I like the purple, I don't think green fits her though either your shade or wulfrums.  And I still say Blue is best but purple wouldn't be bad.  The whole reason i don't like the green is because it reminds me of the Silurians from Doctor Who.

,,, than it would if Shepard died.

How do you survive that with the compromised armor Shepard was wearing.  Plus Shepard was bleeding out and I honest thought she died before she talked to starboy.

I Thought we agreed that Shep was Wolverine????

The purple is kinda intriguing but it just doesn't "feel" right. I honestly think its because the blue with blue eyes is just amazing. Or maybe I'm just too used to seeing a blue Liara? Meh, either way.

I like that Asari, as a whole, have a variety of shades ranging from blues to purples, but I'll stick with Liara's vibrant blue, thanks. Still, I mean, it's a nice touch that they aren't all the exact same shade of blue.

It would've been cool to get to explore more of Thessia, maybe find out if different regions of Thessia tend to influence the shade an Asari will be.

Well, I have probably missed the discussion begun by Aristobulus500, but I must admit I enjoy a nice serious talk once in a while. I hope not to bother anyone by revisiting it...

My introduction to Liara was, probably, quite different than most. I bought ME2 used for the PS3 after the free code for the Cerberus Network (aka. intro comic) had expired. So, a no-import ME2 with LotSB bundled on the disc. I was resistant to the idea of a Liara romance for my femShep because of the lesbian-as-other implications -- basically, making the only real f/f option an alien/human option can be seen from the outside as an "alienization" of f/f relationships.

I initially decided to just play the game with no romance. The scene between Liara and Shepard in the opening planted the seeds of their connection but nothing seemed romantic at heart, just a strained moment between comrades.

Yes, everything was going swimmingly until Lair of the Shadow Broker... The tone and tensions between Shepard and Liara change when that episode begins. I started to feel attached when investigating Liara's apartment after her attempted murder, and at the trade embassy bombing, when Shepard yells, "Liara's in there!" at the burning building I knew Shep had some serious feelings about her. As the absolutely brilliant mission played out (in one sitting because it was just too good to put down), I started wanting their scenes to have more clearly romantic overtones that would really tighten the screws of tension and suspense in the story. Estranged lovers reuniting? A good story that I found myself suddenly wanting to see.

Inviting her to the cabin for drinks -- really just drinks -- was a very "Grrr, y u no kiss Shep after all that?" moment, though well done as usual for anything touched by Patrick Weekes.

LotSB was, at heart, a romantic adventure, I felt, and a very very fun one. I looked up what needed to be done, caved in and bought the intro comic, and restarted my game with the required Liaramance import. My second run through LotSB was more of the same great fun and in the end more romantically entertaining as well. ^_^ So, for me, Liara's story was so good, so emotionally compelling, that I couldn't resist having Shep fall for her. She is a lovely blend of deadly business and gentle concerns. I like complicated characters that are able to balance a mixture of qualities like that. ME is fortunately to have many well-developed characters.

I was so inspired by all the creativity on the forums that I had to skip my lunch today and draw this (on my ipad) instead of eating. I figured it would work for anyone's Shepard that was faithful to Liara, regardless of how their story ended. So it's either sad or happy, depending on how you want to take it. Hope you like!

Oh, and I'm totally gonna do a baby krogan with an N7 hoodie for the Tali and Garrus Shepards. You know ... cause of adopting. :P

I found that there's loads of tension in LotSB for a non-romanced Shep (if you choose to interpret it that way).

It was done by someone who loves Liara I believe.

Anyways, I do agree that stuff like Cerberus and Udina Liara probably should've gotten a heads up on. It's another reason why I don't like Sam that much, since she finds all these Cerberus locations and intel, but Liara doesn't.

I never really liked the asari as a race. They're very snooty. The revelation on Thessia that they basically lucked into everything they have and that they're no better than anyone else was hilarious.

I definitely think there's an air of elitism to the Asari, however compared to every other race? That's not that bad. At any rate, it's certainly true that every race - especially and including humanity - believes itself to be truly better than every other race.

Most people are prejudiced by their surroundings to a degree, but you're making a huge speculative generalization here. Anti-alien sentiment in humans stems from a turian fleet noticing strange aliens violating an absurd law they weren't aware of, created by a government they didn't even knew existed, and deciding that the best response would be to start invading their colonies. The codex says this gave humans a bad reputation, for reasons I can't even fathom.

Aristobulus500 wrote...
Anyway, I actually like that the Asari are not magically perfect, and actually have flaws of their own. It all goes back to how I harped on that I liked their culture - flaws and all. That they have flaws makes them an even deeper and more fleshed out race than if they were just perfect space elves, and further since their flaws make sense - for a race that lives so long, and will witness many generations of other races in a single lifetime, and has natural biotics that other races have to really strain themselves to get? And being the first race to discover the Citadel, and form the foundations for the galactic community?

Yes, I think it perfectly makes sense that they would be elitist. Despite that, it's toned down because while they have that part of their culture pushing them to believe they are better, they also have that Asari/Asari pairings are looked down on, meaning they are encouraged to accept other races, not just hate everything and believe only Asari are good. So it's more like, Asari would be more likely to accept every race, but still think Asari are inherently the best.

Asari biotics are the result of genetic engineering. They didn't figure out mathematics and agriculture on their own, the protheans did that for them. They didn't even have to leave their homeworld to figure out FTL because of the beacon. Granted all spacefaring races built their civilizations around scavenged prothean technology, but asari in particular got where they are now because aliens meddled with them in their stone age. It makes sense that many asari are smug because they don't know this and think that they're superior, but that doesn't mean I have to like it.

Aristobulus500 wrote...
I admit on an individual level, though, Asari appealed to me once I got introduced to more because they usually seem to be calm and collected, compared to the other races. The Asari councilor was, for example, the most reasonable of the three council members. I felt, anyway.

There's a lot of rude and condescending asari in the games. On Illium, in particular. I wanted to slap them across the face. Bioware wouldn't let me. <_<

Yeah, yeah. I know.

Speaking of how Liara's SB role was handled, anyone found it weird how the Barla Von thing was handled? Liara tells you to talk to him, and then he tells you the "Shadow Broker" want's you to do this. And I'm like "Why didn't Liara just tell me on the Normandy or something?"

Thanks though. I was really upset that it came out like it did. It looked much better on paper, but when I put it through the scanner, it lost a lot of its quality. I had to use my tablet to trace over all the lines, and I had to resize it.

One thing I noticed on Thessia is that the floors have pockets of water. Makes me wonder if asari walk barefoot or sandals on Thessia, or wear shoes that water doesn't ruin.

I certainly hope people aren't going to be mad about replying to something a few pages back. This thread moves fast, if you limit yourself to only what's on the most recent pages that can seriously narrow the scope of what discussions are possible.

Personally, I'm more interested in serious, thoughtful discussions than anything else. I can only hope others are interested as well.

So you've never actually played through ME1? I'm surprised to hear that even when you didn't know who Liara was, LotSB managed to touch you like that.

My post didn't really cover LotSB, and yours mostly focused on LotSB, so I guess if I want to respond to you, I should mention it.

I certainly agree with you that LotSB is amazing. I honestly think LotSB is straight up the best content in the entire trilogy, and it lays the foundations for Liara as she is in ME3 - it's no coincidence that she uses the LotSB outfit as her default in ME3. Liara's character changes and develops throughout all 3 games, and her character in 3 is basically exactly that as from LotSB, whereas in ME2 it was a rather more cold, subdued, bitter and angry personality.

...But I'm going to stop myself before I go off on a tangent about how bad her vanilla ME2 encounter was. Lair of the Shadowbroker then. It was a great development of Liara's character - not only did it address the many flaws with Liara and her relationship to Shepard from the vanilla encounter, it just gave her a spark of life, and some amazing dialogue as she works through where exactly she stands with Shepard.

When I say that the Liara/Shep romance is very "equal" and not at all just Shepard taking advantage of the other, I'm most specifically going to be thinking of the LotSB romance and ME3 romance. Liara and Shepard actually talking about themselves and where they stood with eachother, as adults, was just something you never see. I felt it was a very mature way to handle a videogame romance, it took itself seriously when it needed to - yet still allowed for some fun chemistry and dialogue during the actual gameplay segments. I know a lot of that dialogue is the same even if you didn't romance her, but damned if it doesn't really fit a Liara-loyal Shep.

It wasn't just talk, too. They really acted like they cared for eachother, and it was seriously amazing the way they managed to show emotion. As well...just some amazing visuals. Look at the scene after you defeat the shadow broker, where Liara helps Shep up and they kiss...as the light explodes behind them illuminating them. It's...quite something.

But kissing is something you even see in teenage level romances of say, Final Fantasy. So I give the romance line credit for implying that they go further, too, aboard the Normandy (of course this applies to ME1/ME3 as well but I'm focusing on LotSB for the moment) and I give it triple credit for managing to make it tasteful and not purely fanservice...though if I were to specifically mention LotSB, like all of the romances, it was rather too tame. The dialogue on the Normandy though, was enough. Full of emotion and just seeing them discuss how they felt in earnest - I have to point out that it's one of the rare times Shepard drops the gung ho leader bravado and really lets his emotions come through, and he does it for Liara. It's very powerful to see them really respecting eachother like that.

But I found LotSB amazing even aside from all the interactions with Liara - personally, I loved the chance to really get to explore more of an Asari city. I love Asari architecture and design, and even before LotSB I would always take a moment to just enjoy the skyline of Ilium. There's just something really sleek, yet still alien looking, about their designs. So exploring Hotel Azure was a great chance to just get to see more of an Asari city, and gameplay wise it's still further impressive.

Tela V'asir is easily the best boss fight in the entire trilogy - she actually feels like an equal to Shepard - something Captain Crunch can only dream of - and has some good taunts for him while she's fighting him. Not to mention she's a fun, challenging fight, with the way she zips around the battlefield and is actually just as aggressive as Shepard can be. Even outside of the fight, she maintains her strength - she actually gets a shot in on Shepard so good, he really doesn't have a good response to her - when she's dying and she calls Shepard out for being a hypocrite with Cerberus, and Shepard just has a weak response. Really, she was a great character. I personally would've loved if she survived LotSB to be the rival antagonist in ME3 instead of Lucky Charms.

I also want to mention just how well designed Hagalaz was from a gameplay perspective - it was perfectly tailored to Liara and making great use of her biotics. So much fun to watch her lift people into the air and send them flying away from the ship, to be struck by lightning and distintegrated.

But I have to ask, if you haven't played through ME1, do you plan to, now that you have an investment in Liara? Just to see the beginnings? As well, I'm curious, what were your thoughts on Asari initially, and has your fondness for Liara changed how you feel towards the Asari? I just think it's interesting to see how the primary characters can color peoples dispositions toward their race as a whole.
