They do, but the golden thingy spider is more famous for it. They have also been known to eat snakes.

Last pages about spiders proved to be a rather interesting read - until, that is, I saw that enormous spider Han Shot First posted. I'm not scared of spiders, but the bigger they are, the creepier they look... And that specimen is big. Would have freaked out badly in your place.

On Okinawa they're commonly called Banana Spiders. Or at least they are by English speakers, as I'm not sure what the Japanese call them. But taking a look at the link, it looks like Golden Silk Orb Weaver is the correct name for them.

That pic might be legit. The adults do get as big as a human hand.
