One complaint about Liara's ME1 romances is that it almost feels like Shepard is being irresponsible, or taking advantage of Liara. Do you agree with this? And if so, do you consider it a bad thing?
I absolutely disagree. You want Shepard taking advantage of someone? Look at Tali in ME2.
Liara isn't a child, she's a college grad that has been on her own for a while. She's capable of thinking and caring for herself, and she's often the one to make the moves on Shepard. I think they have a pretty equal and mature relationship, that only vastly improves in that as the series gets on, but even in ME1 it's good.
It's even the most equal of the relationships in ME1, because Shepard doesn't have rank over Liara - he does over Kaidan/Ashley.

But considering the situation, I feel a lot of the romances comes from respect and trust. Maybe not love yet, but a what the hell, I trust you kind of thing. And with the mindmelds, it's possible they gained an inner attraction and connection. Maybe it's destiny. They don't know why they like each other. But they do. So what the hell.

why did you have to bring Tali into this, i didn't feel like i was taking advantage of her in ME2 since i went through a whole new playthrough to be with her and not cheat on Liara. and since by the time you romance her you've known her longer than you did Liara in me1 and atleast to me Tali was always in my little group with Garrus and Liara so i felt they knew eachother well. as for what TMA said about trust. Tali trusts Shep and my Shep atleast did what he could to try and show Tali that he cared, I even chose the i can't risk you being sick option originally before later affirming that i wanted her. as for Liara in ME1 as TMA also said maybe the melding helped create that bond of trust and as i said in my headcanon Shep hung with Liara, Tali, and Garrus the most so i'm sure they became good if not close friends. to answer fully though i don't feel like i took advantage of either Liara in ME1 or Tali in ME2

Maybe It's love at first sightTMA LIVE wrote...
I do think Shepard is being a bit irresponsible, since he's hitting the sack with someone he barely knows. Same with Liara. And because of the experience Liara had from killing her mother, or almost starving to death, or being a fish out of water on the Normandy, it might not be right time to start a romance with her. Especially since you're her first, and a lot of her feelings might be just because of the situation.
But considering the situation, I feel a lot of the romances comes from respect and trust. Maybe not love yet, but a what the hell, I trust you kind of thing. Like I said before, I think Liara's romance in ME1 is pretty rush. But she loves Shepard and my Shepard has a thing for blue eyes

Mass Effect seems like a short game, like it all happens very quickly - but ME1 actually takes place over the span of months. There's lots of downtime you don't actually witness - things like traveling between systems and things like that. It's sped up for convenience sake.
So there's actually quite a bit of time for Shepard and Liara to get to know eachother better. And again, with melding with Shepard, Liara can use that to learn more about him and decide for herself if he's really the kind of person she wants to be with.
But really, the short of it is just that there's a lot of interactions between the crew you simply won't get to see as the player. Sure, that's an abstract answer, but it's the truth when you realize that ME takes place over months, and to the player it feels like days.

Indeed. I mean, logistics and all that jazz makes reality seem things progress a lot slower than they really do.

Oh God, is there a lot to the game if you really think about it. I finished two speed runs (one while listening to dialogue, the next spacebarring) in less time it takes to finish the game 100%. The main storyline is actually pretty short when you aren't negotiating the Mako or liasing between two people or running through suspiciously similar bunkers.....
I would love more fics depicting Shep and Liara getting to know each other between the missions. All you really talk about with Liara is her (which is nice) but it would also be nice to be able to talk about my Shep's Spacer background and how that's influenced her and the Blitz in more detail. Seems like after the first game, the series kind of just forgets about the Background and Psychological Profile you chose and glosses over it when they do actually bother to bring it up. Seems like wasted potential, especially in Spacer Shep's case. After all, that background is the only one that has a surviving family member and all we get is a, "Oh, btw, your mom says hi," in-game.

If you think Shepard is being irresponsible, I think you are mistaking your own irresponsibility in jumping into something you feel is too soon or fast, since your Shepard is nothing more than an extension of yourself, that you control and decide whether to enter that relationship or not.TMA LIVE wrote...

This is from holdtheline.com... I found it adorable!
Deltakarma asked: why fsheps seem to choose Liara in ME3 more now?
So I gave the most adequate awnser I could. After disscussing it with other straight-female players, what I previously mentioned seems to be the general concensus.
If you're a new fshep player to the franchise and start in ME3: it's easy to get the impression that fshep is meant to be a 'lesbian, or with the mono-gendered alien. Even the fshep marketing tends to suggest it, by the mostly non-existance of Kaidan.
Now for the straight female-player, it's easier to get with Liara, because the line of thinking tends to go like this:
New Player-She looks like a chick, but isen't really, so technically I'm not playing a gay Shepard.
Male players who want lesbian action can play fshepxliara through all 3 games.
Females who prefer the same gender play fshepxliara through all three games.
Fshep players who get to ME3 (And are uncomfortable with Garus.)and realise they are pretty much screwed over by all the other LI might go 'might as well get with the blue chick.' (Because getting with her is technically not lesbian.)
If you don't like Kaiden or Garus, it's either Liara or pretty much nothing.(Because Thane dies, and Jacob cheats ect. Again, it's easier to justify Liara over Traynor.)
The only stable relationships for Fshep that dont have death, cheating, or trying to kill you, are Garus/Liara/Traynor.
You can save all of Brosheps LI and none of them cheat on you.
So because Broshep has more positive outcomes in the LI department, they have more choices that work out in the end.
Had the positive outcomes been even numbered, then maybe fshep/liara would not have been as popular.
Urggh my head is spinning now. I hope I'm making sense here.( Because I'm trying to process three languages right now.)

Thank you.
I get what you mean, they should have shown Kaiden more in my opinion. And some things in the game, like how Traynor pushes herself onto you and the way Liara acts, makes me think the people at Bioware wanted FShep to be a lesbian or something.

That was cute the only real thing i take issue with is the mention of car instead of speeder/shuttle at the end. But i could definately see Aethyta acting like that towards her granddaughter, leaving a trouble maker in charge of a little troublemaker is only going to breed shennanigans:)

An ME3 "date scene" in ME1 would be very welcome. It's actually kind of weird that the third game has one, in which you and Liara have already been intimate with each other and are still discussing whether or not to get together, yet in the first game, you only talk about this on the Normandy without actually getting to know each other. I've mentioned this before, but both Kaidan's and Liara's romance are really flat in ME1. (I can't speak for Ashley having never rolled a Manshep.) They're both walking Codex enteries and only really talk about themselves. It would have helped if you talked more about your background or profile in this regard.
I feel that KotOR was better at this, because IIRC, then the romance between you and Bastila was significanly longer, or at least, the sexual tension is introduced a bit early, and you have the option to pursue that line of dialogue across many conversations with her and these conversations are actually more in number than the ones you get with Liara and Kaidan. Perhaps this is because ME conversations are voiced in its entirety, but if you don't consider the idea that Femshep and Kaidan/Liara talk outside of the conversations you already have with them then the romances seems rushed and a bit unnatural. It goes from, "I like talking to you," to "I love you." It's a bit sudden. However, my headcanon has helped with this significantly, and I really can't imagine taking the romances at face value.
Deltakarma wrote...
Now that you mention Shep's Spacer background, which is my favorite, imagine Liara meeting Hannah Shepard......

There is this one however I feel that Hannah Shepard wouldn't actually act as she does in this fic. I highly doubt that a Paragon Spacer Shep is as alien friendly as they are on their own. It's funny, but I view it as a crack fic. Besides, the conversation with your mother in ME1 indicates that she's a very empathetic person. Certainly where a Paragon Shep would get it from, and I find it hard to believe that MomShep would be as blind to Shepard's feelings as she is here.
I would love to see a different take on this. If I ever got my present fics in order, I'd probably try one on this subject. Speaking of the comic, do you think you could find it? I'd love to see it, if you remember the tags for it.
