Correct. For being shy about approaching Shepard, Liara isn't shy at all about fending off competition.

As I understand it, there is a distinction between a "true union" and an "ordinary melding." The union on the other hand, is when two separate people link their minds to share feelings, memories, and experiences rather than just information. I guess my personal interpretation of the asari view of intimacy builds on this hierarchy to include physical intimacy to whatever degree.

(For whatever reason, I tend to refer to the 'union' as the 'meld,' and to a regular, mental information exchange as the 'joining,' so if that confused anyone, in my earlier posts, I apologize).

@Akernis: Perhaps I've been misinterpreting what Liara says when she tells Shepard that "the union is more than just sex," but honestly, I don't see any reason to think that physical and (for lack of a better term) mental virginity are equivalent. From what I remember of her description of the union, physical contact isn't necessary, and given the degree of intimacy that the union ostensibly creates, I tend to imagine that what we would term 'sex' is viewed more casually by the asari.

That said, the question you raise about whether the asari have sex as we understand it, is interesting. It's a bit anthropocentric to assume that their anatomy is the same as a human female's, or that they have a concept of physical intimacy that is similar to ours. (For what it's worth though, I don't personally view sex as an act requiring participants of opposite sexes, but that depends on how an individual defines sex, I suppose).

Those were writers that wanted to do whatever they wanted with established characters, too. And it doesn't work.

hey not all of the Star Wars EU went against the movies.  I always thought that Timothy Zahn did a remarkable job and most of the novels/games that featured wholly new characters with either no or bit parts by the originals were pretty good too.

Yes, there is no need for sex in order to meld, but regarding physical contact you should consider the following things:
- Sha'Ira only has sex with Shep when he/she indicates that her reward is not enough
- The Asari stripper in Samaras Loyaltymission and her refusal to have sex with that turian
- Samaras refusal when Shepard tried to kiss her
It's quite obvious that they view sex in a way very similar to humans.

Regarding Liara there is nothing that implies that she had sex before ME1, on the other hand there are some things which suggest she never had:
- She is a pureblood and not happy/proud of it (any teen-interactions with other asari very unlikely)
- She isolates herself from others (she tells Shep that it is a reason why she likes digsites like Therum)
- Her behaviour, especially her weak social skills (in ME1)

Additionally Kaidan comments on Liara beeing 'bookish', which pretty much includes 'not interested in casual sex'.

I never saw Liara as being ashamed of being a pureblood, by the way. Sure, she laments the fact that such bigotry exists, and seems saddened that the asari feel the need to discriminate in such a manner, but I don't think she views herself as an aberration or anything.

IRL, when a member of a persecuted minority becomes distressed or angered when they are abused, they are not doing so because they see themselves as the problem.

No I don't think she was ashamed of it but like anything that could have caused torment or bullying when young it's clearly uncomfortable for her to talk about. I always got the sense that the mere mention of the word really cuts her, brings up a past that she tries to put behind her.

I don't think bonding is anything actually related to their mental abilities, isn't bonding simply the act of becoming bondmates?

Back in ME2 when you ask TIM what your old crew was doing, he lies about Liara and says she's working for the SB. The accepted explanation for that in this group is because that TIM wants to create distrust and reasons for Shepard to not seek out his old team, especially someone with resources like Liara, thereby making it easier to isolate him and thereby manipulate him. And also because he does not wish Shepard to seek out Liara since it could cause distraction, either with Shepard trying to help Liara with the SB problem or have Shepard be unfocused emotionally after seeing Liara.

Thats about it right?

Just asking because I am currently writing about this, and while this is my interpretation I wonder if anyone got another view on it I may not have thought of.
