I have to say that Traviss didn't rub on me like that, but then again i thought she did an excellent job fleshing out the Mandalorian culture in almost all of its aspects in the Republic Commando series while still writing a good multi-book story to fit in the SW universe.
I have to say that I found all of Traviss's books in LotF very poor. Her characterization of Caedus was reducing him to a simple psychopath with little thought to his motives of becoming a Sith lord. Denning and Allston were much better with Denning the best at Caedus in my opinion. To be honest, I really hate how the Star Wars EU does their series with multiple authors contributing. From book to book, no one can decide how they want to characterize anyone and it often creates characters that have only a few traits that are ridiculously exaggerated. It's very disjointed in the larger series with even more authors (I couldn't even finish NJO.) and everyone wants to include each of their own characters in each book and the entire thing comes off more as a bad fanfiction collaboration than anything else. Honestly, after I finished LotF, I've not touched another Star Wars book since. Well, with the exception of Drew's series which was great. That's the thing. When it's one author, it's good. It was much better with Zahn and others writing their own series pre-NJO, IMO.
Anyway, as for Traviss, on top of her poor characterization of the main antagonist, it is pretty well known that she is no fan of the Jedi and that came across as extremely obvious in her writing. She should have been able to write her books without the bias because it had no place in a series specifically about Jedi. I honestly think it was a mistake on the publisher's and Lucas Arts's part to include her. Not only does she kill off one of the most popular Jedi characters in the EU, she does it in a way that does not fit her character in any way, whatsoever. Poison, really? That Jedi used be a damn Sith spy. If you're going to kill her off, then at least do it in a way that doesn't hand her the Idiot Ball. Very disrespectful to the character.
Then we have her hi-jacking the plot so that
only a Mandalorian mentor can teach Jaina how to bring down Caedus. The explanation for this in-book was very poor and didn't make much sense. It really came across to the reader as: "You see, Caedus knows all kinds of Jedi and Sith tricks. All of them are nothing compared to the tactics of a Mandalorian." What? When did it happen that Jedi/Sith<Mandalorians? IIRC, the Mandalorians had a whole war given to them where they were spanked by Revan (ironically someone who was both a Jedi and Sith) and scattered across the galaxy.
Just... ugh. Look, I know that Traviss's specialty is Mandalorians. However, I think she let this specialty make her arrogant. She needs to stay in her own little niche and not write any plots that have Jedi or Sith in them because she really made it obvious to me that she has little respect for them overall.
Whew, well anyway, you should check out the Fanfic Writer Support Group. Good discussion going on there.
Here, a Liara pic to redeem this extremely off-topic post.
