Time for a new fanfic of my Thessian series! It's called Where You Belong, and I want to once again thank Aristobulus for all the help he provided during the making of this story - his insight, ideas, thoughts and suggestions - thank you so much! :)

As most of you probably know the Shepard/Liara stories I usually write are AU, taking place about a year after the defeat of the Reapers where the StarChild/Colored explosions/Plot holes/Normandy running away and all that fun stuff has not happened.

It's just one more glimpse of Shepard and Liara's life on Thessia, their relationship and the new wonders of the planet that Shepard gets to see during a trip they have together amidst the nature of the asari homeworld.

Thank you if you take the time to read it, and I'd love to hear your thoughts as always!

I have to say, Theo's outdone himself on this one. Beautiful. Someone please buy me a one-way ticket to Thessia... stat.

Thank you so much, and for your review! I'd be on the next plane (well, next space shuttle) bound for Thessia if I could - it is a beautiful enough planet in the game itself, to say nothing of how exquisite and alien it could really be when you venture out beyond the cities, which I think are a marvel by themselves!

My post is gonna have a bit of spoilers for Theo's fic and assume you've read it, so skip over my post if you intend to read it and haven't. I will just say for those that haven't, you definitely should read his fics, especially this one. They are very good.

I absolutely love the amount of world building you do for the Asari and Thessia, Theo. Each one of your stories is a very impressive look at another part of Asari culture - and life on Thessia - that the games only hint at.

The views you describe that Shepard gets to see are absolutely magnificent, and extremely exotic, and just - what's more impressive is you succeeded in describing a scene that is just immediately alien, too. This couldn't happen on Earth, and you know this very soon into the scene, and it just makes it really...very interesting. I find myself really wishing I was an artist so I could attempt to recreate scenes and landscapes you describe in your stories - especially this new one.

The beach itself - with Liara there in the setting sunlight - and the view of the alien night sky over the beach, reflected on the still alien ocean like a mirror - would make particularly good pictures I think.

I love your choice of colors when describing the fauna and various natural elements - the tint and clarity of the water, the plants, animals, etc. I love how you've incorporated Eezo into much of the natural Thessian world too. It's very hard to not see the new things you've created and named - like the animals, the foods, and everything - not fitting in perfectly well with established lore and canon too, it all just makes so much sense. There's a lot of thought put into everything to make sure it does fit in.

But you do an equally good job portraying Shepard and Liara, and just the intensity of the love and respect in their relationship. You've still managed to have their relationship be a very equal one, and I really like that. Like, one of the small touches I really like is how when they meet that Salarian and he asks if he can photo them and such, they both want to say yes, but both of them take the time to look at the other and make sure both are fine with it, neither one of them blurts out a "Yes" without checking with the other. That, and just the general way they talk to eachother portrays a very respectful, deep love.

And of course Shepard/Liara's daughter. Her name is hard to spell and hard to pronounce but I think it's a fitting Asari name, flows well even if I mess it up. Image IPB

What I like about her is how her characteristics make sense for what an Asari infant might be like - it's not just a tiny adult as you see in the Stargazer scene (ugh) and even some fanart of Asari babies. And her attitude, even for a baby, shows off traits of Liara - the way she inquisitively stares at everything instead of getting scared or something, it's a neat touch.

Overall, I just love what you do with Thessia and Liara/Shep and you're amazing at capturing every reason that makes the Asari my favorite race and Liara my favorite character and also why I think she's the best LI for a paragon Shep. Everything you write is just so spot on.

The Asari, like all of the aliens in Mass Effect, sort of get portrayed (if unintentionally) in the game as this monolithic group with a single culture. The game doesn't actually say they're a single culture, it just never delves into any cultural differences between different city-states. That is a staple with Sci Fi aliens as creating different cultures for the aliens would require too much exposition (outside of fanfic) that detracts from the main story. But realistically, would they have a single culture?

Like early human history you'd still have Asari who spent centuries or millenia seperated from other groups by rivers, oceans, mountains, and deserts. Like on Earth, that probably should have resulted in many different cultures and languages developing across the globe. While the effects of globilization would likely be felt to a greater degree on Thessia than modern Earth, I'd still bet on there being different cultures on Thessia.

*If* there are different cultures on Thessia, just as Tokyo and London and Mexico City are all very different from each other, Armali and Serrice may share similar differences.

I think there definitely were more defined and different cultures on Thessia in the distant past - but the Asari have been spacefaring and maintaining a leading role in a galactic community for ages. I think that would have a large role in homogenizing the Asari's culture on Thessia into a more singular global culture, especially as time goes on.

So I think in the present in the setting, Asari culture mostly depends on how built up and diverse the area is. Basically, I think you'll more see a difference in culture between say, a melting pot city that they intend for other races to come and be tourists at and visit, and live at too, if they wish, and cities that are almost strictly Asari, and then those will be different too from entirely rural areas that are strictly Asari.

@Aristobulus500:

Thank you so much - both for your help and for your thoughts on the fic. I'm trying not to make anything conflict with something that has been established in the lore so that it can be easily integrated - hence why I often look up things in the wiki to make sure that I'm not contradicting anything, and why I often ask questions here before I proceed with something since I do have to work within the confines of what is already defined and explore on those things that aren't, so that the two of them can work together.

Actually something I failed to mention before - I think that the ending scene could very well work mostly because of the lack of pollution on Thessia and because of the lack of moon so there wouldn't be any sunlight reflected, and you would manage to get an even clearer glimpse of it all. I do think that such a view is completely possible to be seen from Thessia.

@Han Shot First:

We do know from the lore that there are different asari religions even to this date, so I believe that there's still some diversity there. I like to think that there are a lot of languages like on Earth, but with time, a dominant one has emerged - like English here - but with the translators I doubt anyone has problems understanding one another, even though they might be speaking in different tongues - it can apply for people from the same species, I guess, not just for people from other ones.

Speaking of Asari and culture, my personal head canon for why we never learn Samara's last name is that unlike Liara she doesn't have one. There are some cultures on Earth where people do not have last names (common in some regions of Afganistan, for instance) so why not Thessia as well?

I simply think that honorifics take the place, somewhat like you’ll refer to Dame Helen rather than Helen Mirren, Dame (or whatever).

Thereby we have Matriarch Benezia [T’Soni], Matriarch Lidanya [Te Aras], Justicar Samara [Homisos], Councilor Tevos [T’Mion]… I invent surnames for everyone, too, but they’re really just background info in the D.P.

That is a good point about religion. While longer periods of globalization on Thessia probably have created a lot less cultural diversity than modern Earth, I imagine there being some regional differences in food, language, art, architecture, or musical tastes. There might also be some cultural differences between different Asari planets. We know that the people of Illium for example have at least one large cultural difference with other Asari: the acceptance of slavery. Or perhaps it is more accurate to say that the people of Illium have more laissez faire attitude in general  (narcotics sales, weapons trafficking, ect) than other Asari.

I like the last names you came up with. They all have a nice ring to them and seem plausible as Asari surnames.

Any thoughts on what the T' in T'Loak or T'Soni might represent? There was discussion in one of the Liara threads months (or years?) back where some theories were put forward.

I think it is an amazing picture thought there is something subtle about the face that I think is slightly off. She is missing her freckles, her crest is not as light as normal and her eyes don't appear to be their beautiful blue, perhaps it is just that. Though it is an astounding piece nonetheless IMO.

That is an amazing piece of art! Reminds me of the original comic cover, and just as good. I love the stylized interpretation of liara.

This is awesome. I love how Liara is casually reclining with a drink in her hand. It makes her seem very sophisticated, which to me fits with her as the Shadow Broker. And Shep's grin with the cigar hanging out is just plain badass.

Finished a second video, please check it out!

Liara T'Soni Tribute - Your Call

That was a great video. I have to say Secondhand Serenade has a few songs on my Shep & Liara playlist including that one. The song worked really well with the clips and setting the tone for the clips. Had to save it to my favorites on Youtube so I can watch it any time on my phone.

Hi all! I haven't been on the BSN in ages. I used to lurk around this thread pretty heavily back in the day. :)

Anywho, I'm not sure if they've been posted here yet, but for all you Liara/Femshep fans out there, I figured you might be interested in a few fics I've written about them.

The first one being Love is a Battlefield. This was second ever fic I've written. It's about poor Shepard dealing with the wrath of a pregnant Liara when she says a few things one should never say to a pregnant lady. :)

The second is Swimming Pool. I've never been a big fan of first-person in writing, but I don't think I could have written this any other way. It's just Shepard musing about Liara and how they got to the point they are.

The third is Priority: Vacation. I started this on a whim. I wanted to give Shepard the vacation she deserves... so Shepard, Liara, and their daughter embark on a mission with Shepard's old crew to an island getaway. Only two chapters up... working on the third right now. :)

I really hope you guys enjoy them!

I will definitely be stopping by this thread more often now. I almost forgot how much of a hoot you all are! :D

Loved the stories you wrote. Especially loved Love is a Battlefield.. Can't wait to read part 2 of Priority: Vacation...

@speedy: Thanks! I was looking for something to do a Liara tribute to and when I heard that version of Your Call I saw half the video in my head, which is a great sign.

I think I'm going to wait for the DLC to come out before I do anymore, but you never know when inspiration is going to hit!

Off Topic: Sifting through my mass effect comics and books the other day, I decided to give Redemption another read through and I forgot how much they deviated from Liara's character alot in it. It kinda annoyed me how reckless and uncontrollable at times Liara became when she and Feron were hunting for Shep's body. Not going into the obvious non-recognisable Liara we got in the artwork, not even bothered to give her her trademark freckles but the way Liara had to be reined in by Feron alot, I couldn't buy that.<_< At crucial moments Liara let her personal feelings get the better of her and this almost resulted in her blowing their cover on a few occasions. Nah that's not the Liara I know anyway.

Yes I understand Liara is desperate to repay the favour to Shep in retrieving his/her body, watching Shep get spaced and not being able to help, she sees this as her redemption. Shepard was more than her C.O. he/she was her friend/LI and finding his/her body would have gave Liara peace of mind. But I couldn't see those understandable emotions clouding her better judgement in such a crucial espionage mission like this.<_< Liara is probably one of the most level headed characters in the game, as an asari I guess such wisdom is part of her makeup but in Redemption they made Liara overly aggressive and excessive at times, Liara is anything but.

I liked her dialogue with Miranda at the end and how she feared what they are attempting to do to Shep's remains is like something the collectors would attempt, how playing God is not the right thing to do and if they should just let the dead rest. I really wished they added a few more pages of dialogue between these two back at Cerberus HQ. Or better yet when Liara boarded the Normandy in ME2, it would have been awesome if these two had a quick word or something, what they did, you could hardly forget.

Good thing Lair of The Shadow Broker fleshed out her demons more and let us truly understand the pain she had to endure at the hands of the Shadow Broker. It is still to this day probably one of the best DLC's I've ever played.:D

I really think the guilt about handing Shepard over to Cerberus was not really adressed,, it only comes up if you did not get the "I couldn't let you go". Otherwise LOTSB does not really bother to focus on that one aspect.
