I thought that crest was made of cartilage and cartilage doesn't have nerves, so how can it have heightened sensitivity if it has no nerves ?

The ear is made of cartilage. So is the nose. Just because its made of cartilage doesn't mean its not covered in skin (which asari headcrests clearly are). And thats where the nerves are.

The only reason you feel anything at all is due to nerves in the dermis.
Forgive my bluntness for a moment but theres a reason the nipples are erogenous areas. As a rule they're pretty sensitive...

I specialise in molecular work so I'm hardly a physiology or evolutionary expert but as far as I know...no they don't have any other reason for being sensitive. Its a pleasure thing. Erogenous zones are erogenous zones, simple as that. They don't need another "purpose".
I could probably give you more explicit examples of areas that "don't need to be sensitive" for anything other than pleasure but this is at least a moderately SFW forum so...I won't.
Hell, there's even strong arguments that the whole of human nature is inextricably related to sex. Try reading The Red Queen Hypothesis by Matt Ridley. Been a while since I read it but its a fascinating book. Sex and pleasure in and of itself is quite easily a strong enough argument biologically for retaining a feature and this kind of sensitivity.

There's plenty of speculation as to what happens to Shepard "after" each of the endings. Synthesis offers some very interesting possibilities. jtav's Brave New World explores one such avenue (I'm pimping it since I beta for her). I'm also using Synthesis in my 'Returned' fic. I'm sure there are others out there.
