I'd guess Bioware didn't want to make Liara too important - fans of other characters complain about her getting a lot of focus already.

And she does after all discover the key to defeating the Reapers, piling more plot importance on top of that might be going too far.

She gets more with her romance than the others.  We are forgetting that as well.  There are many that feel Liara is forced on them.  She melds with Shepard during ME1 even if Shepard tells her no.  Which did tick people off.

BW needed to balance things out some.  I don't think it is Liara's job to tell Shepard what Shepard needs to be doing.  She gave Shepard intel through out the game.  That is enough.

Execpt we never see Liara giving intel for Shepard (the only place I can remember is the AY monastary), Traynor is always the one that spots and find all those Cerberus activities for example. Making Liara seem useless.

It's all one of the symptoms of BioWare not having the time they needed. Narr-a-tive co-he-sion not being present.

I beg to differ, but I do not want to debate it.

People need to remember one thing.  Writing a narritive on this scope is not easy.  They have to account for more than any other type of medium.  There are over 10 different LI for Shepard.  That in itself can be a nightmare.  Then add in the route each Shepard can take.  Which is many.  They have to try and make it all work.  It is perfect? No it is not, but they did a good job with most of it.

You may feel the game seems rushed, but I do not see it.  We got a wonderful story.  Just not one many people wanted or expected when it comes to the ending, which I find fitting.  Which is why I wasn't expecting anything and kept away from this site for almost four months.

I just finished watching the Pax Bioware panel video on YouTube with the ME3 team, and it was quite enlightening just how complex the plots and characters become when you have to account for all the permutations....

Which makes the bad writing arugement many have here invalid in my view.  This was an extremely complex story with many branches.   It will never happen again.  Too much work involved.  CHud said that in an interview for ME2 that he didn't see BW doing another game with the set up like Mass Effect.

I've read books where there are continunity issues.  And those books were written by one person and not a team of writers.

They could have kept it simple and had fewer characters in the games, but they didn't do that.  They gave us a game so big in scope we as the players I feel really don't appreciate it.

I do not want to debate this.  Everyone has their own views.  Nothing wrong with that.

I would love for some to sit down.  Start writing a narrative with the scope of Mass Effect and see how well you do with it.  I know how hard it is.

Everyone have a good day.  I'm off to finish playing ME2, so I can import and finally do my canon run with Leia.  I will leave you with a few pics as I leave.

No, but sometimes happily ever after, isn't.  But, she does have Shepard in the stars....

I wouldn't have had a problem with that being one of the endings if your EMS wasn't high enough but I really want Shep to be rescued by their LI and retire to some far off quite world not what we got. To be honest they have put Shepard through enough in the games that retirement with their LI of choice should be the least thing Bioware gave Shepard. And the Liara Project Scene I think was Liara's idea if they failed not if they succeeded.

Edit: Not quite Top but I'll post one anyway.

If you don't want to discuss or debate this then stop posting about it. Don't take potshots and make parting shots and then just say you're "not interested." That just seems weak and hostile.

The whole "oh but it's HAAAARD" is a flimsy excuse you're buying into hook, line, and sinker. I know it's hard. And that's why when they do it well, they get massive amounts of money and credit for it. Look at how much money the ME series has made, and that's because up until ME3, it mostly did a very good job with all these complicated and difficult issues. Hell, even ME3 had lots of very good high points that handled those issues well and overcame the challenges posed to the writers - Tuchanka is amazing in that regards. Of course we've been over how the Suicide Mission was a great way to handle all the variations players could have throughout their playthrough.

As Jacob would say, "Heavy risk, but the priiiize.." Yes. It's difficult to write all this in a satisfying way, but look at how rich it has made them, when they did it well.

I don't think Liara necessarily needed any more big discoveries, but they could have had her offer a bit more in the line of background intel if you brought her on a mission - or if you asked her in her cabin beforehand. Since it would be optional - and mostly just backstory - I don't think that would have provoked too many complaints. And since it could be a basic non-cinematic thing with little or no Shepard interaction, it wouldn't have taken up many resources either.

Liara is doing a lot of Shadow-Brokery things in her cabin....sometimes when you enter you can hear her and Glyph talking about Agent Blah and Agent Blub....so in my head she is the one who gives most of the intel to others. Traynor manages to tell Shep something because Liara wanted it that way....same for Hackett, etc... ;)

Liara could also put pepperspray into Traynor's clothes to gently dishearten her from flirting with Shep....if she so wanted! That's how powerful she is!

So yeah....from a writing point of view I can understand that they had to tone it down a bit to not make the other fans too upset about her big role....I can substitute the details in my head. At least with her Shadow Broker thing....not so much with other things concerning her.

I said it in LDG, actually...

Isn't it amazing how badly we took ME2 pre-Lair? I mean, we legitimately allowed ourselves to believe (well, at least those who didn't have a tag in french that ruined the page coding with its length, and a few others) that Liara was going to be written out of the series. How we jumped all over ... york's very-much-appreciated-didn't-have-to-do-it-but-probably-a-teensy-bit-rushed summary of Redemption #4 and took it as 'proof' that Liara didn't care about Shep anymore... though a few of us a) caught the expression on Liara's face when she said 'then maybe you shouldn't have...' et al. and equated it with 'what the hell are we getting back if she's been dead this long?'; and B) remembered that they had to write this for the Shepard who loves Liara AND the Shepard who threatened to toss her into the volcano.

Cut to now, and I think that last Shep has been retconned out of existence. Shepard and Liara are canon friends-if-not-more. Liara is the only squadmate that cannot die. (I discount low-EMS screwups in the final mission. Those tend to be utter failures anyway.) She is the only pre-existing squaddie to get her own DLC, all to herself. If IMDB wants to do this justice, they should list Mark or Jen first on the credits list, the other second, and Ali Hillis third, because she's the co-lead of the entire series. The only other arguments could be Anderson and maybe Hackett.

So in other words, I actually support anything that alleviates calls of The Wesley. (Granted, I liked Wesley Crusher myself, but I know I'm weird.) Liara's actually well written, though I'd say that's true of all the original squad members, and her only flaw is that ... they didn't give Kai, Ash, Tali, Garrus and Wrex as much screen time in 3 that they did her. (I'd almost say 'combined', but it's an exaggeration.)

But this is one thing that I give CHud and the Hack credit for (though usually I tend to give Patrick Weekes credit where Liara is concerned. Not sure who was leading on her this game though): the one thing Casey has said that I believed and continue to believe is Liara is his favorite. I even, dare I say, shudder to think, wonder if it hurt him to gut Liara out of the second game. (Again, I'm weird. :P)

Oh the way she trashes the place... so awesome. Maybe that's why she isn't that way in the game, Shepard wouldn't have anything to do but to sit back and watch Liara tear up everything. Who needs guns!

In one of the first ever missions I took Liara on, there was this huge crate (taller than Shepard) in the middle of the room that we entered. Then, a group of nearly a dozen enemies swarmed into the room to attack us. In a single move, Liara threw the massive crate clear across the room and killed them all in less than two seconds after they came through the door. My jaw dropped and I just stood there staring at her handiwork. Since then, Liara has never left my side unless she just wasn't a squadmate (ME2). I guess you could say it was love at first fight...

CDHarrisUSF, where did that happen? I can't remember. :(
-
On the Shadow Broker subject.
From the view of the ingame stuff, not including any of the messages you get in your private terminal or any background events that you have to imagine for yourself. What would be different if Liara wasn't the Shadow Broker?
She would have less monitors in her cabin, she wouldn't have that little robot named Glyph and she wouldn't tell Shepard to talk to that volus. Please tell if I forgot something, it's all a bit hazy, I'm sleepy.

I honestly thought that her taking the job of the Shadow Broker was the best thing ever. I was so damn excited about it and expected so much out of it, so for me it was quite a disappointment. :(
But yeah I guess it's what some of you said, because she's also an LI-option, it would've been "unfair" for others to make her a major character.

It wasn't a scripted event. It was just something random that happened with the physics and everyone being in the right place at the right time. I don't remember what we were doing at the time, because it was in one of the many reused buildings that you find while exploring with the Mako. They all look the same.

Love it!  Well, I do like this ending better...

www.youtube.com/watch

Just watched that video...and...I dont like it...

Well let me rephrase that...I liked it untill around the 8:00 min mark (the ending, how ironic)

The last part dosent make sence to me, nor do I like how you die next to Anderson, when you had a scene with Liara in rubble just before....Wut? Hallucination? I hate that idea. And at least in the real Destroy ending you can still live to headcannon another day.

But Ive never liked or agreed with the idea that Shepard should wake up on Earth. I believe he is still on the Citadel. Im not going to add additional layers of assumption by beliving something like he somehow got Teleported back to Earth. But ive never been a fan of the Indoctrination Theory anyway.

but thats just my opinoin so dont go spreadin it around. Image IPB
