But I still firmly believe that a story can have an effective and well executed ending in which the hero dies in the end.

Not a Video Game though, you don't ever play a video game have your character die and say "I Won!". Death is the failure state never the success state and as an inevitable state it will always be uneffective and empty. Since your first thought is "What did I do wrong to be punished with this ending?"

And for happier subject matter:

Haven't played Red Dead Redemption?  Character dies and I didn't even see it coming.  You finish the last few missions playing as the son.

You can always make Alistair king, keep Loghain and make Loghain take the final blow.

You have to work and have meta knowledge for that one though.

I don't know about meta-knowledge on that one, I got it by accident after my one and only play where I set out to upset Alistair (didn't succeed very well, I like him too much).

Erm so back on-topic...

We've reached consensus on the ear thing, her sheer awesomeness keeps them on! Image IPB

Point is that there are options which I believe will be the case with the ME ending.
I'm looking forward to the Happy Ending.

Just because it is a video game does not mean that having an ending where the character dies in the end is bad. The hero's death can be symbolic or perhaps a noble sacrifice for a higher cause or something else entirely. If the story is well made, the characters good and the death of the main character meaningfull. Then the death of the protagonist can easily be a satisfying conclusion to a story.

I will be frank and say that I dislike Rockstar games. And most sandbox games in general (althrough I am willing to give Skyrim a chance).

So I have not played RDR.

It was a great ending and I hadn't read much about it before playing it, so I didn't know about the ending.

It gave me the same response I had when I saw the beginning of ME2 for the first time, I was like NOOOOOOoooooooooooooo!!!!...Mouth wide open for a few moments.  Same when I lost Bethany in the Deep Roads.

And I'm sure if I see Liara die, I'll have that same reaction.

I imagine an ending with a dead Shepard a/o Liara will br one of the options and I'll likely play it out that way, once but the Happy Ending is what I'm most looking forward to.
I believe for some a less than optimal ending will seem like a punnishment and I don't think  BW will punnish it's fans.

I'm sure she'll always remember you, and keep something with her at all times.

Speaking of which, what momentum would you get for Liara, so she'll always remember you?

i honestly think that shepard is going to live at least a half longer than the average human, just like miranda. the lazerus project threw a good amount of tech into shepard when they were rebuilding him him "such as his reinforced spine." That being said, he probably wont organically age like a regular human.

TEAM LIARA!!!

Found it to be one of the most insulting, dumb and meaningless intros ever. Bioware really managed to **** it up.

I think I'd try to get a locket with a picture. Or a bracelet for her, with a message written on the inside. Probably also do some vids, so she can watch some of the relationship years later. Anything that would help her still remember Shepard 800 years from now.

Shepard is almost entirely cybernetic. I wouldn't be surprised if he could live for hundreds of years.

It would work if the game was a MMO.  Then you can play what type of character you want.

NO.

I agree, imagine all the races killing each other because they don't like another race or character.

Pretty sure that is happening in mass effect series already ;)
I mean, just look at batarians! Makes you want to kill one on sight.

Same goes for Quarians. Their convincement that they would actually beat the geth in a war the Quarians started always makes me want to hit said Quarian to talk some sense into him (Maleshep doesn't hit women - annoying reporters excluded)

Shepard is almost entirely cybernetic. I wouldn't be surprised if he could live for hundreds of years.

Information on this is just about nonexistent. With diseases and afflictions all but exterminated, the only way people would die naturally is when their organs finally give up. With the amount of cybernetics and other stuff now in Shepard's body, it's very likely he'll live substantially longer than a normal person. A normal person can reach 150 years in age, with the codex stating this will become a lot longer very soon due to recently discovered medical improvements. Miranda says she'll live half again as long as other humans (150+75=225). I wouldn't rule it out that Shepard surpasses even Miranda in age eventually, assuming he doesn't get KIA eventually.

Not really His heart or body isn't anywhere near entirely cybernetic from what i could see. He's dead when either of those gives out.
