I hope they add that to the new clarification DLC!

I don't expect it though.

I don't either.  But to be honest?  They should.  And I'm not just saying that because "Oh happy blue babies and sunshine and rainbows and crap"  This is the end of Shepard's story.  The very last time that Shepard will appear in a game.  Why the hell shouldn't they be able to give her/him a decent sendoff?  Not some "Oh wow, did Shepard take a breath?!?  Yay!  Shepard lived!!!" crap, either.  Because that sort of thing only flies if there's even the possibility that the character will be used again.  But if this is really it, if this is the last time we're going to have a chance to see our Shepards in all their 3D glory, I want a freaking happy ending.  Chop off a limb if you really need some level of sacrifice to feel "fulfilled."  But for frak's sake, give us SOMETHING...

This definately, who here thinks they should have made TheMarshal the project director. Then maybe we could have gotten something fulfilling for everyone.

It really is the mark of a bad writer if it's supposed that the only way to end a character's story is for them to die. I am okay with Shepard dying in some endings, but not every ending. A perfect playthrough should give you a happy Star Wars-esque triumphant ending, because ME is a space opera. Not a Shakespearean tragedy.

A perfect playthrough should get Shepard retiring, and that's the end of his story. You can have an epilogue that gives him a sendoff, but he doesn't have to die to not be used in any more games.

I mean, after ME3, if the galaxy was still intact and such, and some new threat arises - just have it be that Shepard is done. He's flown under the radar with his LI and isn't around to save things anymore, leave it to some new protagonist.

This too definately, this is one of the defining problems I have with the ending. I'm a completionist, I do everything I possibly can to have a full game. Every side quest, every planet scanned found everything I could possibly find and I'm still "rewarded" with a vague "deep breath" scene. My crew and LI that I spent the last 3 games building relationships with are stranded on Gilligans Planet and if you take what the Starbrat says at face value then with the destroy ending everyone is screwed. They wouldn't have had to do the entire Star War medal scene or anything but if they would have shown the Normandy swooping down over the rubble and your LI running up to find Shep that would have been completely suficient for me to declare this a perfect game. The rest of the stuff about the relays getting destroyed and stuff I could have "speculated" or headcannoned and I would have been just fine with it.

Well, see, that's the thing. That's the issue that Walters/Hudson missed - they delivered an ending that they call a "victory" because, on an extremely large, abstract scale, you allow for life to develop, somewhere in the galaxy, without having to worry about Reapers.

The problem is, that is not a victory for Mass Effect. It could easily work as a satisfying victory in another game, in another series, in another style of sci-fi. The problem is that Mass Effect is a character driven story, so when the player is told they sacrificed all of the characters and races they knew and cared about for some hard to visualize abstract concept? It doesn't work. It's not what they wanted. It won't be a victory, but instead a crushing defeat.

In a series where you do not form attachments to characters much at all, and they are just means to an end, then the bigger picture like that can be worth it.

But for me - and judging from the reactions, many other people - I could not possibly give less of a **** about some unknown lifeform I was never introduced to. Throughout the entire trilogy, I barely even cared about the Reapers. They worked perfectly fine as a villain, a force to fight against and that's it. I didn't have to know much about them, other than that they stood to kill me and everything I knew.

I was playing then not specifically for the mission, but for the characters. I was fighting for the fates of, on the largest scale, the Asari, the Krogan, the Turians, etc. and on a smaller scale, individuals such as Liara, Garrus, Wrex, etc. Races I knew, and people I knew, pretty well. I was playing to see how they developed across the games, and the Reapers served more as a force to introduce character growth and development in them.

By that I mean, Mass Effect is pretty unique in how invested it got me in the established lore, characters, races, and overall setting. The conflict was, for a change, not the reason I was playing. The Reapers could've got lost and all fallen into a black hole in their way back to the galaxy, and I barely would've cared, I was so invested in the universe. I mean, I was happy just to talk to the characters and learn as much as I could about the alien cultures and explore their worlds.

To put it simply, Mass Effect was fulfilling a rather base desire of mine - that is, to be able to explore. It's escapism - it was about how, when I look up at the sky at night and see all the other stars of our galaxy, it was an answer to "What is out there? What is other life like? If it's civilized, what is it like? How does their culture compare to ours?"

The alien races were so well developed, and the characters so realistic and fleshed out that I grew beyond caring about the conflict as anything other than a threat to them. This is how character driven the trilogy was, to me.

So in the end, I'm told I sacrificed all of that. I burned all of that to the ground - on a large scale, I have completely destroyed all of the wondrous alien cultures I wanted to explore more of, and their worlds are ruined, and the entire galactic community that filled me with so much awe - that's gone. And on the small scale, the characters I had such an attachment to, I was fighting for, the very heart of why I wanted to defeat the Reapers - they were doomed to a miserable existence so bleak I may as well have just handed them over to the Reapers.

And for what? So some alien race I don't even know exists, in a solar system I never visited or heard about, can maybe, maybe one day explore their neighboring solar systems. You'll have to excuse me as I jump up and down in triumph and victory.

This is why the ending is a failure, especially for Mass Effect. And it's why the ending is so poisonous - they can't even make more games in the series. About anything, because everything that I loved and cared about in the ME universe is gone. It no longer can fulfill that desire to explore the galaxy I wanted it for.

But, I honestly believe that the main writing staff is aware of things like this. It's all up to the ending DLC to restore things.

As things stand right now, "Ain't No Sunshine" seems appropriate.

When (not "if") Shepard manages to track her down, let's just say he's going to introduce Liara to some old Earth classics from the likes of Barry White and Marvin Gaye... if you know what I mean. Not clear enough? It's "Business Time." Still not blunt enough? Shepard's going to be taking some advice from Tenacious D.

On a more serious note, there's a really beautiful song on the soundtrack of La vita è bella. It would have an extra layer of relevance as the movie centers around a war-time romance (set in Italty during World War II). If you watch it, I recommend the subtitled version. The English dubbing isn't as good as the original Italian.

I think Shep is Liara's first love and only love till the end... of ME3. She is so loyal, faithful, devoted. An unconditional love even if some Shep doesn't love her. Unlike some other LIs. It's one of many reasons my Shep and me love her so much . I don't know why some people could hate her <_<. She deserves love and happiness.
Jacob is a player. He makes out with Miranda. It shows in the SB's video. I hate it when my Shep said  "I'm more interested in just talking for a bit"

They are. Weekes gets it. He understands why people play ME and what they care about (hint: not far-flung abstractions). He, Dombrow, and the full writing team will do what they can with what they're stuck with... I'm cautiously optomistic the ickle blue babies may yet be born. *crosses fingers*

HAte to bring this up, but, theres still the original problems in control of things.. those being Hack Walters and Airplane Hudson. What we got is directly on those two nimrods and what you will all get with said dlc will still be influenced and have to be signed off on by the original problem creators.
I have no optimism at all for anything that will even remotely fix the mess those two made.

Urrgh that line was/is horrible in ENG ME2. I don't know if they wanted to push Jacob as the ME2 Li for femshep, or something, but it backfired.

The ending can be redeemed, but it will have to be very carefully done.  Do you guys remember Allis tweet from a few months ago? The 'okay okay blue babies for everyone' tweet..

She also said a heartfelt goodbye in the release night interviews.  But I guess that could be interpretted in a couple of ways.  Your point still stands?  I kinda thought the blue baby thing as more of a "oh fine" joke mixed with a "for the love of god quit tweeting me with baby mating requests".

I think Liara may have set her claws in me.... 360 died, so now I have to replay the whole series on PC. (I refuse to play without an import....) So, I wanted a romance that I'd stick with through the series and for FemShep, that's either Kaidan or Liara. (Perhaps Garrus if you want to pretend) Now, Kaidan's not a bad guy, but after so many playthroughs, Xbox and PC, I was a bit like this:

FemShep: ZZZzzzzz......

Kaidan: Commander?

FemShep: Zzzzz.... *Snort* Eh? Oh, right, Rahna, or whatshername, yeah, I was listening. Do go on about your emotionally scarring adolenscence.

Kaidan: So, anyway, that mean turian was like, "RAWR" And he made me scare my girlfriend away. And I was all, "Damn you Saul! Damn you!"

FemShep: Wait, what did you say?

So, out of extreme boredom and a near memorization of everything both Carth and Kaidan angst about, I decided to try out Liara who gets decidedly badass later. Her lack of social skills are charming and remind me of... me. It's the line about performing an "in depth study" on the commander and then abruptly realizing her innuendo that got me hooked. That was so funny. I want to see where this goes....

Yeah, but remember that 2 years is nothing to an Asari - it's like a month or something. But sure Jacob didn't hang around much!

Lovely, loyal Liara. Besides, she's the only one that does the impossible to find you, challenging odds, facing mercenaries, SB's agents and even cooperating with Cerberus. She's too awesome. <3

You have the feeling that she'd charge into Hell itself to get Shepard back. If I was the Devil, I'd stay out of an angry Liara's way!

Finally caught up after reading 15 pages. You guys move incredibly fast.

SuperClutch16, waiting for part 4 of your fanfic. Can't leave a cliffhanger like that. :(

As for the ending, they know they can't screw up twice on this, as the backlash was huge. I remain casually optimistic, but if it does fall through, I'll just go with Shepard finding out where they went after her recovery and rescuing them. They may not change the scene at all with the stupid 3 options in the Extended Cut, but anything they add is gonna change what we can assume, even if it doesn't show us a reunion, for better or worse. That's where I stand on it and gonna hold off on any extra stuff till we see it.

Edit: Here's a pic i haven't seen recently, currently is my desktop background :).
