I talked with the rogue chick and went down the "Are bards spies" chatline
and then talked to her about whether she could teach me to become a
bard. She then said that probably not (I am warrior) but that she could
give me pointers for someone else. I then got this big symbol appearing
in the middle saying something like "Bard unlocked" or
somesuch. I later did some poor choices and started from a save. I did
the same discussions however the symbol did not appear anymore in the
middle of the screen after "pointers lecture".... so is the bard
unlocked or not? Is there a log somewhere where I can verify this?

Its unlocked. Once you get it, its there for good.
