So I recently got Mass Effect 1 & 2. After completing the story in ME 1 I imported my save file into ME 2.

In ME 1 I decided to save Ashley Willams on Virmire, but then in ME 2 whilst I was on the shuttle with Miranda and Jacob on the way to see the Illusive Man at the start of the game and they were asking a couple of questions, it mentioned that I had saved Kaiden on Virmire and that I had left Ashley to die...

Is it meant to be like this? If not is there a way to solve this problem?

Save game corruption. You can fix it using the Gibbed's save game editor, available here;

Edit: There is also a known bug with the ME1 save game, where it ticks both renegade and paragon flags for how you dealt with conrad verner. you can use the editor to fix that as well.
