My problem with the renegade responses is it's usually Shepard acting angry or like he disapproves of Liara. Really, you can't salvage the Illium encounter, it's just awful all the way around. There's nothing at all satisfying with Liara until LotSB.

Exactly - the biggest problem with pre-LotSB ME2 was that Shepard couldn't have a meaningful discussion with Liara as to how the two of them stand or simply ask why she acts the way she does, and maybe try to bring the old Liara back through words, and eventually rekindle the relationship. What we had instead was either being angry at her (not wanting anything to do with her) or being completely indifferent and simply go about our business with finding Thane and Samara.

Agreed.
It really bugs me that there is no grateful option, I don't know what is worst being angry at or indifferent to Liara Posted Image.

But on the bright side if the cameo had been better LotSB might not have been so fantastic or perhaps even been at all.

I don't really know, I would have to read the Codex again. Or I ask around: Can Reapers read the thoughts and memories of their indoctrinated victims?
I honestly have no idea. LoL

As far as I remember, anything an indoctrinated victim knows the Reapers know as well.

Thanks, I needed that little tidbit of information.

My problem with renegade responses are that you never know if Shepard is going just a bit angry or downright evil. I don't feel like quicksaving before every convo, especially if they come as a surprise, so I've missed loads of dialogue that might've been actually great.

This. Especially when it comes to talking to Liara, I wouldn't want to take the risk.

I always save before talking to Liara, just in case I needed to reload. i went a step further in my latest playthrough of ME3 where I have a save before every single one of her dialogues, actually the only saves I have in playthrough are before talking with her Posted Image.

But even despite this I have yet to see the Renegade responses from Ilium, I just could not get myself to possibly be mean to Liara.

I don't have anything against the Illium encounter (as long as there is LotSB later on ofc). I think it does a good job of showing how consumed Liara is by her work and how after two years it's hard to adjust to Shepard being back.

Oh, yeah, I always quicksave before every conversation so that I can go back if I don't like an option I picked. Some conversations I even go through several times with different combinations of answers until I feel the conversation suits my Shepard as well as possible.

Really? Doesn't Benezia state that a small part of her mind was closed of from Saren so that she could give the information about the conduit to Shepard? I would imagine that the Reaper wouldn't be able to know that....Benezia IS a powerful Matriarch and i would think that she might be able to fight them off that small part in her mind.

It’s just lots of contradictory information. The only thing that we have direct knowledge of is Paul Grayson, and he wasn’t indoctrinated as such, it was a very rapid nanite process using some Cerberus modifications no less. The Reapers had almost direct access to his thoughts, but not quite.

I think the cop-out about too much indoctrination making the person stupid counts here; most victims aren’t merely puppets, because they’d be useless to the Reapers – and obviously they can’t know ahead of time what someone does or does not know to decide whether they wish to ‘expend’ the utility of the person.

I've taken to doing this too on my second run with certain Sheps in ME3!

Not every dialogue but definitely the ones where something references the romance (Mars, 1st time back on Normandy, Citadel, B4 (and on) Cerberus HQ, 'gift', etc). I was a little annoyed that I forgot to leave a save before the Liara/Aethyta dialogues. On that note, I'm not sure which version of the romance line there I like more:

"And how many times have you thrown her on the bed and peeled her out of her uniform?"

or

"I’ve seen the way you look at each other. I’m surprised your panties havn’t caught fire."

I remember the last one, for me, came after a few playthroughs and was with a Shep that had either never romanced or totally put a stop to it with Liara. Nearly spat my drink when it happened! Not so much because of the non-romance but because of the (er, *cough*) vivid) language, lol.

But this follows another scene I absolutely LOVE. The one with Aethyta where you get to be all protective over Liara. That was SO in-character for my Shep (oh how many other scenes have I called for dialogue along those lines!), and I love the way it mirrored Aethyta a little and how she realises Shepard cares and is good enough for Liara.

Looking back at the quotes. I wonder why I have no quotes from Shepard from ME1? :?

In my case it is because most of the sweet lines in ME1 are said by Liara, the only one I really liked from Shepard there is as said the "you were amazing" one.

Was disappointed Shepard wasn't more protective of Liara on Illium. There aren't many empathetic responses to the various things Liara sees and goes through. When Liara gets thrown by Kai Leng, nothing (my response was different). And when they lose, it's Liara comforting Shepard (gentle touch to back) and I remember on my most recent playthrough thinking: "that scene would make more sense to me if their roles were reversed". I've also always chosen the dialogue that says the asari were right to hide the beacon, as I don't want to add to Liara's woes Shepard criticizing her people. Post-mission is the worst though, Shepard barely comforts Liara. Too angry and self-centered (especially in the CIC scene). Tali & Garrus seem to care more, although I do love Tali's: "she just really needs you right now".

I blame this more on technical restraints than BW's writing but it still gripes.

I suppose you are right. Looking back at the ME1 part of their romance. I think my favorite dialog is when Liara is describing the union.

Funny. But not really worth being marked as an important quote for that game.

Romance both Tali and Liara. Then pick Liara in 3.

I suppose she wanted to humiliate Tali.

Been such a long time since I played it, I think that's the only line I remember word-for-word.

If you want important, maybe the dialogue where Liara is telling Shepard how young she is and heavily hinting she's a virgin. I think that's very important dialogue, in regards to the importance of the upcoming scene, their roles, and has definitely been something that's informed my view of their relationship since. Shepard being Liara's first (and only) is important, I think.
