It's interesting to note that Liara had friends/colleagues who knew Benezia - that is something I will need to take into account. I'm kind of writing under the impression that Liara went her own way at university without Benezia's blessing.

Well Benezia was a very prominent figure in asari society so it makes sense that she was well connected in many spheres, from politics to academia. And since she was in on the secret of the asari Prothean beacon she would have probably kept close tabs on any asari research into the Protheans, obviously including Liara and her colleagues.

That seems to be a popular moment for taking screenshots... I grabbed a few there myself :)

Not sure whether to post this here or in the writers' support group, but I figure that you guys know more about Liara and asari-related things.

@ frudi and anyone else who’s read Liara’s comic

I haven’t read it (it’s not available where I live) so I just have the ME wiki summary to go on. What does Dr Passante mean when she warns Liara against falling victim to her passions much like Benezia did, which, in turn, led to her death? Was Benezia leaking Prothean info? – Perhaps that was part of her way of cooperating with the other species/making them equal with the asari?

Does Benezia’s knowledge of the beacon at Athame’s temple and her involvement with Saren mean that she has an interest in the Protheans? From the cutscene when Liara looks at an encrypted file Benezia left to her, and the fact that Benezia took her to the temple as a child; can we assume that Benezia intended Liara to find out about the asari’s cover-up with the beacon? She also bought Liara a history book, so that doesn’t seem like she was discouraging Liara’s interest in the Protheans to me.

Also, is it made clear anywhere how Benezia got involved with Saren? Other than her wanting to guide him on a gentler path, how did she become aware of his plans in the first place? We know that she gave public speeches. Did Saren go to Thessia and seek her out? I don’t think she would go after him unless she had explicitly heard rumours about him and his plans.

Sorry, I’m just thinking aloud here about a lot of random things. I guess many of the answers to my questions are open to interpretation. I just wanted to double check whether there are ‘canon’ answers before I start inventing.

And sorry if I derailed the thread with my babbling Posted Image

Back on topic: Liara is awesome! I was actually studying archaeology and classical civilisation at university before I miserably dropped out.

Looks like the Leviathian DLC fixes the glitch where Liara doesn't recognize Lotsb reunion the first time you talk to her on the Normandy.

Wait...it does?

I might need to start a new playthrough now.

Also, I haven't bothered yet, are the changes it makes to the ending somewhat significant, or should I not even bother?

Don't bother, it's not worth going through Cronos and Priority: Earth just for the one new dialogue option in the StarBrat conversation. Just do what everyone else does and check it out on youtube

Aye, I just watched that. Kind of disappointing, although I guess I shouldn't have expected much.

It also fixes the bug where if Ashley is dead, neither Garrus or Tali will have banter with each other.

Which is actually one of the best things about it, since it gives me a stronger motivation to replay.

Wait, how can it do that? I thought that was a bug with the flag not being set correctly in LotSB so you would have to change LotSB to solve it.

Ugh, I just left a very distasteful thread, talking about how Bioware finally listened to the Liara haters. Apparently, EDI is only there to help Shepard in the Leviathan DLC, because Liara would have been there instead.

Ya....that's right. It can't be that Bioware just wanted more character involvement by having James and EDI there. No no, that would be the sensible conclusion to make. No, they are there solely because Liara was going to be there instead, and they didn't want to offend the fanbase, so they changed it up.

You Fu*k kidding me!?

Either that information was incorrect, or they simply set it active for everyone with the other relevant flags.

These will all be my own interpretations, I make no claims that they are absolutely correct or canon :)

From Dr Passante's perspective, she knows nothing about indoctrination. All she knows is that Benezia initially joined Saren with the best intentions (to try and guide him away from his dangerous path) but eventually ended up seemingly willingly cooperating with him. So when Dr Passante learns that Liara is also apparently engaging in very shady activities, she worries that, like her mother, she may also eventually somehow lose her perspective and end up too far down the dark path.
Liara on the other hand does know about indoctrination, knows exactly why Benezia's thoughts and motives had become corrupted, so she assures Passante that what happened to her mother will not happen to her. But we know from ME3 that she actually has her own doubts about how far she might go and in what questionable ways she might unwittingly abuse her power (as the Shadow Broker).

Also I don't think Benezia was leaking Prothean info to other species, at least I don't remember any clue that she might be. Even beyond Benezia, I'm not aware of any hints that Prothean tech was being secretly shared or traded, not between governments at least.

Liara tells us that it was expected of her to follow in her mother's steps and become a leader or guide of her people; at least in Liara's early life, until she "rebelled" and decided to pursue a different path, she would likely have been groomed for that role. In that context Benezia likely planned for Liara to eventually become part of the select circle of asari who knew of the beacon's existence.

Of course Liara eventually chose a different path for herself, something that Benezia herself contributed to by encouraging her curiosity from a young age. When Liara was still a child Benezia probably didn't feel she needed to actively discourage her from studying the Protheans, she likely just wanted Liara to have an opportunity to engage in her interests and didn't expect she would eventually chose such an obscure field to dedicate her whole life too.

When it became clear Liara was serious about studying Protheans I think Benezia was likely strongly opposed to the idea, both because it went against her own wishes for Liara and, maybe even more importantly, because it would eventually lead to Liara discovering the secret Prothean beacon on Thessia. But at that point it was likely too late for Benezia to do anything about it, at least not without some extreme measures that would hurt Liara and alienate the two of them anyway. As much as she probably didn't want Liara to continue with her chosen career, she loved her too much to do something like that to her.
And maybe she even felt some guilt over opposing Liara's choice after previously encouraging her fascination with history and at the same time keeping the secret about a crucial piece of working Prothean tech right there on Thessia.

I don't think it's ever explained how exactly Benezia became aware of Saren's plans or how she went about approaching him (or maybe he approached her?). My best guess is the Matriarchs or Benezia specifically had some intelligence that Saren might be involved with the mysterious artefact found near Geth space and decided the issue warranted further investigation.

Central and southern Europe vacation seasons won’t fully wind down until the first week of September, generally.
