The movie for me will be Hollywood's Shepard ... not Bioware's or mine. So canon won't even apply. Look at it as Hollywood's playthrough or their own fanfic.

And if it brings more people to the game then that's even better ... more players, more market, more mass effect.

As to who should be the LI for Shepard ... I'm hoping Kaidan for male Shepard so both Ash & Liara aren't subjected to being the eye candy and proof that the hero is straight ... then put in a cheesy love scene. 

I've seen the Ash thread moan that it will be Liara but for me whoever it is ... lost the coin toss not won it.

Soooooo Kaidan for the win! I'd pay to see that movie over the rest.

@PMC: I can't decide if I want to agree with you, because that's truly an awesome idea, and if Mass Effect is all about making your own canon anyways, the movie should totally go ahead and make m!Shep gay because it wouldn't affect anything for we gamers, and a gay action hero would be great. However, m!Shep/Kaidan means Ash dies on Virmire. And I love Ashley. Maybe Shepard can hold out for Steve in ME3? Best of both worlds?

Mass Effect would do better as a tv show with the highest budget EVER. There's just so much in it when it comes to character stories and everything.
IF they do make a movie I always thought it should start with the discovery of the Mass Relays and then the war with humans and turians or whatever.. it's a good introduction for people who don't know the game annnddd they wouldn't have to worry about making a cannon story.. for now

If they did base it on the games I wouldn't have Shepard romance Liara completely (maybe a little kiss in ME1) till ME3 and I would have him show some interest in Jack and Miranda but ultimately choose neither because of the stress he's always under.. it would also be crazy if they killed Jack but I see it happening if they killed Ash on Virmire it would be more interesting.. maybe have Ash and Kaidan have an interest for each other and then one dies and becomes EH about Shepard for that reason instead of just the "You're apart of Cerberus!?" which made me hate Ash (and I don't hate any other characters in the game so that says a lot) and yeah.. I would hope they didn't kill Wrex because he's the man and the story in ME3 and the Krogan isnt the same without him :3

OH and I think they should make it a CGI movie.. America should really get on that kind of stuff. Japan I think is the only one that ever really does it with stuff like Resident Evil

I doubt Shepard would romance anyone in the movie. Some Liara fans would be upset that Shepard romanced Ashley. And some Ashley fans would be upset if Shepard romanced Liara.
If Bioware has any say in what happens in the movie. It will most likely be a paragade when it comes to dialogue, but paragon only when it comes to main choices.
Although I have no idea what they plan on doing when it comes to giving the babysitting job to Ash/Kaidan.

@Batlass8 - Once the movie is released we will see people saying "See blah blah is canon because it is in the movie!" Then they will have new scenes and dialogue that might go against what is in the games and people will have aneurysms, the galaxy will shift and small children will cry dead unicorn tears.

I'm actually looking forward to the movie now! Or should I say the aftermath!

And all of this is why I think it'll never get made. Too much time spent trying to figure out a script that will please everyone, and the support and funding will dry up, and it'll be retired to the hall of things that never were.

@PMC: What are dead unicorn tears, and where can I acquire some? Also: the whole point of these games is to headcanon like crazy, because CHOICES. I honestly don't understand how a movie can be upsetting when most of us blissfully ignore what everyone else is doing anyway. Except that poor cinema is always distressing, and I do not have high hopes for *any* videogame movie.

Edit: And if I may fangirl for a minute, that's why I like your fanfic so much!  The world/Shepard/Liara you've created is nothing like anything I have, but it's so detailed and unique and interesting.  A solid ME canon would do away with something like the Questing Beast universe, and I think we as a fandom would be poorer for such limitations!

Considering Liara's role in the plot of the games, I think she is the MOST likely choice for Shepard's LI in any mass effect movie. She saves Shepard's life more than once. She always seems interested in you. Shes what got you to Ilos, found the Crucible, is the SB. It feels like Liara, in my opinion, is the second most important character in the entire series behind Shepard. So to me it would only make all the sense in the world to pair Shepard with Liara in a movie.

But thats imo, ofc:).

Although, it's one thing to have Liara, it's another thing to a good Liara. What are the chances we'd be happy with the choice of actress, the dialogue, the make-up etc. I'd say we'd probably be a hard bunch to please in that regard.
Over-sexualisation is a problem there, I reckon.

Uhhh yea sure *keeps hands awkwardly lifted over head, leaning against the counter, getting held up at gunpoint by a blue baby with a cain* .... brandy and snifters are ..behind the counter.  Dead unicorn tears...unfiltered? That puts the sparkle in suffering? Next to the absinthe.

IF they did a movie. In my opinion it should be a CGI movie. Like the Beowulf movie. That way they could use the game faces, and even the same voice actors. Like mentioned above by JDee3.

Also mentioned by JDee3, is having mass effect be a TV series. I like this idea. I think mass effect could lend itself to an episodic format. Also in CGI.
