard walked like each other both in ME and ME2. So it's not like female Shepard is the only one who walks different out of sudden in the sequel, the male Shepard does, too. And yes that walk (especially, the run to lesser degree) is pretty odd, they seem to be limping a bit. But maybe that's deliberate to reflect that the character was rebuilt from scratch or something, i don't know.
Also, since in a sense female Shepard's walk was never "modeled after a female" i don't feel a burning need that's something that has to change for the next game. Yes, she's a female but apparently a one with peculiar manner of walking. Whether that's because she has atypical bone structure or for any other reason... that doesn't really matter; she's the way she is.
(mainly hesitant of the potential Ashley effect that i'd fully expect as result of such tweaks)
I wouldn’t want her to have a runway model sashay. I would just be happy with a normal walk. I viewed the walk from both male and female Shepard in ME1 to be a normal stride. Then in ME2, I was left a little stunned by it. I just think modeling it after a woman would give it a softer gait. She can be soft, too. Anyone watching her with Thane would know that--or the way she handled the slave who ran away in ME1 if you have the colonist background (which was one of the most touching scenes in the game, imo). I think FemShep is awesome because she can be both feminine and an elite soldier, we saw this in ME1, she doesn’t have to be one or the other. And I guess I pay more attention to her walk than MaleShep because I play femShep way more.

So OP, you don't see human, you see a man or a woman. I'm a woman, and your writing made me angry, thanks for that. I did only one playthrough as a fem-Shep, and I'm damn happy she was not a damsell in distress. If male-Shep takes a leak when standing, I want fem-Shep do the same without sitting. You have an image in your head how women should be, and you want the world to fit in it. Be glad you haven't met me.

The game tends to focus on more of what Shep has done as a serviceman/Spectre, not on Shep as a person. Yes, Shep the person reflects on how s/he acts as a serviceman/Spectre but I would think there's more to Shep than a basic background like spacer or earthborn. What kind of music does Shep like? Does Shep like certain movies? Does Shep give to a favorite charity? What's Sheps favorite food? Is femshep obcessed with shoes? Would Shep get a tattoo? What's Sheps religion.. if any or his/her politics? There can be a lot more to Shep than do I or do I not shoot this person?

In ME2 the conversations with Jacob use a female motion capture I reckon, but I think all other cutscenes are male. Still, it sounds like ME3 might improve things.

With hilariously horrific consequences if you use the dress from Kasumi's mission.

In my opinion, FemShep is fine as is. She just needs her animation rig from ME1 back. And desperately so.

Nice to hear from Casey that there's more attention to the anims. I've also noticed after finishing the main campaign and completing the suicide mission/collector base, that if you speak to Jacob, Femshep is using a far more relaxed voice and I don't think she's smiling that smirk, she's still leaning though but you don't get that "I want you bad" vibe.

Of course thats the last thing anyone wants, but theres no getting around theres an issue that many people have notice and want addressed. Its all about balance, at the leasr she needs some polish on her movement rig. Casey has tweeted they are working on animations so its up to Bioware now to get it right for her.
Anyway this was a really good reply from cloned in reply to my post earlier in the thread.

thats because its not gender neutral. femshep is just using male motion capture animations. hence the clipping issues.
you can't have gender neutral motion capture because gender neutral isnt real. theres going to be a male or female in the mocap suit for the animations. the default for shepard is male so they've stuck with that so far. having motion capture for both male and female shepards and having them use motion capture done by a male and a female would not only solve the issues but make the preformances more believable.
doesnt even have to be entirely different in how the do an animation, the subtle differences between having a male and female would make every animation look better and more realistic. i honestly dont know why anyone would be against this. i play male shep so i dont have any animation issues. a big reason why i dont play femshep is because of her off looking animations that are obviously done by a male. its immersion breaking for me.
just have a male and a female do the same things in motion capture suits. it'd look 100 times better.
but i guess people hate this because it acknowledges that males and females are different? i dunno. this whole thing is silly.

Think Vasquez in "Aliens". She's a combat veteran. Yes, they butched her up. I don't think the knuckle cracking is right. See that's bluff and bluster giving someone a chance. A woman warrior doesn't bluff -- she's out for blood.
Everybody bluffs at some point and everybody's direct at other times. IMHO and experience.
Someone said:

I sincerely don't hope they hate it.
Well there's over six billion people that are all different and in this context move/act in over six billion different ways.
It seems to me that narrowing it down to both a female and male motion capture is just the best thing one can do to cater as many people as possible.
* Make it moddable to match femshep to male animation and vice versa. Problem semi solved. Though you have to accept weird anomalies.

Female Shepard is pretty much the first female action hero that actually feels believable to me. There have been plenty strong female characters in various films/tv, but as far as physicality goes, the only other female character I can think of who didn't punch like Buffy/a Spice Girl was Hilary Swank in Million Dollar Baby. To me, shepard has believable physicality, gravity, strength, power, intelligence, diplomacy, charisma, etc. - all the qualities you would want from a leader who's also a soldier on the front lines. I like that her gender doesn't come into that, and that she doesn't have to conform to societal norms for how a female should behave.
I find it laughable that some people actually think that FemShep's body language should conform to feminine standards in order to not conform to a male oriented society. If anything, that perpetuates pressure to conform to gender roles.
