I’d probably have gone with ‘and’ rather than ‘or’, but sure. It’s often hard to tell what a certain person needs in a certain situation.

 I'm always quick to comfort Liara, even if everything is about to be obliterated. Heck, I'm going to die, anyway. I might as well get what little pleasure I can out of hearing Ali Hillis' wonderful voice!

Rather than the "I knew you'd think of something", which seems too glib, I'd go for something more on the lines of "remember, I'm/your friends are (depending on romance) here for you.", with a hand on her shoulder. To make it clear that you are available for hugs/shoulders to cry on if she wants them later.

That would have really fit the scene and comfort it.

Eugh. Sorry, just…eugh. I guess that works if she’s your friend or long-time aquaintance And I don’t even consider myself a particularly touchy-feely person.

Hopefully none of us have to ever comfort a lover whose home planet was taken over by hostile aliens.

How do you feel about a desperate hug, wracked with tears, Liara's sobs, and shuddering bodies as Shepard steels herself and growls through clenched teeth while pushing liara's head with an almost bruising force against the side of her own - her lips hovering milimeters by the asari's ear "We will beat them Liara...  I swear to you - we will beat them."  A sharp shaky intake of breath follows before she continues, "We can't break yet.  We need to figure out our next move.  I need you t..."  Shepard's own voice begins to waver interupting her sentence, her eyes staring blankly at the wall ahead of her.  Her own thoughts greatly frazzled by defeat.
Liara's own teeth clench, body tense, trying to subdue another sob as she nods weakly "You are..right, helping the refugees... that is something I can..." again her voice fails her as she feels Shepard's grasp upon the side of her head weaken, allowing her to fall tiredly onto Shepard's shoulder again.  Wrapping her arms even tighter around her Commander, Liara's long elegant blue fingers turned a deeper shade of purple as the intensity of her tightening grasp balled up the fabrics of Shepard's uniform into her desperately clenched fists. 
"I'm sorry..." Shepard finally whispers - grudgingly surrendering to the silence of the Shadow Broker's chambers and the embrace while comfortingly caressing Liara's back and shoulders as another small sob echoes through the Liara's room.

hmm... still too touchy feely? ionno maybe it holds too much renegade undertone still.. bah...it needs work for the 45 seconds it took to write.
lol as you say - hoipefully none of us have to deal with comforting an alien LI when the galaxy faces it end.

Which isn't to say that Shepard shouldn't have been able to offer comfort - that's what I'd likely have done - just that I don't think it would have really helped at that point.

I think this post pretty much summarizes how I feel about that scene.

A hug wasn't enough, and Shepard knew that the best medicine for Liara right then was to lose herself in the work of helping the Thessian refugees. Liara is after all, a bit of a workaholic. Rather than seeing that as an example of Shepard being cold, I see it an example of him or her being caring by getting Liara to do something that would help her overcome the grief. It also shows that Shepard knows Liara well enough to also know what would snap her out of her despair.

That isn't to say that the scene couldn't have been paired with a paragon hug or some other form of consolation...in fact it should have had something 'extra' for those who had Liara as their LI. I just disagree that the pep talk itself portrays Shepard badly. Work was the best cure for Liara.

Yes she is!

I imagine she has been dancing before while in college, and probably after graduating as well. All of those fifty years couldn't have been spent with field work. She was most likely employed by a university or museum on Thessia.

Akernis you basically said most of the reasons why such a movie would be a huge fail and an insult toward Mass Effect. Even if eveything will be perfect, it still won't feel Mass Effect to the watcher, since every player has it's own 'Shepard', his own LI, and such. A movie after an RPG game is a really bad idea.  I really don't want to see any actress being Liara. I love her the way she is- in the game, and no other way. I don't want any actress to spoil Liara for me, even if it would be a top class actress.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Not at all.
