Thane and Mordin, in all of my playthroughs, have been recriut and LM. Aside from the upgrade dialog, that's about the limits. There's just no interest what so ever.
What would you say the average fan ranking is for Thane Krios?

Meh. Willful nihilism, mostly: I find it analogous (though not directly) to the sort of reasoning by those who believe since women give birth, they have some symbollic moral superiority/power that men lack as creators of life.Fiery Phoenix wrote...
You gotta admit it, though: his dialogue for failing the loyalty mission is extremely well written.TheCrakFox wrote...
I think he's pretty interesting, but my god is he a depressing bastard if you fail his loyalty mission.
He's in a funk, and so he willfully lays out a state of mind to keep him there. Sad, but not tragic.
As for Thane in general, I'm one of those people who has a 'meh'. He was so unrelated to the plot that I'd as soon not recruit him if it weren't for the tech upgrades. Even Zaeed can claim more plot relevance via his connection to the Blue Suns, and they're only tangental. Thane is pretty much women's eye candy in role and purpose, and that's not my thing.
Now, I will freely admit that had they kept the M/M romance, I would have been a bit more curious about him in general... but they didn't.

Ahem. As to Thane, I like him, but think it's a shame he's so extraneous to the plot. It would have been nice if there'd been a sniper role to the suicide mission (to be fulfilled by either Thane or Garrus), or if he'd had some kind of more personal stake in the mission in general. I didn't really understand why he was there.

Personally? Won't really say. Can I appreciate it in a character? Yes.CaptainZaysh wrote...

For some characters, orientation is just a note. For others, it's an important facet of their identity. Zevran's bisexuality in Dragon Age, for example, while not charming to me personally, was a key part of his character.
Thane just seems a bit too... conventional, in the current straight-only romance. That's not bad, but it isn't something else. I just remember hearing the few clips of the cut romance-dialogue, particularly Shepard's opening, and I remember thinking 'damn, they shouldn't have cut that.'

He seems to be one of those characters that few people dislike, but few people shout their love for him either. He's not doing badly for fans though.
He's fairly interesting to talk to, if a little cold/distant/whatever. Similar to Samara in some ways, but he doesn't seem as friendly as her, and a little smug sometimes. And a poor parent. I don't have a strong opinion one way or the other about him. The only thing I don't like about him is his voice. It's just so throaty.

Thane seems to be a consistent middle-of-the-road character in the fanbase. He rarely seems to stir up a rabid following, be they haters or not.
For me, Thane is definitely one of my least-liked characters, primarily because of his writing and, well, character. But I certainly don't feel compelled to splash it all over the forums. I'd rather focus my attention on the characters I do care about (Garrus, Legion, Mordin, Grunt and Wrex, Ashley...er...so many others).

If I were to rank the squad members, I think Thane would end up near the bottom. Jacob being the bottom one though. I don`t really have anything against Thane...Something about him just puts me off, thats all.

My squadmates ranking:
Tier 1: All time favorites
Wrex, Mordin, Garrus
Tier 2: Not enough of them to be in T1
Tali, Legion, Thane
Tier 3: Well written and played, but underdeveloped
Zaeed, Samara, Kaidan, Miranda (I don;t care about a virtual ass)
Tier 4: Well, they exist / don't like
Jacob, Jack, Grunt, Ashley
Tier 5: More of a gimmick than a character
Morinth, Kasumi
Blue Mary-Sue I Don't Buy It But Devs Push It Down My Throat Tier:
Liara
So, he is pretty high, and he is not a Tier 1 squadmate, because Garrus is an old buddy and he callibrates my barrels. Also, I support the opinion, that much of the Miranda's popularity is due to the ass shots, which I found somewhat awkward and laughable.
Thane has a decent backstory, excellent lines, cool voice-effects, and looks great. If he wasn't terminally ill, he could be more popular, since at the moment some fans just don't see the point in thinking about him ME3-wise.

Thane is a solid character but I think his some what detached personality makes it difficult for some people to really like him a great deal. To me he rates some were in the middle while I do like him I just prefer others. I think the determining factor for me will be how he's treated in me3 if he somehow gets a miracle cure I think I would like him a lot less.

I don't like him, because he got hyped up a lot during marketing and he ended up nothing like they've pictured him.
Samara was closer to that image.

He was meh, he started off as a showoff in his intro but shepard could do the same thing rofl and then "BWAHHHH IM DYING but in not in this game", which was rectified by the suicide mission. Atleast he was a fitting candidate for it, he was a goner anyway.

He follows the trope of the mellow and supposedly badass emo hero who goes between the line of good and evil like some self righteous manga protagonist. That kind of character gets annoying when it's rehashed several dozen times over in different games and movies. All he really does is feed the nipophiliac fanbase of ME.

I'm a big Thane fan and rank him as favourite LI. My sheps have only ever romanced Kaiden or Thane (I really don't like either Liara or Jacob). Mordin would be my favourite non LI characters.
Maybe the character of Thane does appeal more to the older player (I'm very much on the wrong side of 30

He was neither here nor there. I like him but he definitely did not stand out as a character. He did get a little annoying after awhile though.
But to each their own.

I'll contribute, since I'm one of the lurking fans. All and all he seems to be decently popular, I do really like him both as a character and a LI (tied with Garrus for favorite). As a LI, I just liked how he felt like Shepard's mature equal from the get-go, he certainly suited the Shepard that I romanced him with. Hearing about how he was "designed for the ladies" (I think that was mainly about his looks though I'm not sure), and the dead-wife-estranged-son thing, I actually expected to like him less than I did, but it didn't bother me in the end. You could blame Kaidan for the same thing, he's pretty clearly also designed to appeal to women, but again I like him just fine regardless... (I prefer Ashley, but then I might just be Chris L'Etoile -biased since I also love Legion and duh, Thane.
)
Like all the LIs Thane suffers from the 'no romance, no talking' problem which is a pity. And the unfortunately paraphrased line for starting the romance (though now that I know the reason behind it, there wasn't much they could've done at the time). Just, really hoping that Thane (along with the other ME2 LIs, if not the rest) gets some decent screentime and a satisfactory storyline in ME3 too... so this whole "in depth character development" doesn't just concern the ME1 folk.
