Hey Liaramancers! I was curious, what're your opinions on Mac Walters?

I think Walters needs to stick to writing characters, or atleast have another writer to keep him in check when making plots.

Did you know that pink used to be boys’ color? It was considered vibrant and boisterous, whereas blue was tranquil and calm—and therefore for girls.

Did you know boys used to be called girls? Fun fact.

That does not sound factually correct…

I knew about the color pink, that was why i said/wrote it. Though i didn't know about blue being for girls.

Anyway the saying comes from tvtropes, where to show that a man is manly, he does something unmanly, thus automatically making him more manly.:wizard:

You can read it here /tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RealMenWearPink

Which reminds me that you can go all pink warrior of death with your armor in ME.

What is hard to understand about my statement?

I do not believe that Mac Walters is incompetent, he has done good work before, but as far as I understand, some of the worst parts about ME3's plot lie at his feet. So either have him not be lead writer and simply stick to writing characters (which he has shown he can), or have someone else be there to guide him when making plots in order to avoid writing crap.

I started reading fanfiction to cope with that train-wreck of an ending and I've never looked back since.^_^

Hmm, life story incoming, sorry.
Prepare yourselves.

Thats kind of the same reason I'm here. I'd finished ME3 once (unless you count multiple reloads to check the endings), pre-EC with Ashley as LI. Felt nothing really, ending was crap and I just didn't worry about it. I even felt weird telling Ashley I loved her, because I was like, "Do I?" Then I stopped playing for a while. Then a little while ago I went back to ME1 and romanced Liara, which I'd amazingly never done before, and I fell head over heels in love. ^_^ So yeah, I wasn't really thinking about the ending while playing through ME1+2 when the EC came out and I thought, "Oh great, this will really clear things up!"
So I built up really unrealistic expectations about the epilogue, and when I finally got there, I picked my ending, watched the few extra scenes and promptly burst into tears. It was 4:30AM, I'd been playing for about 12 hours, and I was just.. wrecked.
I have a few reasons for disliking the endings, but the greatest one was the lack of closure with Liara. I missed a video game character, and although I was ashamed about it, I couldn't stop tearing up. Not very manly.
I'm very easily manipulated by slow motion montages and sad piano melodies, so the ending was like kryptonite for me, and I became a mess.
It also wrecked any desire I had to play through the series again, as it'd be like opening old wounds.
So yeah, I spent a few days trying to headcanon the absolute crap out of my ending, but then I came here, met all of you fine people and am on my way back to not being a quivering sack of misery, and I thank you all. :)
I don't think I'll be able to ever pick any ending except for High-EMS destroy, but it was my favourite anyway, so no harm done there.

Sorry for being a massive wuss, I expect a bit of flaming, but I'm anonymous on the internet and it feels good to get this off my chest. It isn't something I'm proud of, but it is how I feel unfortunately.

So yeah, thats my story. Pathetic, yes, but hey, internet anonymity right? I may as well tell the truth. B)
I could get laughed off of the forums, but I needed to let it out.
Way to set me off, CrimsonN7.

Phew. Anyway, moving on?

I know I'm a bit late in responding to this, but I just wanted to also state you are not alone in your feelings of the ending and the replaying of the series. The ending let me down for not just the lack of closure with Liara/(my femshep) and Tali/ (my maleshep), but for the feelings of loss over some of my more beloved characters. Mordin's death for instance, was one of the most emotionally charge moments I think I've ever had in my 30 years or so of gaming. I think the last time I felt that way was Aerith's death in Final Fantasy 7. However, I would like to point out that I am glad to have played this series and will continue to search for my favorite ending amongst the fanfics.

I always reduce Phoenix armor to omni gel. In fact one of the first things I do in ME1 is swap out Ashley's Phoenix Armor for the Scorpion Armor you find on Eden Prime

I like all her armours (except the red/black shadow broker one, don't like the headband) but the phantom/alliance one is without a doubt my favourite.

I really wish I could get a headcannon to work. I don't know how you guys do it.

It is strange actually untill ME3 I have always disliked the concept of headcanon, to me canon was set in stone. Then came "the ending" and headcanon become so much more fulfilling and satifying. It was actually surprisingly easier to do, and more rewarding, than I thought. Writting my heacanon is one thing that really helped making it feel more true and valid for me.

Agreed, I don't feel like my masculinity has suffered a blow for how ME has made me feel, quite the contriary.

I think Doozer summed that up rather well. Thought Han Shot First is undoubtably correct as well.

Earlier I googled that out of curiosity, because it was the first time I'd heard it. And new information is always kind of interesting, so I wanted to verify if it was correct.

"For about two hundred years after it arrived in the language in the thirteenth century girl was indeed a general term for any young person. If a writer wanted to make clear the sex of the person, he had to add a qualifier: knave girl for a boy, and gay girl for a young woman. But by the sixteenth century the word had shifted to our modern sense."

Original meaning of the word 'girl'

So it seems it was a gender neutral term for a young person, and qualifiers like knave or gay determined sex.

Amazing what history lies beneath a most common and unquestioned word and the social concept that word is connected to....

Unimpeachable source! Although I’d like to see actual sourcing…

Interesting tidbit anyway—although it doesn’t answer the question whether boys were actually called girls; just that the world girl meant ‘child’. I would assume there were other words…

It does make me wonder how frequently meanings have shifted for words in the English language.

One other example I know of is the word soldier. It was derived from the word soudeer, which in medieval France meant 'mercenary.'

If we still used the original meaning for the word Zaeed would be a soldier while Shepard would not.

I hated the original endings, but I think some of the hate directed at him and Casey Hudson by the fanbase is way over the top. People now blame them for everything that went wrong in the entire series, whether or not they had anything to do with it. A good example is not too long ago someone bashed Mac in a thread for Udina being made the canon Councilor, even if Anderson was chosen at the end of Mass Effect 1. That had actually been first made canon in a book written by Drew Karpyshyn, a writer that the fanbase generally credits (often wrongly) for everything that went right in Mass Effect.

I'm sure if you listed all the things conceived of or written by Mac Walters and Casey Hudson throughout the entire series, most fans would probably find more things on that list that they liked than disliked. Mac Walters created Garrus, Aria, and Illusive Man for example, and Hudson can be credited as the creator of Mass Effect, since he was the one who came up with the idea for the IP.

Did the endings they wrote deserve criticism? Absolutely.

Do they deserve to be bashed as hack writers who never contributed anything good to the series? Absolutely not.

Well said! I had a conversation not too long ago on this very subject and the person was shocked that I defended Casey and Mac. Did I like the ending? No. But I've also not forgotten all the other things that they got right.

Akernis ... Pre-ME3 there were alot of people who said "If its not in the game its wrong!" These were the same people that upon seeing the ending said "Scre W that!" and began creating their own ending. Seeing that if you read the books, the comics, play the game, read the tweets, so on ... canon was always a loosy goosy thing. Bioware has contradicted themselves on more than one occasion. But this is also a role play game meant for the player to participate in the creative process.

As per Sylvia ...

And did someone mention pink krogan? Mine isn't exactly pink, but he is kinda flowery :P
