Female Shepard and masculine traits.

I like FemShep the way that she is. Her animations can seem awkward at times but I can relate because I often sit like that or have similar gestures. She just comes off like a woman who grew up without being forced in a particular direction gender-wise and developed her own mannerisms.

ME2 animations actually looked alright to me because of that. Maybe Hale was sometimes trying *too* much with the voice, but in general FemShep is fine as she is.
That said, this petitions for different animations worry me a bit. While ME1 female animations were OK, I was not fond of FemHawke's wiggling, not fond at all. I just hope they don't go overboard with this.

As to the rest, femshep doesn't need to wiggle, and I dare say she does not need to be more feminine. What she does need is to not be an exact copy of maleShep.

I have no problem with this but it seems that if you play both Male and Female Shep they both act the same, I agree FShep should have her own unique mannerisms and at times FShep seemed to be more tough acting than male Shep. The mannerisms and actions just didn't seem natural to me when playing a FShep. Maybe its just that I've never seen a female act or talk the way FShep does or maybe because I'm a male I have preconceived notions on what a female should be like and I'm not being very realistic, lol.

What is it with this ridiculous idea that a woman who doesn't show some soft side every now and then must be trying to sound tough, as opposed to simply being tough? Especially when it's character the player guided through two games already, it should be more than obvious at this point Shepard isn't pretending anything and she has all the actual toughness to back up her behaviour.bigSarg wrote...
There were parts in the game where FShep sounded like Clint Eastwood, I totally hated that, trying to hard to sound tough

what i hope they change is how femshep walks in casual clothing... I mean there are plenty of other games where the woman is tough but walks like a lady
Personally, I think that's an issue with both Sheps; that walk looks just as odd on casual maleshep too (looks great on both male and female Shep with armor). I think they should still share the same animation for walking/running, but, indeed, it would be nice if there was a seperate walk animation for casuals (i.e. without the load of invisible armour) .

I love that femshep is relatively masculine. It's not over-the-top at all, and I think the voice acting strikes the perfect balance. And I actually liked that the female's animations are shared with the male's. I think it was a good idea. The only problem was when she sat in a dress . As for her walking/running animations, I think they were perfectly fine when she was in armor, but they should change those for BOTH male and females when they're not wearing armor - otherwise, keep it as is, please.
Female Shepard is pretty much the first female action hero that actually feels believable to me. There have been plenty strong female characters in various films/tv, but as far as physicality goes, the only other female character I can think of who didn't punch like Buffy/a Spice Girl was Hilary Swank in Million Dollar Baby. To me, shepard has believable physicality, gravity, strength, power, intelligence, diplomacy, charisma, etc. - all the qualities you would want from a leader who's also a soldier on the front lines. I like that her gender doesn't come into that, and that she doesn't have to conform to societal norms for how a female should behave.
I find it laughable that some people actually think that FemShep's body language should conform to feminine standards in order to not conform to a male oriented society. If anything, that perpetuates pressure to conform to gender roles.
Excellent post.

I'm not complaining, but I get a laugh when I talk to Garrus with a Femshep wearing a dress and she sits down in a squat position. xp
I'm rather surprised to hear so many people have femShep running around in a dress.
Mine took it off right after the mission and never wore it again. My Shepard was a pretty no-nonsense space marine who was focused on saving the galaxy. Not a princess getting dolled up to sit on the ship between missions.

Another excellent post. But according to the thread premise I'm sad to say that you are indeed "butch" and need to change immediately to make these people more comfortable.

I actually like that she's a repaint of male Shepard. I think people need to understand that male and female Shepard are the same person. They're not a whole different person with different thoughts and experiences depending on their gender. It is Commander Shepard and they carry them self a certain way regardless of gender.
How else do you explain this?

Looking back on it, I think a better word in my original post would have been "If she's too equal". I agree with you though. And if she's a marine, you can expect that she's going to be tough anyway.

I see what your saying and I understand, I apologize if my post offended you, I'm not trying to start an arguement or disrespect anyones opinion, I do agree that FShep has proven that she is as tough as she sounds, I guess I just wasn't happy with the tone or maybe even the voice-over. But Thats just my personal preference, if they use the same tone and voice-over in ME3 I will still enjoy the game.

My Femshep wears it only when appropriate so far there's only been 2 times: Kasumi job of course, as Morinth bait (and the fighting sequence in that was awesome!), and the third time will be when Liara comes over.
I was very pleased that the option for that dress was there to be honest. I like the idea that Femshep is an all around woman as well as an all around badass. She doesn't need to wear slacks all the time to be tough does she? I will agree it doesn't make sense for someone practical like Shep to wear the dress on the Normandy while serving as Captain though, I wouldn't even do that..

That's exactly what I did. It's all about the roleplaying
I did accidentally still have it on while initiating Arrival, though, so the Admiral got a bit of an eyeful at the end of the mission

This. All the complains about how "no woman would sit like that (in a dress)" have now made me worried that she'll sit like a dainty princess in ME3.
So unless the game recognizes when she's wearing a dress in ME3 (if she even has the option, I'm all for options though) and changes the animation accordingly (feasible? probably not), I really want them to keep it the way it is. Or even better, how it was in ME1, which I think was pretty much spot on.
Having said that, I'm cautiously optimistic about female Shepard getting her own animations... clipping issues need to go, but everyone has their own opinion on what's "feminine", and it can get way exaggerated easily. *cough*DA2*cough* (I actually found the over-the-top girly idle animations kinda hilarious, especially on my warrior Hawke, but the running/walking just looked painful.)
But yeah, just my two cents as another female gamer. I guess I just like FemShep a bit masculine in that regard.

There's already a better sitting animation in Shadow Broker, there was a pic floating around but I can't find it now. She's sitting with closed legs and hands a litte bit under her legs. She's not crossing them or anything 'lady like'.
