And the lines after that scene and the stupid nightmare:

Is that from the lower right (more optimistic) option? On my recent playthrough I picked the upper right (lingering doubts) one, and wished I hadn't (because Liara had gotten my Shep more confident that they could succeed, not to mention what she had to fight for now). I think it was just instinct for a paragon to go upper right.

Since we already got a "Destroy/Control all reapers or turn everyone into a cyborg"-device popping out of nowhere that somehow solves the "synthetics destroying all organic life"-problem that was mentioned by an unquestionable starchild that suddenly appears right at the end of the trilogy out of a totaly illogical and unexplained nowhere:

Some kind of an ancient long forgotten "Give 400 years of your asari-lifespan to your bondmate"-meld is not too far-fetched.

It's before the dialogue choice.

Here. No dialogue choice to get that.

Ok, maybe she said it and I just can't remember (was getting a little emotional, damn scene!). Or maybe it's based on something earlier.

Started replaying (briefly, before moving to Max Payne 3) my maleshep/Tali playthrough and noticed that, since I told Liara 'no' on the Normandy, that on Eden Prime Shepard doesn't get the option for the 'good thing we brought our Prothean expert along' line. Wasn't aware that was romance-only dialogue.

I think also what followed it was something different then what had happened previously; something special. Previous ME romance scenes were sort of 'softcore' but in the one in ME3, with Liara, it was 'making love' and you could tell it was an important moment for the two. And not even just the sex: the kiss afterwards and the one earlier as well ('flatterer') were both indicative of a couple SO in love, so comfortable with eachother and SO happy and content. They were perfect moments that perfectly illustrated what they mean to eachother.

EDIT: And I'm even more sure they 'joined' in that scene. I don't think there had to be any tacite agreement, it was a mutually understood desire. The repeated talk of 'blue babies', spending the rest of their lives together, not being able to cope without eachother... I think that final, defining commitment signaled it was the right time.

You know, it's moments like those that's also ... sad / worrying. Because Liara will outlive Shepard. Sometimes I wonder if she would go at the same time as Shepard or stay on. ... I can't imagine Liara not suffering a tremendous breakdown.

Wonder why I bring up such a sad matter but well, it just popped up again. Image IPB

P.S. I think this is one couple whose fate I'm kinda happy and sad about.

This is just the "lifespan discussion" you hear the Turian complaining about with his Asari wife in ME2. It's something almost every Asari has to deal with, unless they fall for a Krogan or another Asari. Liara will be devastated when Shepard dies, yes...but it's something she'll be strong enough to deal with, especially if Shepard dies naturally and peacefully, instead of being torn from her unexpectedly like happened the first time because of the Reapers in ME2.

It's the kind of thing an entire part of her culture has been training her to deal with. And she will no doubt have that lifespan talk with Shepard sometime, and they will both come to terms with it - Liara will do the Asari thing and enjoy what time they do have together, instead of dwelling on that she will still be relatively young when Shepard dies of old age.

Personally, I like to think my Shepard would encourage Liara to move on, after he dies. Kindof like Cortez's husband did - my Shepard wouldn't want to be an anchor holding Liara back from living her life. It's selfish and mean to ask her not to love anyone else after he dies, and he'd encourage her to attempt to move on, keep living her life and enjoying herself, don't deprive herself of love just because Shepard is dead - grieve about it, remember Shepard, but don't let it ruin the rest of her life. Especially since Liara will probably be around 200 or in her 200's when Shepard dies, maybe 300's because of the cyborg parts of Shepard possibly increasing his lifespan - so if she lets it ruin her, that's literally the vast majority of her life she would spend depriving herself of love, and that's incredibly tragic and not something my Shepard would wish to inflict on her.

That's really interesting, I had no idea that was romance only. Keep us updated on what else you see on your playthrough like that.

Will do. FYI, I got some line along the lines of: 'this was a great catch', or something. To which i think Liara just replied with an 'agreed', or something like that.

While I agree that Liara will be able to deal with it (after a period of grieving) since it is expected and a part of being an asari, as I said earlier I don't think she would move on with someone else. At least to me that would really make their relationship seem a lot less valuable. I don't think she would need someone else to be happy after Shepard is gone, at least not if they started a family together. I don't think Liara being alone after Shepard dies is tragic, for my Shep/Liara, she has the memory of many amazing years together to look back at, and both children and eventually grandchildren to keep her company.

I don't see that happening. Liara shouldn't deprive herself of love for the rest of her life only because Shepard isn't able to provide that for her during his/her relatively short lifespan. Of course, I believe that a man/woman like Shepard would still hold a special place in Liara's heart, and I don't think she'll love anyone else like him/her, but that doesn't mean that she won't try to find happiness to fill that emptiness she might feel afterwards. That's what Shepard would want from her. She'd do it for him/her. Pure memory will not satisfy her for long. She's not a drell; she won't be able to find comfort from memories alone and it would become harder to do so with time.

I just can't agree with this. Sure, many asari obviously move on with other people if they bond with a short lived species, but I have no doubt many don't, especially when in a truly meaningful relationship. I'm sure your Shepard's relationship with Liara is different, but I don't see Liara finding someone else, after Shepard dies (my estimate is at ca 250 years) I see her being with her family and eventually taking on the responsibilities of a Matriarch.

Dead.
Shepard is dead.
I killed her.

I delayed her. Because...because I didn't want to leave her. Because I loved her. Because I love her. Why didn't I listen to her when she ordered me to leave? Those extra moments I delayed could have made a difference!

When Liara heard Joker's recount of the final moments of Shepard's life, her torment over losing Shepard heightened. Before arriving at the hospital, Joker told the survivors that Shepard was mere seconds away from joining him in the escape pod before a final blast from the enemy ship's cannon expelled the still living, breathing Commander out into the vacuum of space.

Seconds I stole from her, because I was selfish!

(JLB's fic)

That just came to my mind.

-

In my headcanon Liara won't search for someone after Shepard dies. She'll just live her life as a matriarch, caring for her children. And joined bondmates, they both have a part of each other inside them, forever.
There's lots of people around who never go for another relationship after their long love dies, they don't need a "replacement", that's their own choice.

Edit:

It all depends on the circumstances. If Liara does find somebody she could love and would want to, she shouldn't hold back because of Shepard. I'm not saying she would go hunting for somebody or anything, in fact, I'm convinced that at first she'll set her mind that she won't. However, love is not exactly something you can plan in advance. If it happens, it happens, and Shepard would let Liara know that if it does, she shouldn't feel guilty or anything of the kind.

About Liara moving on, IDK. She has never been with anyone besides Shepard. Shepard was her first partner and first love. Love at first sight, soul mates. Even if you break it off with her (or never romance her) she never gets with anyone else. And I think the the bonding, knowing Shepard's consciousness as well as she knows her own, having the children, spending half her life (to that point) with Shepard; I can see her not really wanting to move on. I mean, she'll deal with Shepard's passing but I can see her having little interest in finding someone else. I can see Liara throwing herself into her work (probably some high-up diplomatic position or something) and enjoying their children. I see the her connection with Shepard, through the joining, being a little similar to Keiji's greybox (although perhaps not as vivid): I think Liara could relive her memories of Shepard whenever she wished; hear her voice, smell her hair, feel her touch. I think that, her work, her children and (probable) grandchildren would keep her happy.

And I don't think my Shepard, or any Shepard really, would ever ask Liara to stay alone. And I don't think Liara would take her life when Shepard dies. But I can see her choosing, on her own, to not be with someone else. And I think this mainly comes down to their special connection: Liara being a maiden when they met, Shepard's loyalty and devotion (and Liara's), what they went through together, the bonding, the children, Shepard and Liara's personalities, being eachother's entire worlds... change any one or two of these and I might see it different. But as it stands...

EDIT: And I think Liara is unique in this among the LIs. I can easily see any of the others moving on if they lost Shepard (and they even have shorter life spans).

Yeah, alright, I can accept that, I just really doubt she would fall for someone. At least my Liara won't! :P

Random thought: Anyone else like the idea of one of Shepard and Liara's daughters (For me they'll probably have 3-4 children) falling in love with Mordin? (Wrex and Eve's firstborn, if Eve gets her will through (and we all know she will )).

Ha! If Liara and Eve play matchmakers, then they probably will, yes, I like the idea - and since Krogan can live as long as Asari, then their love would last for the rest of their lives. Think of the stories they'll be able to share with others, having such cool parents!

The Importance of Words

Touching. :/ It's about the asari widow sidemission on the Citadel. It's quite right about Shep/Liara.

Someone linked it here before but I'm just going trough my backlog of fanfics that I've saved from this thread and thought that it's worth linking again.

Yeah, this is what I'm getting at. It's not cheapening the relationship she had with Shepard at all, it's about Liara not torturing herself for the rest of her life because of it. And it's not that I think other relationships will hold up to Shepard's, but, as Theo says, love is love, and sometimes it just happens. It's cruel and selfish to ask Liara to never love again after Shepard's death - think about the timespan, that's 700-800 years you are asking Liara to remain alone.

I mean, do you think Cortez's relationship with his husband was cheapened because he can move on? I don't at all - and what I'm talking about is a situation almost exactly like that - it's all about Shepard not wanting Liara to make him an anchor.
