Well, I've been away from this thread for a couple of days, only occasionally peeking in to try and keep up. Seems I've missed a few interesting topics...
I did take the time to read Rae's '... can wait' fanfics (and subsequently some of her others as well) and all I can say is 'WOW!'. They were really amazing... passionate, hot, tasteful, well paced and, maybe most importantly, totally faithful to the characters we've come to know from the games (at least to how me and probably most of us here have come to interpret them). I also didn't get the impression they were in any way overly explicit - even the most descriptive and explicit parts aren't there just for the hell of it, rather they help to portray the passion and intimacy between Liara and Shep. Really an amazing read, thanks to everyone for linking and recommending them (I'd thank the author for writing them, but guess she'll never read this).
I will definitely be incorporating these scenes into my own mental vision of what joining with an asari would feel like

.
Now to chip in on the whole femShep/broShep + Liara thing...
Speaking for myself, as a guy, I have no problems playing RPGs as either a male or female character. I played both ME1 and ME2 multiple times as broShep (custom or default), usually romancing Liara and only going with Ash and Tali once, for the sake of curiosity. The Ash playthrough was pre-ME2 and Tali was on one of my first ME2 runs (soon after release, so way before LotSB). I did like the Tali romance in ME2 a lot, she was my second favourite character even in ME1 and she had some really touching scenes in ME2. Of course, after LotSB there was no way of ever going with anyone but Liara

Then one time I decided to give femShep a try and while she sounded a bit odd at first, me being used to broShep, she quickly grew on me and by the time I'd finished that playthrough I had pretty much come to think of Shepard as a woman. A good deal of that has to do with the fact I loved Jennifer Hale's voice a lot better; not bashing Meer, I still love his broShep, I just connected better with Hale's more emotional interpretation. I think the latter may also be why I found femShep and Liara to have better chemistry together.
And now, after playing from ME1 through to ME3 with femShep, all in the span of about a month, and with ME3 being as emotionally involving as it was, I think I honestly couldn't switch back to broShep. I think that experience of taking her through all three games in a short time has seared into my mind the idea that my Shep is a woman.
Speaking about the other players - I think it's partially do to broSheps having more and better choices, especially with two very popular romance options in ME2 (Tali and Miranda). femSheps on the other hand seem to only have one really popular choice, Garrus; Jacob is just kind of bland and uninteresting and Thane, while intriguing is terminally ill.
The other part of the reason I think is, that while female players (that play femShep) might be somewhat more split between Liara and Garrus (and to a lesser extent Thane... we can probably ignore the two Jacobmancers), the male femShep players are probably way more likely to go with Liara. That could be because they consider Garrus more of a best bro than a romance or because they feel weird romancing a guy or something else entirely.
It would be interesting to see Bioware's statistical data on these issues (how many male/female players play as bro/femShep, how many of which romance which NPC, how many of which stay faithful, etc.
