the Ye Gods post from who knows how many pages back, reminded me of JarJar "Ye Gods whatta meesa saying"  and based on all the star wars/trek references thrown around here i just assumed.  It's ok I've noticed that we all like the classics and Antiquity over here. and I guess the Aethyta leaving on her own free will thing makes a little sense although i still don't see how it would have been better for Liara.

Oh, youse'a talkin about that? I feel sorry for the wacky alien, he's the most reviled character of Star Wars, for being comic relief. Can't get harsher than that.

But I suppose Aethyta leaving would give Liara with a relatively stable childhood. Two wildly different life philosphies can be very confusing for a child.. That's my theory anyway. I don't think Benezia and Aethyta would argue as such, but with one who believes in being direct, and the other, indirect, Liara would struggle to follow one or the other...

edit : I support Liara's favourite dig site! *ahem*

That's being a bit unfair on Benezia, isn't it? Like I said, it could be that Aethyta was looking to protect Liara from herself(Aethyta), and thus agreed to separate from Benezia. If Benezia really did cut Aethyta off like that, would they really have kept in contact in the manner which Aethyta suggests? It seems Aethyta had more of a say in Liara's upbringing than she let on, it's just that she wasn't a prominent figure in Liara's life is all.

Anyway, Aethyta admits later on that she takes on the crap bar jobs to keep tabs on Liara. So, laughing the blue off her ass may have been an exagerration. I just don't buy Aethyta's story wholesale, and as Joker said waaaaaaaay back, you shouldn't believe the official story.

It may be a bit unfair to Benezia but it is only one scenario and judging by what we've heard it was Benezia who kept the truth from Liara for 106 years and it was Benezia who left Aethyta. So it's not outside the realm of possibility that Aethyta might have become more outspoken with her beliefs or had a physical confrontation since Aethyta prefers to fight rather than talk and did something that brought a lot of embarrassment on herself that was the final straw for Benezia and she left before Liara was born so that Liara was not exposed to her influence. She could have still kept in contact with Aethyta and kept her in the loop on her daughter but not allowed Aethyta in her life.

I just find it hard to believe to that Aethyta would consider herself a bad influence for one child and not another so I can't see her making a choice to not be in Liara's life, but I could see her going along with Benezia deciding that something she had done would make her bad influence because Aethyta seems to have valued Benezia's opinion's because of how she felt about her and because she deemed Benezia smarter than herself about the important things (except for the whole Saren business). I picked up a hint of this from her conversation with Shepard and Liara in ME3.

I think I mentioned that in my own discussion a little while back. Everything is rather ambiguous but I'm inclined to go with the information provided on A-Y as the best estimate given the nature of it.

Okay, I'm heading off to London tomorrow, so... I'll just order everyone to stop posting for a week now, so I won't have a bunch of pages to go through when I get back.

Everyone okay with that?

Good.

Well, if against all odds you don't obey my commands, I suppose there are worse things to have to go through than a whole lot of Liara talk/pics.

Still going to miss all too many discussions...

I know this is off current topic but I was not able to post during the last debate. The thread moves so fast sometimes it's near impossible to get a post in before an issue is two or three topics into the past.

A note on Asari Maturity. The best source of estimating the age of sexual maturity for the Asari is via Ardat-Yakshi lore.

I know this is drumming up a contested subject that has been discussed many times before but this is the answer I came up with via research.

It is mentioned at least once by Samara and hinted at by others that 'maturity' takes place around or before the age of 40. Do what you will with the info.

I don't think anyone is disagreeing with their ability to meld, the debate was over what age they can start to reproduce. My own educated estimate would be 250ish at the earliest, no where near the 109 that Liara is currently. Though I don't think Shepard and Liara would be able to have little blue babies in the current or very near future, I do think that Shepard's hugely extended life span (due to all the upgrades she got from being resurrected), they will be able to have quite a few daughters if they so choose during Shepard's lifetime.

Okay, that's it. I'm bringing this thread back on track if it kills me. I have a strong dislike for the ending, but there are indeed other places to discuss this, so let's get back to talking about Liara, people! Questions!

1. When did your Shepard first fall for Liara?

2. Did you romance Liara on your first playthrough?

3. How did your Shepard feel about Liara's treatment of Shep on Illium? (pre-LotSB)

4. What did your Shepard tell Liara about how she/he felt in the cabin convo after LotSB? Worried/Hpeful/Frustrated?

5. Did your Shepard visit Liara before going back to Earth to stand trial?

6. Who are Liara's closest friends in your headcanon?

7. How many blue babies should there be? None? One? Five?

1) I immediately thought she was cute, but took a while to 'fall' for her.

2) Yes. Although just by being nice to everyone I got a love triangle going, had to reject ash.

3) Pissed off. Felt like she wasn't interested anymore. Ran into Talis arms, I'm afraid to say.

4) Worried. I also said I was sticking with tali. I made another play through later where I stuck loyal to Liara.

5) No, visited her before arrival.

6) I never got the impression she had many close friends. Shepard, Garrus, Tali and Wrex I guess. But everyone except Shepard seems to be at arms length.

7) hmmm... 3? Would be depressing though, shepard dying so quickly. Part of me hopes that the implants from cerberus will keep him alive much longer than normal. Of course if I had to fantasize, maybe keep him alive forever, he was dead afterall. ^_^

1. Well, my Shepard ( me actually, because it was in ME2 ) first fell in love with Liara in Mass Effect 2 during the missions I had with her and during the LotSB mission. At first I thought she's some blue alien with strange habits, but as I advanced through the LotSB mission I actually found her quite interesting and I knew I had to know more about her, so I dropped the playthrough and got into Mass Effect, and man, it was worth it.

2. Since my first playthrough was in ME2 no. But considering I never finished ME2, but ME, then yes, I romanced Liara in my first playthrough.

3. First of all, I already mentioned I played ME2 first, and I didn't feel much about the welcome considering I didn't know much about her. But after I got into ME2 again with a save from ME and Liara as my love, I ( well, Shepard ) felt like she was entitled to react the way she did. After all, I was dead for 2 years.

4. Worried. I don't know, I can't pull myself to pick the answers in the lower bracket of the wheel. But I was worried I might not be able to take it to the end, worried I will fail everyone out there, worried that I might lose Liara. As for the the frustrated line seems a little bit off. I'm a Paragon. And no, I don't blame the Council for not listening to my warnings, I understand them not being willing to believe in the Reapers threat. Maybe they were too afraid to believe they existed, or thought it was just a joke. I don't blame them. And my friends being against me ? There weren't much of them that were against me. But I guess those that were have overreacted. Ok, sure, I was with Cerberus but considering what I was doing, considering that they knew about the Collectors and the Reaper threat, and considering how some of our old friends joined my team, then yes, they pretty much overreacted. As for Cerberus, bleah. I used them for my own goal. To destroy the Collectors.

5. Well, after I had invited Liara to my cabin aboard the Normandy, I had to reach Earth to stand trial ( that wasn't a trial, d'oh ), so I guess yes, I did visit Liara - or vice versa - before heading back to Earth. I completed The Arrival after I defeated the Collectors.

6. In my headcanon ? That'd be Garrus, the space Batman and my bro ( doesn't matter if I play a femShep, he's my bro! ), Tali, Joker and Ashley/Kaidan, depends on which of the VS was alive during that playthrough. I like them both tho, they're both interesting characters. Ashley more with her girl stuff and Kaidan more with his caring and stuff.

7. I'd be fine with 3. But I think I'll have to take things slowly, see if Liara would like to have more after that first one *pops out*. How many she's comfortable with would do just fine.

Hooray!

Yeah, only we don't know why Liara was never told the truth.

It's because Aethyta seemed to have some sort of say in the raising of Liara, that leads me to think it was Aethyta's choice to leave Benezia and allow her to raise Liara without Aethyta being an aggressive influence in her life. It's not so much that Aethyta had a child before, we know nothing of the other girl, what happened? Maybe she became a merc, a dancer, which is precisely why Aethyta felt she wasn't right for Liara. *shrugs*

Everything I have seen (most specifically the A-y codex, Morinth runing away at 40 and Samara say that an Asari becomes a full adult when entering their maiden stage) points to Asari being sexually mature when they enter their maiden stage which appear to be around the 40 mark.

I can't think of any reason why an asari would not be able to have children when they are sexually mature. It is not usual for an asari to want to have children before hitting the matron stage around the 350 or so mark.

That's a good point.  Maybe something bad happened to the other daughter and she lost the confidence to parent.

Perhaps she was a merc, aggressive sort, and headbutted the wrong krogan one day.

Pretty much. Humans can usually have children as early as the age of 12 - 14, yet (luckily) almost no one has the desire to have children at such a young age. Instead most will want to wait until their late 20s to early 30s. I feel it's the same for Asari.

While they could potentially have children at the incredibly young age of 40, they do not want to until they've hit the matron stage at 350. This coincides with the description of the stages where maidens are impulsive and do not really know what they want to do with their lives (humans until early - mid 20s) and when they hit the matron stage they want to settle down and have children (humans late 20s and early 30s).

Edit: But as jlb wisely said, Shepard will live long enough to see Liara hit her matron stage and possibly even her matriarch stage so this whole point of not being able to have children is pretty much moot.=]

350, though it can be triggered ealier is what it says.
Edit:
Notice that the codex is quite specific about these stages being "biological tendencies", which should indicate that the ability to reproduce is tied directly to the stage of life they are in.

Choo choo! Final call for speculation train!

Anyway, nowhere does it specifically say when an asari is able to bear children, although mention is given to their life stage, which is not explicit confirmation of child bearing stage. But this should not be a concern for our thousand year old Shepards, anyway. A kid every hundred or so years sounds about right, right?

As far as I understand the asari, that's pretty much normal maiden behaviour.
I think Liara's sister wanted to become an accountant. A polite... accountant.

Didn't we come to the conclusion (several hundred pages back at least) that the merc that Wrex met was Aria. She mentions that she has been a commando before, has pissed off another dangerous krogan beyond Patriach before and even says "better luck next time" like Wrex's friend.
