Real firefight? - Grunt and Garrus. One short range, one long.
Which two squad members would you want to have your back in a real firefight?

Liara for biotics and Wrex for the win!

If we are talking about IRL then it's really an opinion on tactics. In real combat, plans must evolve or go out the window, so success depends on adaptability, understanding and commitment to procedure and communication in regards to mutual effort and determination, perception and skill as an individual (aside from strength, speed and stamina).
Wrex, Grunt, Jack, Liara, Zaeed, Kasumi, Samara/Morinth and Thane are all solo operatives, with mindsets not suited to a team even though they are capable in their own right.
Tali would be a good team member but is vulnerable through her suit and that would lead to an extra level of complication in the field (not good).
Legion, even though he is used to working on his own, would follow orders to the letter and that level of reliability is outstandingly useful. As a bonus it has the potential to be rebuilt and made active following massive trauma, probably faster than an organic.
Ashley, Kaidan, Garrus, Mordin, Jacob and Miranda are all team players of fairly equal merit.
As a balance between effectiveness and reliability I'd go with:
Kaidan - Offensive Biotics and Team Medic
and
Garrus - Broad Experience (Military and Police)
Should Garrus' DNA lead to a complication regarding first aid or food supplies then I would replace him with:
Jacob - Decisive Soldier Mentality
or
Legion - Exceptional Specialist Knowledge and Reliability.
Cutting to the chase. Kaidan and Legion.

This is a tough one really, I have 3 in mind but what it really comes down to is both power and combat experience, and there are 2 squaddies who have such an insurmountable pile of battle experience (and kick-ass biotic power) that it's just a no-brainer. Wrex and Samara. My 3rd choice is Garrus, cuz he's just awesome, but he just doesn't have the power and experience that the other 2 do.

Id have Liara and Miranda on my team seeing as two biotics are better then one. In some case not so much but for me it is.

Thane and Legion. There really wouldn't be any "real" firefights per se, just us three picking everyone off from a distance with our snipers. I might sub Legion for Kasumi though, because her shadow strike ability could be a huge asset in either distracting enemies or picking them off silently.

I'm either an Adept/Sentinel/Vanguard so for me it would be Garrus and Wrex/Liara. I love the use of redundant biotics in my fights.

Garrus and Jack, Garrus because i can trust him to actually watch my back, and jack because she would just destroy whatevert was in her way

Samara and Wrex. Both are biotics (Samara at pretty much matriarch level). I could hide behind Wrex, or he could charge at them and grab all the attention. Meanwhile Samara is all about protecting people, so I'm pretty sure she wouldn't let me die.
While they're doing that, I'll hide at the back, throwing stones at the enemies and hoping I don't die. 'Cause we're being realistic, right?

Miranda and Miranda! Dang, I can't do that!!
Seriously, if two female squadmates, Miranda and Ashley. If male and female - Miranda and Garrus!

Does Shepard count? Since... you know... s/he IS part of the squad...
If Shepard counts I'd bring male Shepard and female Shepard, and then kick back and watch the ass whooping unfold.
If I can't choose Shepard then I would probably pick Garrus and Wrex, since they were my go to team in ME1.
My next choice would be Legion, because I don't think it would ever miss in real life... being a machine and all...
After that Samara, just because of how crazy powerful her biotics are.

Wrex and Grunt just because they are Krogan and this is a firefight so there is no time for stealth.

Garrus and Jacob, for their experience, professionalism and loyalty, though Jacob would have to lose the shotgun and gain an assault rifle because shotguns are useless in a firefight. Thane would also be a good choice, as would Ashley and Kaidan.
In a real firefight I think most of the ME squadmates wouldn't be suitable.

My decision would be based on my class. I play Soldier, Adept, Infiltrator, and Vanguard. My default class is soldier; my second choice is Adept. So here are my "real life" choices:
ME and ME2 Soldier: Liara and Tali
ME and ME2 Adept: Ash and Tali
I found that a soldier (Shep)/adept/engineer, or adept (Shep)/soldier/engineer, simply obliterated foes. Of course their effectiveness would be based on their builds. Plus, by ME2 we know both Liara and Tali have deep feelings for Shepard, whether or not they end up as the LI, and Ash is a loyal troop regardless of her feelings.
Alternative squad for both classes: Garrus and Miranda.

I'm surprised Samara hasn't been mentioned very much. She can carry a Mattock and is the strongest biotic we meet. She stopped a car with her mind.
I would probably amend my first squad (Kaidan+Liara -- ME1 Lift baby).. Drop Kaidan for Samara.
