Open Tray Error, any relief?

Yes, I have the open tray error (XBox 360 circa 2006'ish).  DIsc 1 works fine, no issues whatsoever.  When I got to the missions that take you to Illium (help Jacob, help Miranda, etc.) it asks me to insert Disc 2.  And fail...

I've read a LOT online about the open-tray error.  Is there any relief for this problem?
- Both discs are in perfect shape, not a scratch or blemish anywhere
- Drive is clean, no dust/contamination

I even purchased a 250GB hard drive, transferred everything over from the old drive, and tried installing the game.
- I installed Disc 1, worked great
- I tried to play the game and it still asked me to insert Disc 2.  Fail again...

Need some help here.  It's been 1+ year since release of the game, so I doubt the companies/manufacturers care to solve this.  And I'm POSITIVE it won't hurt future sales.  Looking for something I can do on my own to fix this.  Being stuck in the middle of a game is just terrible, I didn't pay $100 just to get an unusable set of discs.  Thanks in advance!

Either your disc or 360 is bad. Those are your two options.
Disc bad--contact EA.com Support--live chat and talk to them about the issue.
360 bad--contact microsoft support and see if they can do anything.

Personally I would start with EA, it will probably be quicker, and they are the official support of the game.

Hmm... 360 plays everything else perfectly. I highly doubt it's the machine.

Quick question about the "install game" feature: in order to play the game, do I have to install both discs? I installed Disc 1 just find and it said "installation complete." When I went to play it from the spot I saved it at (on the way to Illium), it said insert disc 2. Does the game just need to validate you have an official disc, or is it looking for the content from disc 2? If I were somehow able to install both discs completely, would the game be playable all the time from the hard drive?

Thanks again.

Even if you install both discs you'll still have to swap discs. It's a security measure that Microsoft isn't going to give up. (I thought it odd you only installed one but not the other.) Try that first to see if that helps, but seeing that you've claimed to have researched this a fair bit I know I won't be able to suggest anything to you.

I too had this and managed to fix the problem by uninstalling and re-installing all the ME2 DLC. I guess some of it was corrupt or something, try that and see if it works.

How would one go about doing this and not fully deleting it (forever)?  I'm afraid of getting rid of it and then not being able to get it back (without paying for it again).  Thanks in advance.

Luckily Xbox Live keeps track of all the content you download. So you can just go into your hardrive, delete all of the DLC then re-download it for free. Hope this helps.

I appreciate the help/suggestions. I doubt the XBox Live DLC has anything to do with this though. When loading the disc from the main screen, it fails to read the disc just about every other time I try it. This seems to be a disc/hardware compatibility thing... Unless there's another explanation for why DLC would affect the initial disc-read?

The way to eliminate the possibility of the dlc somehow effecting the disc being read would be to remove your hard drive and try to play from disc. This should be 'easily' done if the disc can't be read from the menu screen and wouldn't take very long (assuming you can remove your HD).

I don't see any harm in redownloading the dlcs again as someone else suggested seeing that they claimed that it solved their disc reading issue (assuming their issue is much like yours of course).

I've tried all the solutions posted (thank you all again), and nothing has corrected the issue. I'll try EA Live Support next, but I doubt they'll swap a game-disc for me to try out... any suggestion on interactions with them?

In the UK at least there is a disc swap available, though I think that is only available for 90 days after initial purchase. Not knowing where in the world you are I would suggest checking your manual to see if EA offer that service.

I've read that problems get solved quickly with EA's live chat feature, more so than the standard email anyway. Good luck.

It's well after 90 days from original purchase. Not sure what they can do about that...

On a side note: if I were to buy a copy of the normal game and get Disc 2 to install, would it be possible to use the 'standard' game disc in place of the Collector's Edition?

On a 2nd side note: is this problem found mostly with the original XBox360? Or have the newer 'slim' users reported the same issue?

In the UK the replacement disc offer is available for a fee of £10 last time I checked; but again I would suggest checking your manual to see whether this is applicable to your region.

A normal edition disc will work, as the Collectors Edition bonuses are tied up with the redemption code and accounts and whatnot; the games are the same as I understand it (though you may wish confirmation on that point).

My gut feeling is there are certain problems with the Slim (the initial release of the Dragon Age: Origins 1.04 patch being an example) though I don't think the issue is limited to the original model (at least there has been no concrete data on the forums to suggest this is the case). Besides, I game on a Falcon 360 (if you know what that is) and haven't had any issues as yet; none that I consider serious anyway.

If your disc is possibly defective, causing the issues you are describing, there is a Warranty/Replacement process. Here's the link for North America/UK:
http://support.ea.co.../detail/a_id/34
As ObakaSama mentioned, there is a slight cost if you are out of the 90 day Limited Warranty period, and of course, check your manual if you are in a different region to ensure the process goes through quickly and efficiently.

Thanks for the Warranty info. The replacement cost is $20 via EA. However, I found copies of ME2 on Amazon.com for ~$15 including shipping. Those items even come with 30 day warranties from their sellers. I may just go that route...

Makes more financial sense as well. Plus you don't really need to get a new copy as well....

As a final 'suggestion' though I will ask whether you have exhausted the possibilities before using more money to buy another copy of the game; no sense in spending more than you need to after all.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck.

Update: the new copy of the standard edition disc 2 works perfectly. That means the collector's edition disc 2 is hosed. Makes me want to get it replaced just so that I have a fully-working copy of the collector's edition!
