Yeah, so they typically will lock them if they get too large...but there's no auto-lock threshold.

I'm not sure how to answer question 1 and 3 - do you mean how do I think they ACTUALLY ended up, in game, with our current endings? Or do you just mean, how would I have wanted it?

As for what I was expecting, I can answer that. Before the game came out, I was expecting that there would be a variety of different endings just like how the Suicide Mission worked.

I figured there would be scales of victory and defeat, ranging from complete success with no casualties, to some casualties, to total defeat and the Reapers win.

So, I figured it would be possible for Liara - and others - to die. But in a best ending? I figured Shep and Liara would survive, and the galaxy would be restored to a status quo, galactic community intact.

I thought that perhaps after defeating the Reapers and living, if I had made the right choices and played perfectly to achieve that ending, I'd get an epilogue of Shepard retiring somewhere on Thessia with Liara. Get a chance to see what casual life is like on an alien homeworld as Shep/Liara retire from constant galaxy wide threats to have a normal life.

In a lower EMS ending I would've expected that - assuming Liara survived - Shepard might die and then the epilogue would be Liara helping a memorial be built to remember Shepard, and she heads off to help rebuild Thessia. Perhaps it would turn out that last sex scene with Liara got her pregnant, and she ends up raising a kid in Shepard's memory.

Alright, then. Now that I understand your question better, I'll answer a bit more, too. What I wanted isn't too different from what I expected. Pretty much, I wanted Shepard and Liara to be able to survive the series, and I wanted the galactic community to remain intact.

I wanted them to go back to Thessia afterwards to retire, and get a normal life. Shep and Liara talk about it sometimes throughout the series, but they never actually really get to rest much.

You only get a small glimpse at Liara having a normal life, when you play Lair of the Shadow Broker, and you see her apartment. As I said earlier in the thread, I loved getting a chance to really just get a look at what casual, every day life would be like on an alien planet, especially an Asari one, and her apartment was that glimpse.

So I'd want an epilogue to show me more of that, through Shep/Liara enjoying themselves and eachother's company, somewhere on Thessia. Especially since you don't actually get to see much of Thessia. An epilogue here would also be another chance to see Thessia fleshed out, through them.

You could even include a final romance scene in this epilogue, since you'd have to actually have worked to get Shep/Liara to survive AND the galaxy to survive so that they had somewhere to retire to, as well. Which makes it different than the romance scene before assaulting TIM'S base, because that only requires that you romance Liara, but it's harder to actually get this epilogue, since if you don't make the right choices throughout the games, then Shep/Liara can die in the end, and perhaps parts of the galactic community might not survive. So you need a perfect run to allow this epilogue.

I don't know if I'd want a cliche'd "wedding scene" in the epilogue, but if they did, I'd want it to be used as a chance to flesh out Asari culture. I would want it to be an Asari style wedding, that should damn well be significantly different than an American human wedding as we think of it. I wouldn't mind that. But I'd be rather bored by a stereotypical human wedding.

Just going into some more detail with what I'd want in an ideal ending, since you asked. Is this a better, satisfactory answer? Anything else you'd like to know?

Also if I might ask, why did you want to know?

If I was to go simply on the characters I'd say Liara and Shepard would live a fairly incognito life, Liara is a very private and guarded person who wouldn't enjoy the limelight or title of "Galactic Hero". I'd also assume any Shepard that's been with her this long is either a similarily private individual or willing to be one for Liara. The two would live a fairly peaceful life probably on an Asari colony where nobody really knows who they are.
