"Ardat-Yakshi are a disgrace to the asari culture. It is suspected that this condition is what lies at the root of the asari prejudice against purebloods. Samara, a pureblood herself, states that the condition is as old as the asari species, and that it appears only in the daughters of purebloods."

knowing our lovely Blueberry is also a Pureblood and according Samara's words... do you really wanna have "lots ob blue babies"?? since this could be the trigger of having AY descendants for Shepard and Liara...

As TMA said above, it's when mating occurs between two pureblood asari. And even then I think it's quite rare for the condition to appear. Which is why unions between asari are frowned upon, but not actively discouraged. It's become their social stigma, and the real world equivalents here we need not delve into.

Samara still loves her kids.

Besides, I think it's just Asari/Asari that causes it. Not the actual person.

haha I didn't said she don't love her kids;);) just sharing some info to tease the blue babies followers of this thread:devil::devil: and also knowing their opinion concerning this.

Honestly I don't remember if it is said in the games or the codex if the AY syndrome appears on Asari/Asari mating, or it only needs a Pureblood having kids, according Samara's words, regardless the other species. I also don't remember if it's know if Samara's bondmate (Morinth, Falere and Rila's father) is an asari or not. If someone knows this info please tell me since I'm interested on it

Edit1: Lizard, I share your confusion, IDK if we need Asari/Asari mating or Asari Pureblood with any other species. Liara having a AY carrier? well what I meant is that she has more possibilities to have AY daughters thanks to her pureblood condition:D (always according Samara's words, of course)

Edit2: Kil, is confirmed (ingame, codex, whatever it is) the "it occurs beetween 2 pureblood asari mating"?? that's where all started haha, in my doubts after reading that, and also not knowing if Samara had Morinth and the others with another Asari or another species

As far as I understand, if Liara is not an Ardat-Yakshi, and she'll make children with Shepard/a member of another race with the exception of the Asari, there is no risk of having an Ardat-Yakshi. If she has a children with another Asari (though I don't know if she has to be a pureblood), there's a risk that the child is an Ardat-Yakshi.

The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin has something similar..though they go through reproductions cycles for a few days each month where they turn into either 'male' or 'female'....so one cycle you could be the man, the next cycle, the woman.  So, just like the asari, you could be a mother and a father to two different children.

Yeah, definitely not a new concept.

An episode of the show Enterprise featured a genetically engineered monogendered race used as a means of slave labor and as living incubators to carry the fetus of a child to full term for the aliens that created them. They were androgynous, which is how the asari really should have been portrayed if you go by the codex' explination of their species.

Now, I'm not complaining about a race of "blue beauties"...but scientifically the codex and in-game models basically are incompatible.

As far as I understood. A pureblood asari has a chance of carrying the AY gene, but not actually be an AY (as is Samara's case).

Now here is the confusion. We do not know if the AY gene carrier has to have a child with another asari, or if an AY can be produced with any mate. As far as I know, it is the former.

And frankly. What are the odds of Liara being an AY gene carrier?

Didn´t Samara say something like it´s only purebloods who can be AY?? And if the mother is pureblood too, the risk of the child being a fullblown AY heightens.
I think you can compare it, to some extent, with genetic "flaws" becoming more prevalent due to inbreeding.

Yes, I also went with Liara´s explanation of the asari´s gender than the codex. Because before the asari met other bi/poly-gendered species, I´m pretty sure they didn´t have any concept of different genders. And just because they look females (at least to humans) it doesn´t mean that they are.

I just remak in bold what confuses me. Samara said that, and as far as I understand her words, that means pureblood daughters are the only one capables of being Ardat-Yakshi. What I don't know (and what you understand) is if it's necessary an Asari/Asari pairing to have AY or it isn't :) I guess if we know who was Samara's mate we'll know the answer, since her 3 daughters were AY and Samara is a Pureblood.

@Devil: Look at what I marked in bold, is the same you said, "only pureblood daughters are AY", and Liara is Pureblood too, that's why I ask all this:)

Yes, it's been stated that a union between two asari's can produce an Ardat-Yakshi offspring.

Edit: I'll make this clearer. Because the child comes from 2 Asari, he'll be pureblood, thus the possibility for the child to be an Ardat-Yakshi.

Edit2: Rectification. Both parents need to be pureblood. *cough* My bad.

Samara says AY are the product of the union between two asari, purebloods.

Ardat-Yakshi are a disgrace to the asari culture. It is suspected that
this condition is what lies at the root of the asari prejudice against purebloods.
Samara, a pureblood herself, states that the condition is as old as the
asari species, and that it appears only in the daughters of purebloods.

The implication I got from some of the Asari commando in the hospital's dialogue was that they can in fact detect if some is carrying the Ardat-Yakshi gene, and will avoid having relationships with other Asari if they do.

Why not? presumably a monogendered mammal-like species still needs to breastfeed their young, so they would have brests, and still need to give birth, so they would have a body shape similar to a human woman, im no scientist thoug so maybe im missing something.

I remember reading the codex and yeah that makes sense, only two asari pureblood mating create AY so no concerns for Shep/Liara B)

It appears only in the daughters of purebloods. - wiki
So, an Asari, even if she's a pureblood, mating with someone from another species, won't risk of giving birth to a soon to be Ardat-Yakshi. I think I remember that from the game, but nevertheless, this is the truth! Hear! Hear!

I think you can look at like this: AY are always a pureblood, while not all purebloods are AY. Again, the codex are being pretty vague about this but that is how I view it anyway.
So, eventhough Liara is a pureblood the risk of having AY children is probably quite low since she most likely will have them with Shepard, a human. And don´t forget that only 1% of the asari population is belongs in the AY spectrum (this implies that there are different "degrees" of the syndrome, kinda like with Autism, which indicates that Morinth and her sisters probably suffer from the worst type of it).

And as I provided the quote earlier, AY are the product of pureblood unions, hence the stigma.

It was probably more prevalent, but according to the description of one of the asari planets in ME3 the asari have always been extremely exogamous, f.ex: leaving the community they were born in to join another, perhaps far away, to avoid inbreeding.
