One of the things I like about Liara is how Bioware created the perfect level of awkward shyness with her, but then countered it by having her be a powerful biotic, very intelligent (I can't have been the only one who noticed the certificate from the university of Thessia in her apartment as an example) and later in the romance, kinda assertive how when she tells Shepard flat out that she doesn't feel it would be right to have sex (or was it meld, I can't remember). Of course, she can't help herself en route to Ilos, but still.

I don't know if I'd call Liara 'shy', per se.  I think her reasoning for seeking out a life of solitude wasn't because she couldn't deal with other people, but rather because she was tired of it.  The daughter of a matriarch (expectations abound), being a young intellectual (never respected) with wildly unpopular academic opinions, and a pureblood to boot (hurray for prejudice) means she's probably had to put up with a lot of crap her whole life, and it's simply easier to seek out the solitude of her studies than continue to deal with it.

Granted fleeing instead of dealing with things is one of the signs of shyness, but when Shepard or anyone else presses her she stands her ground and even presses back.  That's the aspect of her personality that I like the most.

This is one of the oddest?  Not Thane/Grunt?  Jack/Tali?  Aside from your own issues with trusting Miranda, what is it about her that makes you think Liara wouldn't get along with her?  I think a non-romanced Liara could definitely do worse than Miranda Lawson.

It's more I don't see Miranda being attracted to Liara.  Than Liara not being attracted to Miranda.  That is what I find odd.  I just don't see Miranda with anyone that isn't human.

Oh and let's not forget liara's father situation! Can't they do a Billy Elliott situation instead? Thane wanted to be a dancer but his hanar 'parents' wanted him to be an assassin. Daddy issues is common in games. Kane and lynch, fallout 3, fear and the list goes on. Anyway it's a liara thread, not going to derail. Just imagine me posting a picture of Liara giggling while Shepard scrubs her scalp ( I cant post photos).

Well, Miranda's's pro-human, but she's also very appreciative of asari culture and downright fangirlish about the STG. She and Liara are both brilliant introverts who could be each other's intellectual match. They're also loyal beyond all reason to those they care for and don't give up or admit they're wrong easily. If you're saying there's no evidence she's a xenophile, well there's no evidence she isn't either.

That has never been BW's strong point, and I hate it as well. I'm little worried what they're gonna do with Morrigan's child when many people haven't even done it with her. I sure hope people who did it with her get something extra, and the people who decided to take the book during the ending of WH will get something special. And as for Merrill, GWAAAAAAH, SHE'S SO NAMNAM:wub: . But being serious now, I just really like her. I think I have a weakness for girls like her (no wonder since I like Liara as much too). I never choose the rival with her. Yeah it's good when you want to protect her, but just like with Liara, I trust her. I trust that she can handle what she's doing, and my Hawke will always be there if she needs any help.

And derp about Thane crying? So what if he cried, he still was the best written character of all the squadmates in ME2.

Seems like you just like Merrill's personality or you don't. I kinda like Merrill and often she makes a remark and I facepalm in front of my PC and I say: " *Sighs* Merrill...". Still I think her extreme level of social and human awkwardness is cute and adorable, especially when Isabella or Varric is in your party. Top it off by stopping her from using blood magic and get into a rivalmance and she's a really nice character.

Kind of reminds me just a little about Liara although Liara is still very social, though not used to humans. And of course she's very intelligent, among other positive traits.

When I first played DA2, the LI I picked was Merrill, because she reminded me of Liara at first.

However, as the game went on, the differences between the two characters began to make themselves clear.

For instance, they pulled the "cutsey" card so many times with Merrill that eventually I became numb to its charm, it felt like they were trying to write a thirteen year old who was inexplicably Merrill's age. More than that, both charaters share a social awkwardness, but sometimes Merrill comes off as --I don't know how to put this kindly-- simply stupid during certain situations.

I never felt that Liara was ever stupid.

My canon Shepard (who romanced Liara obviously) is quite similar to Miranda in personality so to me Miranda/Liara makes sense. I think Liara could break down some of the walls Miranda puts up. We already know that one of the only people Miranda trusted pre-Shepard was an asari (her contact on Illium) so she's obviously not racist like some members of Cerberus. I love jtav's Liara/Miranda fics so will have to check this new one out.

What's with the Merrill hate? Merrill is quite a lot like Liara, they're both socially awkward around humans, both interested in the past, both have powerful magic (I'd argue Liara and Merrill are ME and DA2's most powerful squaddies respectively).

I really wished in DA2 characters would react to the Blood Mage and Templar specialisations. It seemed really stupid that Fenris and Anders would whinge about Merrill's blood magic when Hawke was also a blood mage (not that that Templars ever noticed).

DA is funny that way. I always found it weird you could actually make Wynne a blood mage in Origins:blink:

Yes that was strange indeed. I can understand Merrills behaviour in Act 1 and Act 2, but by the time of Act 3, she's spent so much time in Kirkwall (if romanced she even lived in hightown for 3 years) that she should become less socially awkward.

Same with Anders during Awakening, then you hear him whine about blood mages in DA2 left me feeling HUH?!?!   I had used the save file I had Anders as a blood mage. 

I rather be the healer when I play as a mage.

Comparing sort of badass Thane with Whiny Carth isn't fair and you know it!

Just to clarify, I do not hate Merrill. For instance, I really like her personal quest line, they provoked a real emotional reaction from me. However, her maturity during these quests is not continued during the rest of the game where she doesn't seem to act her age.

I'd probably like Merrill a lot more if she were actually an underaged character, I think that would make more sense, the way she's written.

Liara on the other hand is socially awkward, but I never got the feeling that she was a girl, if you know what I mean.
